Jury convicts Tenn mother in newborn twins' deaths
Fox News - almost 4 years
A jury found a 26-year-old Tennessee woman guilty of murder Tuesday in the 2011 smothering deaths of newborn twins found in her laundry basket. The jury of seven men and five women convicted Lindsey Lowe, of suburban Nashville, of felony murder, premeditated murder and aggravated child abuse. She was immediately sentenced to life in prison by the judge. Lowe, who was often emotional at trial, didn't break down as the sentence was pronounced. She was dry-eyed when she turned to sobbing family members and friends in the courtroom before being taken into custody. The defendant, who toted a Bible throughout much of the seven-day trial, told them softly, "I'm OK. I love you all. He's with me," as she pointed toward the sky. At trial, jurors saw a video of Lowe telling police she had given birth alone on Sept. 12, 2011, in the bathroom of her parents' home on a quiet cul-de-sac in an upper-middle-class neighborhood. 'Lake Zurich Lost a Great Guy'
Lake Zurich Patch - almost 5 years
Long after he retired as an educator, Spencer Loomis often visited the school named after him, eager to spend time with students. "He loved coming here to the school," said Grant Seaholm, principal of Spencer Loomis Elementary. "He liked to meet the students. It was obvious that meant the most to him." Seaholm added that when Loomis walked through the school, students would rush to him, eager to shake his hand or say hello. Loomis would tell the students about his experiences in World War II and of serving as a principal in Africa. Seaholm was charged with the task of telling students Monday that Loomis had passed away. According to an obituary written by his daughter, Nancy Loomis Schroeder, the man known as Spence passed away at his home in Lake Zurich on April 21. He was 90. "He was very pleasant to have around. He's going to be missed," said Mayor Suzanne Branding. Loomis was born in Barrington on Aug. 23, 1921. He graduated from Ela Township High School in 1939 and the ...

Coyotes Beat Blackhawks In OT, Take 3-1 Lead In Series
KNCI 105.1 - almost 5 years
CHICAGO (AP)—Mikkel Boedker scored in overtime for the second straight game and the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Thursday night to take a 3-1 lead in the first-round series. Boedker skated ahead of defenseman Nick Leddy and shoveled the puck under goalie Corey Crawford at 2:15 in the fourth straight game that has gone to an extra period. Game 5 is Saturday night in Arizona. Michael Frolik’s tap-in from the left side with 1:26 left in regulation tied it and marked the third time in four games the Blackhawks rallied to force overtime after pulling Crawford for an extra attacker. Shane Doan and Taylor Pyatt scored 44 seconds apart to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead in the third. But Brendan Morrison, making his first appearance in the series, scored to make it 2-1 and send what had been a quiet United Center crowd into a frenzy. Doan stripped the puck from Chicago’s Johnny Oduya, made a nice cross-ice pass to Ray Whitney and then scored on a rebound of Whitney’ ...
