NO LONGORIA TODAY, AND OTHER LINE-UP NOTES ...
The Morning Call - Blogs - over 4 years
Rehabbing Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is sitting out today's game for Durham against the IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park. Longorial went 1-for-4 as the DH Saturday night, his first action since suffering a partial hamstring tear on April 30. Another rehabbing Ray, Jeff Keppinger, is back in the Bulls lineup as the DH after sitting out Saturday's game. He began his rehab Friday night. For the IronPigs, Dom Brown remains unavailable with a right knee sprain. John Suomi is avaiable but Tuffy Gosewisch is behind the plate for the second straight day in Erik Kratz's absence. Kratz remains with the Phillies, but with Carlos Ruiz in today's line-up in Toronto, you can expect Kratz to rejoin the IronPigs on their next road trip to Toledo and Columbus. Also, if you've been wondering where Kyle Hudson has been the last few nights, manager Ryne Sandberg said the outfielder aggravated an old heel injury in Thursday's opener with the Bulls and was told to rest it for a few days. BROWN GETS MRI; PRIDIE IN LINEUP ...
The Morning Call - Blogs - over 4 years
Dom Brown was scheduled to undergo an MRI on his right knee Friday afternoon here in Allentown. IronPigs manager Ryne Sandberg corrected himself on Friday, saying the injury that forced Brown out of Thursday's game after five innings was to his right knee, not left as reported. "He felt something coming out of the box," Sandberg said of Brown's fourth-inning groundout. He stayed in the game in the top of the fifth but had trouble going after a single to left center. "He just couldn't get after it," Sandberg said. Brown's MRI appointment at a local facility was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday. Some three hours later, Sandberg said he had not received any information on the visit. Pete Orr got the start in left Friday nighh and Kevin Frandsen moved down from his usual No. 2 spot in the order to take Brown's spot. Newcomer Jason Pridie, who was added to the IronPigs roster after signing a minor league deal with the Phillies earlier in the week, is in the lineup as the DH and h ...

Longoria guesstimate: 6-8 weeks
Tampa Bay - over 4 years
UPDATE, 2:54: Still nothing official or updated from Rays. Longoria did post this message on his Twitter account:  Looking forward to getting healthy and being back on the field ASAP. Thanks for all the support, #GoRays! Here is more from what Friedman said earlier, where he confirmed it was a "hamstring/knee" issue: "We're going to see how he's doing today. It's one of those situations where if there is improvement day over day then we probably will not DL him. If there is not improvement and we feel confident it will take 11 or 12 or more days then we probably will. But he’s a guy if he’s going to be out a week then we’ll just play short for that period of time. But it’s really premature to say anything right now until we get a feel for how he feels today when he shows up. We’re not anticipating making a move today pre-game.’’ Friedman said at around noon Longoria had not yet gone for an MRI and they weren't certain that he would: "We'll see how he feels when he comes (in) a ...

Brignac optioned to minors
Tampa Bay - over 4 years
As expected, the Rays optioned SS Reid Brignac to Triple-A after Friday's game. They needed to make room for the addition of 1B/OF Brandon Allen. Maddon said Brignac didn't take the news too well, that he's frustrated by situation. But Maddon said Brignac is respectful, and will work his way back, just needs to get regular at bats to get his offense going.

Why Brignac and Vogt are most likely to be sent down
Tampa Bay - over 4 years
Some thoughts from Gate F61 at Toronto's airport: With CF B.J. Upton coming off the DL and 1B/OF Brandon Allen claimed on waivers, the Rays have to clear two spots on the roster. The most obvious moves are to send SS Reid Brignac and OF/C Stephen Vogt to the minors. And here's why: Brignac hasn't been playing much, with Sean Rodriguez the primary SS, and hasn't hit when given the chance (2-for-17), albeit sporadic. Brignac's primary role seems to be coming in late in games to play short with Rodriguez sliding over to second as a defensive replacement for Jeff Keppinger. But the dynamic of the infield is going to change with the return of Upton, because Ben Zobrist will be back to playing second against righthanded starters, which are most of the games. And the Rays do have Elliot Johnson to take over at second when Keppinger does start against lefties, and to back up at shortstop when Rodriguez needs a day off. And why keep Johnson over Brignac? Johnson is more valuable bec ...

Rays claim OF/1B Brandon Allen
Tampa Bay - over 4 years
UPDATE, 6:24: What did the Rays see in Allen? "Big bat and a lot of pop,'' Maddon said. "I know he's had a little bit of a swing and miss problem issue historically, but he's also had big power. We've done some work on it and have some ideas in regards to how to approch this whole thing. Primarily first base, he's played some in the outfield. And I heard he's a great guy. I heard he's an "80" makeup guy, which is the highest makeup grade you can give to an athlete.'' It sounds like the Rays initially will use Allen as a pinch-hitter and DH, though he could provide Carlos Pena with a chance to get a day off, rather than in the outfield. "I don't know to what skill level he is (as an outfielder),'' Maddon said. "I'm pretty sure he's a better first baseman from what I understand than he is an outfielder, but I don't know that exactly. The big thing is I know is that his bat plays really big. His numbers last year were pretty special in Triple-A. He's carried some pretty big Triple-A num ...

Jacoby Ellsbury 'Definitely' Returning This Season, Admits He Can't Watch Replay of His Injury
NESN - over 4 years
BOSTON –– Jacoby Ellsbury has only watched the replay once. After colliding with Rays shortstop Reid Brignac in the home opener, the All-Star outfielder doesn't want a rerun of the scene. He's simply ready to persevere through his subluxed right shoulder. "We don't have a timetable," Ellsbury said. "Right now, it's icing the shoulder. Once the swelling resides, I can get into my strengthening and rehab. Everyone's on the same page. I'm excited to get everything going and get back as soon as possible." When Ellsbury suffered broken ribs in 2010, there was controversy surrounding his decision to rehab in Arizona as opposed to around the Red Sox. Since Ellsbury remains weeks away from action, he still hasn't determined the location of his rehab. Once the swelling subsides, Ellsbury intends to work on strength training. But even in hindsight, he doesn't have any regrets about the way he slid into second base or any ill will with the way Brignac reacted. "Playing the game the r ...

For starters, Rays at Jays, at night!
Tampa Bay - over 4 years
UPDATE, 6:13: Maddon said the Rays info on Romero strongly favors left-handed hitters, which is why right-handed hitting Jeff Keppinger, who was signed to play against lefty pitchers, is not in the lineup and four lefties are: Pena, Scott, Joyce and Brignac. Maddon said if he had nine lefties he would have played them all tonight (though he could have have six with Stephen Vogt and switch-hitting Elliot Johnson.) ... Ben Zobrist said his right foot was sore and bruised from Monday's hit by pitch, but wouldn't limit him on the field. He was being fitted for some protective padding. ... Brandon Gomes will be used in a variety of roles out of the bullpen Maddon said, essentially as "a utility relief pitcher.'' UPDATE, 6:08: Jays lineup: Escobar ss Johnson 2b Bautista rf Lind 1b Encarnacion dh Thames lf Lawrie 3b Rasmus cf Arencibia c Romero p UPDATE, 3:34: Longoria had a little fun with this Tweet to Romero this afternoon: Can't wait to face my boy @RickyRo24 tonight ...

Beckett’s boos turn to cheers
Nashua Telegraph - over 4 years
BOSTON – Josh Beckett’s introduction during Friday’s pre-game ceremonies inspired a fairly robust round of boos from the 37,023 fans on hand for Fenway Park’s 2012 Opening Day. When he left the premises, having shutdown the Tampa Bay Rays on one run and five hits, the rabble had climbed back onto his bandwagon. So the Red Sox began the Season of Fenway on a high note, hammering the Rays 12-2, beating Tampa Bay lefty David Price and select members of the bullpen crew who followed him. Friday’s romp also included an injury to center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who injured his right shoulder while caught in the middle of a 6-3 double play to end the fourth. Rays shortstop Reid Brignac tumbled onto Ellsbury’s shoulder. “He was in pain,” Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. Ellsbury went to Massachusetts General Hospital to be examined further, but no official word as to his condition was reported by the ballclub. Beckett, having been hammered for five homers and 10 runs one week ago Saturday ...
