Kathleen Reardon: Notes on a First Novel
Huffington Post - over 3 years
This blog is for those who have not gone to college to learn how to become writers. (Such persons don't need this blog -- and may even disagree with much of what I say here.) Many people have told me they would love to write a novel. Why then have so many of them not done so? Most people have a novel in their heads or else somewhere, partially, on paper. While that's where it starts, the key is to not let that be where it ends. Crucial to publishing fiction is persistence. Shadow Campus, my debut novel, was no overnight project. It could be found in various forms at various times in my desk until summer vacations at last provided a chance to revisit it. Nine nonfiction books had gone from my hands to publication before this first novel, but none of them had taken nearly so long. Fiction can be intimidating on the first go-round. In my case, several friends read early drafts. Their feedback helped me identify where ideas hadn't been fully developed or where a ...

Unique Chance to View Original 16th, 17th Century Dutch Masters at Ambassador’s Residence During EU Open House on May 12th
Georgetown Patch - almost 5 years
(Washington, D.C.) — The Residence of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of The Netherlands will open its doors to the public on May 12, and offer a unique opportunity to view original artwork by Dutch masters. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. visitors can enjoy still-lifes, landscapes and portraits by Jan van Goyen, Isaac Isreals and Abraham Storck -- all Dutch 16th and 17th century masters. The opening of the Residence is a part of the 2012 European Open House day. While many EU member states open the doors of their embassies this day, the Netherlands invites the public to the Residence of Ambassador Renée Jones-Bos. “I am delighted to introduce the rich legacy of great Dutch painters to a broad audience,” said Jones-Bos. The neo-classical revival style home at 2347 S Street, NW, located in the heart of Washington’s diplomatic community, was purchased by the Dutch government in 1944.  President Woodrow Wilson’s brother-in-law, Wilmar Bolling, built the Residence. On May 12, the 27 EU memb ...

Soap Dish: Renee Jones Quits Days Of Our Lives
Beleb Dirty Laundry - almost 5 years
It is Soap Dish time again my friends and this week I am dishing all about the news that Renee Jones has quit Days Of Our Lives. I have to warn you there is a couple of semi spoiler alerts below so beware of that as you continue to read.   This week Days fans learned that Lexie Carver was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Turns out in real life Renee Jones, who has played Lexie since the role was originated back in 1993, has decided to exit the show and this time for good. Not to give too much away regarding the storyline but Days has said this will be a storyline that fans can’t miss. If I had to guess I would say Lexie won’t survive the brain tumor and from what I have read it is going to be heartbreaking. I will admit I was pretty shocked when I learned that Jones was leaving the show to well, give retirement a try. Yep she isn’t going to another show or wants to try her hand in the movies or primetime, she is getting out of the business. In fact some sources are quoting that the ...

Anoka-Hennepin School Board Votes to Settle Suit by LGBT Students
Education Week - almost 5 years
From guest blogger Nirvi Shah: A group of students who sued the Anoka-Hennepin School District in Minnesota in federal court said late Monday they have settled with the district, which in exchange must provide significant new protections to prevent the harassment of students who are perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. The settlement still has to be approved by a federal judge, but if that happens, it would resolve a suit filed last summer and an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education that began in 2010, after the suicides of several students who were gay. The Southern Poverty Law Center and the National Center for Lesbian Rights filed the suits on behalf of six former and current students who said they had been bullied at school because of their real or perceived sexual orientation. The complaints said the six students named in the suits were regularly subjected to anti-gay slurs at school, with the epithets "dyke," "homo," and " ...
