Three Potential 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Season 9 Storylines
Huffington Post - 4 months
After a bitter and divisive last few months we could all use some good news right about now. As historic as November 8th was, something equally as momentous occurred on November 9th but it somehow did not receive quite as much media coverage. According to photos posted from some of the principal cast members, November 9th was the official day that Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 9 began filming. It has been 5 long years since we last saw Larry David and with each passing year it seemed less and less likely that Curb would ever return. There were rumours that one of the main reasons why Season 9 was never going to happen is that Larry did not have a story arc in mind that he liked enough to weave through and sustain an entire season. Although not necessarily involved in the plot of each individual episode, from season 3 onward, every year has had an instantly recognizable overarching storyline. From opening a restaurant in season 3 to joining the cast of the Producers in season 4 and ...

'Inside The NBA' Tried To Talk E-Sports And Everything Went To Hell
Huffington Post - about 1 year
#InsideTheNBA talks eSports. The commentary digressed quickly. (+ @Thooorin FTW) https://t.co/uLERnjDfXc — ELEAGUE (@EL) January 8, 2016 As part of Turner Broadcasting's attempt to bring e-sports to a wider television audience, the parent company staged a short crossover segment on Thursday night between TNT's "Inside the NBA" and their "broadcasting counterparts" (Ernie Johnson's respectful words) for Turner's newly formed ELEAGUE.  And to be blunt, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith were having none of it. But Shaquille O'Neal actually muttered "it's sports," when Johnson asked about the crew's opinion on e-sports. On the other side, Smith openly questioned whether e-sports could be considered a "real sport" before the segment shifted to some short ELEAGUE coverage, led by James Bardolph, Richard Lewis and Duncan “Thorin” Shields.   After their brief recap of the day's top ELEAGUE matches, Thorin couldn't help but slide in a little dig at Shaq -- who had just gi ...

5 Super Bowl Car Companies Driving Ad Spending
The Street - about 3 years
PORTLAND, Ore. (TheStreet) -- It takes millions of dollars for Fox to bring the Super Bowl into U.S. homes, but the auto industry is more than willing to give it a lift. According to Kantar Media, the Super Bowl has generated $2 billion in ad sales since 2004. Total ad spending climbed from $149.6 million a decade ago to $292 million just last year. The cost for a 30-second ad also skyrocketed from $2.15 million to $4 million during that span. The amount of Super Bowl commercial time has increased from 41 minutes and 55 seconds in 2004 to 51 minutes and 40 seconds last year, while the number of commercials aired has risen from 88 to 97 during that same period. Commercials of a minute or more made up 15% of all ad purchases last year. Automakers are driving a whole lot of that spending. Of the five companies who spent the most on Super Bowl ads in the last five years, two of them were carmakers. Of the $437 million those five companies spent during that span, $132 million was spent b ...

Work begins on new Leeds park-and-ride site
Yorkshire Evening Post - about 3 years
Work is under way on a major new park-and-ride site that transport bosses say will be just the ticket for drivers in Leeds. Yesterday (January 29) saw the official start of the construction of the 800-space facility, next to Leeds United’s Elland Road ground. And, to mark the occasion, the site was given the once-over by Coun Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s executive member for economy and development, and Coun James Lewis, chairman of West Yorkshire passenger transport authority Metro, both pictured. The park-and-ride should be ready in time for the Tour de France cycle race’s visit to Leeds in July. Buses between the site and Leeds city centre will be operated by First Group, with journeys taking about six minutes and return fares costing around £3.

It’s a Melt-up! Why are investors plowing money into Europe like never before?
Financial Post - over 3 years
The biggest European rally in 19 months is leaving virtually no stock behind, pushing up equity prices from Frankfurt to Athens as investors plow money into the region at the fastest rate since 2002. The Euro Stoxx 50 Index has climbed 21% since reaching its 2013 low on June 24, with every constituent but three advancing, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Banks, automakers and phone firms are leading gains on prospects earnings will expand as the region’s financial system heals and its longest recession ever ends. Last week, investors poured $5 billion into European equity funds, marking the biggest weekly inflow ever into the asset class. Lured by the lowest valuations compared with the rest of the world and the best returns relative to emerging economies in more than a decade, mutual fund clients have sent fresh cash to European money managers for 15 straight weeks. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi is underpinning markets with a pledge to protect the euro e ...

'Who's Smokin' The Reefer?'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
“You’ve got one minute, then I’m busy again.” These are the words legendary filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich spoke to me as I stood on the set of his new movie, “Squirrels to the Nuts.” Unfortunately, I didn’t know I’d be talking to him at all at that moment. Was I supposed to get out my recorder, or was this just introductory chit chat? Regardless, I mumbled something about “The Sopranos” and sulked away. And that would become my first experience on a movie set. To Bogdanovich’s credit, he did respond to my “Sopranos” comment. In context, I mentioned that it had been so long since Bogdanovich’s last feature-length film -– 2001’s “The Cat’s Meow” -- that there's now an entire generation who know him only as Jennifer Melfi’s therapist. “As long as they know me,” he replied. Let me back up a bit here. Most studio-sanctioned set visits involve a large number of movie writers being herded around in what at least appears to be some sort of organized and pre-planned manner. ...

More Details Hide Details Lewis has been sober since August 4, 1994. He had a frequent recurring role as a character based on himself in Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David and Lewis met at summer camp in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York when they were 13. He is #45 on Comedy Central's list of 100 Greatest Standups of All Time. Lewis claims to be the originator of the phrase "The from hell" as in "the night from hell", "the date from hell" or "the roommate from hell". This theory is expounded in the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode "The Nanny from Hell." Lewis has petitioned the editors of Bartlett's to be given credit for the coinage, but the editors claim that the phrase was a common idiom prior to Lewis's use of it. For example, during World War I, kilted Scottish soldiers were given the nickname "The Ladies from Hell" (translation of German "Die Damen aus der Hölle") by German troops. However, the Yale Book of Quotations does erroneously attribute the phrase to Lewis.
