‘Here they come, the beautiful ones...’
Hastings St Leonards Observer - almost 2 years
Britpop pioneers Suede will be performing at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill this summer. There is plenty that could be said about tricky, dark icons Suede. Instigating Britpop with their debut single The Drowners in 1992, the group subsequently disowned the genre with their ludicrously grand, tragic second album Dog Man Star in 1994. Suede propelled the twisted androgyny of their live show and newly-recruited 17 year old boy wonder Richard Oakes to the world in 1995 before retreating, galvanising and winningly unleashing the sheeny pop majesty of Coming Up in 1996. The hits continued throughout 1997, with the electronic-influenced Head Music coming out in 1998. But the band descended into illness and addiction in 1999, and the end of the nineties appeared to signal the end of Suede. But in 2010 they returned to settle unfinished business by triumphantly peacocking all across the Royal Albert Hall before taking their completely rejuvenated live show across the planet’s festiv ...

Kayley Kravitz: From Despair to Where? Richey Edwards' Disappearance 18 Years On
Huffington Post - about 4 years
On the morning of February 1, 1995, James Dean Bradfield of the Manic Street Preachers entered the lobby of the Embassy Hotel in London expecting to meet his band mate Richey Edwards (sometimes known by his stage name Richey James). The two were set to embark on a U.S. promotional tour for their latest album, the Holy Bible. Bradfield learned that Edwards had checked out of the hotel early in the morning then took off to Wales never to be seen again. February 1, 2013 marks the 18th anniversary of Richey Edwards' disappearance. The Manic Street Preachers got their start in 1986 in Blackwood, South Wales. They rose to success in 1992 with the release of their debut album Generation Terrorists. The band's sound was a combination of glam rock, metal and punk with highly intelligent lyrics referencing social issues like consumerism and the AIDS crisis. Edwards was officially the Manics' rhythm guitarist, but his contributions laid far heavier in the band's lyrics. He held a ...

Did You Know Native Americans Occupied Alcatraz In The 1960s?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Early last month, the National Park Service did something unusual: It painted graffiti onto one of its buildings. However, this is no ordinary graffiti. "Peace and Freedom. Welcome. Home of the Free Indian Land," the hand-painted slogan on the Alcatraz water tower reads. The scrawl dates back to the nearly two-year occupation of the famous island prison by Native American activists at the tail end of the 1960s. "The Indian occupation was a pinnacle moment for the Native American population and one of the most significant moments in the history of Alcatraz," said Golden Gate National Recreation Area spokesperson Alexandra Picavet. "The graffiti on the water tower is one of the most visible remnants of that time." Before the graffiti was painted over earlier this year as part of a restoration of the island's water tower, park officials meticulously documented it so they could recreate it perfectly on top of a fresh coat of paint. "The painting on the water tower ...

Kayley Kravitz: Where Do I Start With Suede?
Huffington Post - over 4 years
When people think of '90s Britpop, four bands usually spring to mind: Oasis, Blur, Pulp and Suede. Oasis and Blur made it into the U.S. pop charts with hits like "Wonderwall" and "Song 2." Pulp had a sizable fan base in college radio crowds. Recently, they received the adoration of hipsters everywhere by being prominently featured at this year's Coachella festival and cruise. But what of my beloved Suede? Whether they wanted to or not, Suede found themselves championing the Britpop movement. In 1992, Brett Anderson appeared on the cover of Select magazine emblazoned before the Union Jack with a headline reading "Yanks Go Home!" As the Britpop scene grew, Suede tried to distance themselves. Suede has always had a turbulent relationship with the U.S. In 1994, a lounge singer from Maryland sued the band over the use of the name "Suede." Thus, Suede was then to be known as "the London Suede" in America. They were not happy about this decision. In 1997, the band's gear was st ...

Orange County Sheriff Deputies have come under fire the past couple of months, but two weeks ago local deputies prevented an almost certain fatality in Rancho Santa Margarita. With lights and sirens blazing, deputies Maria Bowman and Richard Oates responded to a report of a man standing on the railing of the Santa Margarita Parkway Bridge on March 30. Bowman and Oates arrived at 11:25 p.m., two minutes after the call went out, and made contact with a 22-year-old man. The young adult said he was depressed over family matters and was thinking of jumping off the bridge. Sign up to receive the daily Patch newsletter, or follow RSM Patch on Facebook and Twitter.
