Colts quarterback Matt Hasselbeck returns to practice on limited basis
Houston Chronicle - about 1 year
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Hasselbeck returned to practice on a limited basis. Hasselbeck has back and rib injuries, but is expected to start Sunday against the Texans. Hasselbeck, 40, won a start against the Texans at NRG Stadium in October. “Yeah, I thought he got good work out there,” Colts offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski said. “We’ll continue to see how he does. Add in that he’s 40 years old, and it takes a little bit longer to recover from some of those things. I think he’s done a great job of getting himself ready to play. “He’s done it for so long, he knows how to get himself ready to play. He’s had his ups and downs, as we’ve all had, but I’m certainly glad we have him and glad he’s a part of the team. He’s done a lot for us.” Hasselbeck told Indianapolis reporters Thursday he feels much better. “Pretty good, I got to practice a little bit, so that’s good,” Hasselbeck said. “It’s not so much, not an incredible amount of pain. I’m taking some things fo ...

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck out 2-6 weeks with lacerated kidney
Houston Chronicle - over 1 year
The Indianapolis Colts have suffered a major blow to their offense with the loss of starting quarterback Andrew Luck for the next two to six weeks with a lacerated kidney and a partially torn abdominal muscle. The Colts announced Tuesday that the Houston native will be sidelined, but they don’t believe the injury will require surgery. Matt Hasselbeck, who defeated the Texans earlier this season when Luck had a shoulder injury, will start in his place. Luck got hurt during a victory over the previously unbeaten Denver Broncos on Sunday, a win that provided the 4-6 Colts with a half-game lead over the 3-5 Texans. The Texans travel to play the Colts on Dec. 20 at Lucas Oil Stadium, and it’s now undetermined whether Luck will be playing in that game. “The injuries happened at the end of an early fourth quarter scramble when Andrew was doing everything he could to get us the win,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said in a statement. “Andrew was sore after the game and was feeling a little w ...

Mike Pettine Named Browns' New Head Coach
Huffington Post Sports - about 3 years
CLEVELAND (AP) — After nearly a month of twists, turns and talk, the Browns found their man. Mike Pettine is Cleveland's new coach. Buffalo's defensive coordinator, who met with team officials for the first time just a week ago, finalized a five-year contract Thursday to become the Browns' seventh full-time coach since 1999. The team fired Rob Chudzinski on Dec. 29 following one season and embarked on a winding search that ended with Pettine. "We wanted to be thorough from the start," CEO Joe Banner said, "and we interviewed as many people as we could. From that group, we hired the best individual for this job. Our players and fans are going to really enjoy Mike Pettine and his leadership style." The 47-year-old Pettine, the son of a legendary Pennsylvania high school coach, spent one year with the Bills after four as Rex Ryan's defensive coordinator with the New York Jets. With his clean-shaven head and no-nonsense approach, Pettine, who also was an assistant coach with Balt ...

Browns Beat Ravens 24-18: Jason Campbell Helps Cleveland End Long Losing Streak vs. Baltimore
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns punched the AFC North's biggest bully in the mouth. The defending Super Bowl champion Ravens are wobbling. Jason Campbell threw three touchdown passes — two to Davone Bess — and the Browns ended an 11-game losing streak against Baltimore, beating the Ravens 24-18 on Sunday. Campbell's 3-yard pass to Bess on fourth down with three minutes left helped the Browns (4-5) seal their first win over Baltimore since 2007. A week ago, Bess dropped a pass in a similar situation in the closing minutes of a loss at Kansas City. The Ravens (3-5) lost their third straight and didn't win in the week following a bye for the first time in six tries under coach John Harbaugh. Baltimore's Joe Flacco had a pair of TD passes to rookie Marlon Brown, but the Super Bowl MVP couldn't rally the Ravens, who made too many mistakes and are in danger of missing the playoffs. Making his second straight start after Brandon Weeden was benched, Campbell completed 23 of 35 passes f ...

Mike Holmgren Rips Trent Richardson Trade: Browns CEO Joe Banner Responds To Criticism
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
Former Cleveland Browns President Mike Holmgren said that if he were in head coach Rob Chudzinski's shoes, he would have quit after the team traded running back Trent Richardson. "Philosophically, if I am the coach and someone came in anywhere and did that, I'd say 'OK, fire me, or I'm going to quit. Or we're going to both go into the owner and talk about this and the we'll see who's still standing,'" Holmgren said on Sports Radio 950 KJR in Seattle, via Cleveland.com. Richardson, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, was dealt to the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday in exchange for a future first-round pick. Holmgren, who was let go by new Browns owner Jimmy Haslam III and replaced by new CEO Joe Banner, wondered aloud how the trade made the team better and called the deal "a little bit of a knee-jerk reaction." Banner responded to Holmgren's criticism on ESPN Radio’s "Mike and Mike" show on Friday. "Well you know Mike is entitled to his opinion. He ran the team for thr ...

Trent Richardson Traded To Colts From Browns For First-Round Draft Pick
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
BEREA, Ohio — Not long ago, Trent Richardson was viewed as a cornerstone for Cleveland's future. On Wednesday, he became part of its recent inglorious past. The Browns traded the powerful running back to Indianapolis in a stunning move just two games into the season and one year after drafting Richardson in the first round. The team's new front office dealt Richardson for a first-round draft pick next year, when the team will have two opening-round selections and 10 overall. Cleveland is rebuilding again and the team hopes to use those picks – seven in the first four rounds – to help turn around a floundering franchise. Such a reversal was what the Browns had in mind when they took Richardson with the No. 3 overall pick in 2012. The former Alabama standout seemed to have it all: power, speed and good hands. But Richardson wasn't the kind of back Cleveland's front office wants or apparently suited first-year coach Rob Chudzinski's offense. Richardson, who rushed for 950 yards as ...
