Nutrition Panel Tells All: Fueling the Future
Huffington Post - about 1 year
According to an article on the Stanford Social Innovation Review, "No single organization has the ability to solve any major social problem at scale by itself. Collective impact is a powerful new approach to cross-sector collaboration that is achieving measurable effects on major social issues." New York City is exemplifying this idea of collective impact achieved through cross-sector collaboration to reverse the childhood obesity crisis in its own backyard. The Centers for Disease and Prevention reports that in 2012, more than one-third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Millions of households struggle to put enough food on the table, and also lack the proper knowledge and skills to choose and prepare nutritious options. In NYC - a diverse city with a population of more than eight million people - the approach needs to be comprehensive, inclusive, and focused. The NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene is leading the charge by focusing in on the driver ...

10 Home Remedies for Allergies
Time - Healthland - almost 2 years
Spring brings warmer weather and longer days, while the autumn ushers in crisp air and pumpkin-spice lattes. But these seasonal changes aren’t welcomed by everyone. For many of us, they’re eclipsed by the itchy eyes, sneezing, and congestion of hay fever and other allergies. What to do? Some allergies are severe and require the attention of a doctor or other health care professional. For milder cases, though, home remedies may provide all the relief you need, with relatively little expense or hassle. Even people with bad allergies who need medication may find these at-home tips helpful for easing symptoms. Neti pots They may look exotic, but Neti pots are fast becoming a mainstream remedy for allergies and stuffed-up sinuses. The treatment, which involves rinsing your nasal cavity with a saline solution, flushes out allergens (like pollen) and loosens mucus. Using a Neti pot is simple. First, fill the pot with a mixture of salt and warm water (you can buy pre-measured kits or m ...

Lenovo To Stop Pre-Installing Controversial Software
Huffington Post - about 2 years
By Paul Carsten BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Lenovo Group Ltd, the world's largest PC maker, said on Thursday it will no longer pre-install software that cybersecurity experts said was malicious and made devices vulnerable to hacking. Lenovo had come under fire from security researchers who said earlier on Thursday the company pre-installed a virus-like software from a company called Superfish on consumer laptops that hijacked web connections and allowed them to be spied upon. Users reported as early as last June that a program, also called Superfish, was 'adware', or software that automatically displays adverts. Superfish will no longer be pre-installed and has been disabled on all products in the market since January, when Lenovo also stopped pre-installing the software, said a Lenovo spokesman in an email to Reuters on Thursday. Superfish was included on some consumer notebooks shipped between September and December, he said. "We have thoroughly investigated this techno ...

Lenovo Turns Off Superfish PC Adware Following Customer Complaints
Wall Street Journal - about 2 years
By Nathan Olivarez-Giles Lenovo has disabled and discontinued loading laptops with an ad-serving software called Superfish that, according to security researchers, makes it easy for attackers to access encrypted Web data, and even online passwords. The company said in a statement on Thursday that it stopped shipping computers with the Superfish adware in January—a practice it had begun in September—and that it will not preload this software again in the future. Lenovo also said that Superfish had been disabled on systems that already had it installed. Read more:  Lenovo CTO: We’re Working to Wipe Superfish App Off of PCs Claims as to the danger that the Superfish software poses vary widely. Lenovo said it doesn’t see Superfish as a threat: “We have thoroughly investigated this technology and do not find any evidence to substantiate security concerns,” reads the statement. The Chinese computer maker says it stopped shipping the software on its PCs simply because “user feedback was not pos ...

LOOK: Arizona Candidate's Dark Skinned Photo Sparks Controversy
Huffington Post - over 3 years
It may be over a year before the 2014 Arizona gubernatorial election but things are already getting “interesting” between parties. Last Thursday, in response to being named “the most uninteresting man in the world” by the Arizona Republican Party, Democrat gubernatorial nominee Fred DuVal released a photo of himself with darkened skin and an attire emulating Dos Equis' Latino character dubbed “The Most Interesting Man in the World,” the Arizona Daily Independent reports. Media outlets have described the doctored image as DuVal’s attempt to look “more Hispanic” while critics have labeled the jest a “racially motivated minstrel show.” In a July 26 press release titled “Democrat Candidate Nominated ‘Most Uninteresting Man in the World,’” the Arizona Republican Party denounced the state’s Democratic party for being unable to “find candidates that people can relate to.” DuVal responded almost a week later with another press release announcing he had delivered a case ...

Arianna Huffington: 10 Years Later: Looking Back on the Iraq War So We Can Clearly Look Forward
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting." It's one of Milan Kundera's most famous lines, from his novel The Book of Laughter and Forgetting. It's one worth keeping in mind as we approach March 20, the 10th anniversary of one of the biggest disasters in the history of the United States. That was the day George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and a team of others -- along with much of Washington and a very complicit mainstream media -- took the nation to war against Iraq. The devastating consequences of that war will continue for decades, but a full accounting has still yet to happen. And that in itself has consequences. Allowing the toxic mixture of lies, deception and rationalizations that led to that war to go unchallenged makes it more likely that we will make similar tragic mistakes in the future. So I hope we can use this moment to assess what really happened, to look back in order to look forward. At HuffPost, we'll be doing what we can i ...

Ga. legislators face starvation on $100-a-meal limit
ajc - over 4 years
Most Georgia voters are appalled by the realization that under state law, there is literally no limit on the value of gifts that a lobbyist can bestow upon a state legislator. And while many of those voters would prefer a limit of zero, as many other states have, they would accept a $100 gift limit as a compromise. Unfortunately, a lot of state legislators don’t see a $100 limit as a compromise. They see the very concept of a limit as an undeserved, media-driven attack on their God-given prerogative to be wined, dined and entertained lavishly at lobbyists’ expense. In fact, it’s revealing to see them fight so hard to cling to gifts that they simultaneously claim to not really want much in the first place. Their behavior negates their rhetoric. In the interest of good government, however, I’d like to try to ease fears under the Gold Dome by taking a few moments to explore what life under a $100 gift limit might look like. Let’s imagine that you’re a legislator and it’s the openin ...

Drum Beat: Wet weather fails to stop bands marching
News Letter - almost 5 years
LAST weekend saw periods of torrential rain right across the Province, however even the most extreme weather conditions don’t stop band processions, as was clearly illustrated with events going ahead in counties Down, Antrim and Tyrone. On Friday night the Loyal Sons of Benagh Flute were the hosts in Newry city, with an impressive 39 bands on parade to support the south Down band. As has been the pattern with the band to date, standards in musicianship, style and appearance, marching and discipline were all noticeably higher than ever before. Donaghmore Accordion impressed with a small but committed band, with the young and primarily female flute corps of Allistragh Flute Armagh also standing out for many. Downshire Guiding Star Banbridge has started the year strongly, with Armagh True Blues Flute putting in a very powerful blood and thunder performance. The colour party of Blackskull Orange and Blue Flute continued its run as one of the finest in the entire movement, chalking u ...
