Full-Frontal News: The Virus Among Us
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Watching a local newscast this morning, I was horrified when I saw two more TV newsreaders had become infected with a virus that transforms them into sub-human, brainless prompter puppets I call "Setwalkers" - zombie-like news creatures who move from monitor location to monitor location around the studio for no apparent reason other than to "mix things up." Where this virus first started - ground zero, can't be pinpointed, but I'll bet it began festering unnoticed in some small-market station before the infection spread via the airwaves from one newsreader to another. Slowly, newsreaders around the country have been turned into setwalkers simply because their competitors are doing it. The symptoms are easy to recognize. A newsreader leaves the main news desk (home base) during a voiceover or package and suddenly appears standing like Carol Merrill from The Price Is Right, draped around a monitor in another area of the set. "Let's see the next news story we have up for grabs, Bob! ...

HLN Network Boss Out After 2 Years
Huffington Post - about 1 year
NEW YORK (AP) — Albie Hecht has quit as chief executive of the HLN network, leaving the CNN offshoot in search of a new boss. Hecht, a former executive at Spike and Nickelodeon, joined the former Headline News two years ago to guide the network in the direction of being a social media hub. That hasn't really worked, and CNN U.S. President Jeff Zucker said in a memo to staff Tuesday that he wants more of the non-fiction programming being created for CNN to appear on HLN during daytime and overnight hours. "In light of that, Albie Hecht has decided it makes sense for him to move on," Zucker wrote. Veteran CNN executive Ken Jautz will be the interim chief at HLN. No changes appear planned for the network's most recognizable on-air personalities, Robin Meade, Nancy Grace and Drew Pinsky. Bad news is everywhere, but that doesn't mean you can't have a little fun in the newsroom. "Morning Express" anchor Robin Meade and HLN colleagues Jennifer Westhoven and Bob Van Dillen got down to "Uptown Funk" in a video posted Monday on Facebook. Yes, they're on a table. And Westhoven confirms they were having a ball. We can't dance, but our own morning halftime show was awesome! http://t.co/88pVEDnjj8 @RobinMeade @BobVanDillen @MorningExp — Jennifer Westhoven (@JenWesthoven) February 2, 2015 Meade has shown off her moves before. HLN Cancels Multiple Shows In Sweeping Overhaul
Huffington Post - over 3 years
HLN has canceled several daytime shows in a major overhaul of the network. Last week Mediaite reported that CNN's sister network HLN would soon face major layoffs and show cancellations in order to evolve the network. An internal memo sent by SpikeTV founder Albie Hecht now reveals exactly which shows will be returning, and which are gone for good. "Raising America," hosted by Kyra Phillips, will not be returning. The noon slot will be taken up by a rerun of "ShowBiz Tonight" from the day before. Lynn Berry and Ryan Smith's "Evening Express" has also been canceled. Smith will remain as co-host of "After Dark" while the hidden camera program "What Would You Do" will now air in its place. The third show cancellation is "Now in America," which has been removed to make room for "News Now's" new hour. The daytime show "News Now," currently running from 1-4 p.m. ET, will now run through 5 p.m. "Now in America" host Vinnie Politan will also remain alongside Ryan Smith as co-host of ...
