Gessler’s proposed changes to election rules draw heated objections
The Colorado Independent - over 4 years
Over the course of a five-hour rulemaking hearing Monday, Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler probably got the message that a lot of people are unhappy with proposed rules that would stop county clerks from mailing ballots to inactive voters in some elections, change the way canvass boards are selected and give county clerks more power to determine how much access election watchers have. About 40 people signed up to testify at this week’s hearing; nearly all of them spoke in opposition to one or more of Gessler’s proposed rule changes, which covered three general areas. Secretary of State Scott Gessler, left, and Director of Elections Judd Choate listen to testimony Monday. (Kersgaard) “It was pretty much all opposition,” commented Luis Toro, executive director of Colorado Ethics Watch, who did not speak.  “I don’t think it (the opposition) will change anything, though,” he said. The rules, (pdf) either as presented by Gessler or as revised by his office as a result of ...

TORONTO — Whether it is getting off a bus or reading a menu, a new app aims to make life easier for the blind or visually impaired. Called Georgie, the app for Android devices enables people with little or no sight to accomplish daily activities that could be difficult for them. The great thing that attracted me to (creating the app) was this notion of gaining confidence “The great thing that attracted me to (creating the app) was this notion of gaining confidence, and also having reassurance that you could press a button and get help if you were lost,” said Roger Wilson-Hinds, co-founder of Screenreader, a nonprofit based in Peterborough, England, that developed the app. Users navigate the app’s features by passing their fingers over various options which are read aloud. Lingering on a particular option produces a beep, indicating that the option has been selected. The app can make calls or send texts but it also provides location-based technologies, which can let users know ...

Former Missouri Gov. Roger Wilson gets 2 years' probation for illegal campaign contribution
Fox News - over 4 years
Roger Wilson, a Missouri Democrat who was elevated to the governor's job after the plane crash that killed Gov. Mel Carnahan, was sentenced Monday to two years of probation for misusing money to make political donations. Wilson, 63, pleaded guilty in April to one count of misdemeanor campaign finance fraud, the same day his federal indictment was announced. He admitted that he improperly steered $8,000 to the state Democratic Party in 2009 while serving as CEO of Missouri Employers Mutual Insurance Co., a state-created workers' compensation firm. Wilson could have received up to six months in prison under federal sentencing guidelines. He also was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and $5,000 in restitution. He must complete 100 hours of community service. Chief Magistrate Judge Mary Ann Medler cited Wilson's otherwise exemplary record in nearly a quarter-century of public service in opting not to require jail time. Wilson apolo ...

Northampton Saints: Timeline to Saints’ woe
Northampton Chronicle & Echo - almost 5 years
WILL it be third time lucky for Saints in the Premiership play-off semi-finals or will they fall before the grand final hurdle once again? They’re seen as underdogs against regular-season table-toppers Harlequins but there is a real sense here that Jim Mallinder’s men can conquer The Stoop to book a May 26 trip to the big venue across the road... 1.45pm: The big breaking news ahead of the game is that Chris Ashton will not play for Saints, meaning the ‘Ash Splash’ seen against Worcester could be his final act in a Northampton shirt... At least he will have gone out in trademark style if that is to be the case. Ashton’s absence means it’s a big day for Russian Vasily Artemyev, who comes in from the cold to start on the wing. 1.58pm: In other news, we have been placed right next to Saints bosses Mallinder and Dorian West in The Stoop press box. Should make for interesting watching/listening over the next couple of hours... 2.05pm: Quins boss Conor O’Shea has given Saints plenty of r ...

Ohio to resume jail inspections every other year
Chronicle Online - almost 5 years
COLUMBUS — Ohio prisons officials haven't completed annual inspections of local jails since 2008 but plan to resume the checks soon on a biennial basis. The Columbus Dispatch reports the corrections department stopped doing the inspections after the number of inspectors dropped from four to one because of budget cuts. Administrator Roger Wilson says the state checks jails in response to complaints but has focused instead on creating better standards for jails, which processes hundreds of thousands of people annually. Critics say the lack of inspections at the 349 county and city jails in Ohio could jeopardize inmates’ health and safety. In Franklin County, the sheriff has promised discipline against dozens of deputies following an investigation into filthy conditions in a jail cell where an inmate died of a heart attack.

Exeter Chiefs 15 - 18 Northampton Saints: Saints’ Premiership title hopes back on track after victory at Exeter
Northampton Chronicle & Echo - almost 5 years
SAINTS came back to beat Exeter at a rain-lashed Sandy Park to keep their Premiership title hopes on track. The visitors were down 10-3 after a storming start from Exeter but second half tries from Chris Ashton and Paul Diggin saw them win 18-15 to move back above the Chiefs and into fourth with one home game against Worcester left. Saints took the lead with a Stephen Myler penalty, but Exeter, who face Saracens away in their final game, went into overdrive when Haydn Thomas tapped a penalty. And when he did it again in kickable range the scrum-half caught Saints out. He offloaded to Argentine Gonzalo Camacho who powered up to the line. He was stopped but the TMO ruled it was not a double movement and the winger got up to dive over. It all came from Lee Dickson being caught offside after Myler’s up-and-under went about two metres. Exeter played with a verve that Saints couldn’t match in the early stages and it took a fabulous tackle from Roger Wilson to stop Ignacio Mieres to scor ...

Martin files ethics complaint over illegal MEM contribution
PoliticMO - almost 5 years
Ed Martin — Republican activist Ed Martin has joined the fray surrounding a set of two illegal political donations made to the Missouri Democratic Party in 2009. Martin, currently the leading Republican candidate for Missouri attorney general, filed an ethics complaint against the Missouri Democratic Party and Gov. Jay Nixon accusing them of having direct knowledge about the Missouri Employers Mutual campaign finance scandal. Martin accused the party and Nixon of trying to hide the “true source” of a political contribution. He pointed to guilty pleas last week from former Gov. Roger Wilson and St. Louis attorney Edward Griesedieck, who admitted to funneling $8,000 in funds from MEM through Griesedieck’s law firm to the state Democratic party. “Questions remain especially if and when someone whether from Missouri Democratic Party, Governor Nixon himself, a Nixon staffer, or another at-this-time unknown person or persons solicited the contributions and whether they assisted in ...

Former MO Gov Pleads Guilty
Chesterfield Patch - almost 5 years
Missouri's laundry business I was gone from St. Louis for 26 years. When I returned in 2006 I found the State of Missouri provided workman comp casualty insurance for smaller businesses. Apparently, in 1993 the state legislature created the Missouri Employer’s Mutual Insurance Company, to help small businesses pay lower rates than being charged by insurance companies—state government competing against private business! The governor appoints the board of directors. That would make it a public agency…right? Wrong… according to Missouri Employer’s Mutual when reporters tried to look at finance records. In 1993, the nation was coming out of a weak recession which caused insurance rates to go up for riskier small businesses, so the state stepped in. But this was 2006. Why would Missouri kept running an insurance company after the economy improved? Well, part of that question was answered Thursday, when Roger Wilson—former governor and CEO of Missouri Employer’s Mutual, pleade ...
