There Are No Words To Describe How Good Viola Davis Looked Last Night
Huffington Post - 5 days
We’d love to tell you all about how absolutely stunning our national treasure Viola Davis looked at the 8th Annual Oscars Sistahs Soiree in Beverly Hills Wednesday night. Unfortunately, we can’t. Because there are no words that could do her and her dress justice. We could say the perfectly form-fitting, plunging black dress looked great on her figure, and that still wouldn’t sum it up. We could explain how the edgy cut-outs are a welcome departure from Davis’ typically classic style, and bask in how good she looks from every angle. Yet, that still wouldn’t be enough to express our many feelings. We might even try to capture through written word how beautiful some of the other attendees ― including Octavia Spencer, Ruth Negga, Rosario Dawson and Tracee Ellis Ross ― looked in fringe, bold patterns and sheer outfits.   Unfortunately, we’re too busy trying to emulate their magic to do it. So, in lieu of all that, here are a few more photos to swoon over. You’re ...

Best new artist: Some celebrities wrote their first checks to candidates in 2016
Huffington Post - about 2 months
Alec Baldwin (right) won a Golden Globe in 2007 for his work on "30 Rock" and posed with Donald Trump, actress Tina Fey and Melania Trump. Nine years later Baldwin played Trump on Saturday Night Live -- but he contributed to no presidential candidates. (AP Photo/Matt Sayles) BY: Andrew Mayersohn The Hollywood liberal has been a stock figure in American politics for decades. Conservative politicians have long denounced or mocked the alleged political influence of musicians, TV stars, and Golden Globe recipients. While the entertainment industry does indeed lean well to the left, though, most of that money comes from producers and media magnates, not the people you see on screen. The only household names in the entertainment industry to make our list of top 100 donors in 2016 were Jeffrey Katzenberg of Dreamworks and the conservative McMahons of the WWE (and, now, the Small Business Administration). In terms of the "talent," though, the same handful of politically aware celeb ...

'Luke Cage' Is 'Kick Ass, Wu-Tang Blackness With A Marvel Twist'
Huffington Post - 5 months
Marvel’s latest Netflix series, “Luke Cage,” can only be described as “unadulterated, bulletproof, kick ass, Wu-Tang blackness, with a Marvel twist,” says the show’s creator Cheo Hodari Coker.  Adapted from the 1970s Marvel comic book character of the same name, the Netflix action-drama series ― which stars Mike Colter, Mahershala Ali, Simone Missick, Rosario Dawson and Alfre Woodard ― is set in Harlem, New York. It tells the story of a wrongly convicted man, Luke Cage (played by Colter), who escapes prison after gaining super strength through an experiment before becoming a hero for hire. Similar to other revised Marvel adapted television shows, “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones,” Coker ― who is known for his work on “Notorious,” “Ray Donovan,” and “Southland”― said it was imperative for him to take a modern-day approach to the story by incorporating current social themes, while maintaining entertaining elements from the original comic.    ”We were able to do a hip-hop, Blaxpl ...

Join The "Like" Challenge and Save the English Language
Huffington Post - 6 months
What's Not To "Like"? - Perverting The Mother Tongue Most educated, English-speaking people cringe at the increasing misuse of the word "like" and "I feel like" which seem to have inhabited our daily discourse. This is less a problem for non-native English speakers when they speak English and rather seems to have spread in pandemic form through our 24/7 pop culture media immersion and then is carried into our homes, schools, shopping malls, concert venues, at the beach and in other places where people gather en masse. Operation USA (www.opusa.org), a 37 year old international disaster relief agency and co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize (as part of the Int'l Campaign Against Landmines), has increasingly become involved in rebuilding schools and libraries in post disaster or endemic poverty environments. Our motto is "give and it gets there". In the spirit of raising funds for these programs, Operation USA offers the following challenge to our cultural, thought and po ...

Colombian Poet Has The Perfect Clapback For People Who Say He Doesn't Look Latino
Huffington Post - 9 months
Carlos Andrés Gómez has light-skin and green eyes. And yes, he is Latino. "After the show she asked me: 'Carlos Andrés Gómez is your stage name, right? I mean I’ve never met a Hispanic who looks like you, so, uh, what’s your real name?'” The Colombian author and HBO Def Poet shared this anecdote in his poem "Juan Valdez," which has amassed more than 700,000 views since MiTu posted it on Facebook on May 13. Gómez told The Huffington Post the question regarding his name is "verbatim" what a woman asked him a few years ago after a performance in Indiana.  "I didn't have a clever or poignant response in the moment," he said. "I was honestly so shocked by how ignorant the questions were I was dumbstruck - this [poem] is what I wished I had said to her."  Actress Rosario Dawson and hundreds of others have shared the poem since it was posted. In it, Gómez asks "What exactly does a 'Hispanic' look like?" before going through a line-by-line breakdown of stereotypes abo ...
