Scott Mendelson: Review: Hitchcock Thinks You Can't Handle the Truth
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Hitchcock 2012 95 minutes rated PG-13 by Scott Mendelson It is telling that the opening frames of Sacha Gervasi's Hitchcock don't even give us the usual 'based on a true story' text as its allegedly non-fiction story begins.  It's the only honest moment of the entire picture, which is so gloriously full of shit that it can't bear to even pretend that the story it's presenting is remotely truthful.  Technically based on Stephen Rebello's 1990 book, Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, the film alters history, dilutes the contributions of talented individuals, commits outright libel against others, while basically ignoring its central subject (the, um, making of Psycho) in favor of a contrived would-be romantic conflict between Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) and Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).  Worse yet, the story is told in broad, on-the-nose strokes that resembles the kind of writing found in bad childrens' cartoons and the picture revolves ...

What's The First Word On 'Hitchcock'?
Huffington Post - over 4 years
-- The man who made "Psycho" was no lightweight, though he kind of comes off that way in "Hitchcock." Starring Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock and Helen Mirren as his wife and collaborator, Alma, "Hitchcock" puts a featherlight yet entertaining touch on the behind-the-scenes struggle to make the mother of all slasher films. Hitchcock's very dark side gets superficial treatment as the film offers the cinematic equivalent of psychobabble to explore the director's notorious gluttony, sexual repression and idolization of his leading ladies. Though shallow, "Hitchcock" has a playful quality that often makes it good fun, its spirit of whimsy a wink that the filmmakers know they're riffing on Hitchcock's merrily macabre persona and not examining the man with any great depth or insight. "Hitchcock" is a promising move into dramatic filmmaking for director Sacha Gervasi after his 2009 documentary "Anvil: The Story of Anvil," a chronicle of heavy-metal wannabes w ...

See Stunning New Pictures of Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel in Hitchcock
US Magazine - over 4 years
Sixteen days before the release of Hitchcock, Fox Searchlight has released new stills from the film about legendary director Alfred Hitchcock's life and marriage at the time he was making his 1960 horror classic Psycho. PHOTOS: Scarlett Johansson's romantic history Scarlett Johansson, 27, and Jessica Biel, 30, play the parts of that film's leading ladies, Janet Leigh and Vera Miles, respectively. In a recent interview with V magazine, Johansson opened up about recreating Psycho's iconic shower scene. "We only had the luxury to shoot the scene for a day, and everybody was feeling very nervous because it involved water and nobody wants the actor to get wet," she recalled. "They were concerned with modesty and all these things -- but I don't care about any of that stuff and Janet Leigh never did either." Hitchcock's Newest Poster Features The Rest Of The Cast Going Psycho
Perez Hilton - over 4 years
Ah! We knew it would come. The team behind Hitchcock has released more marketing material which showcases all of the film's major characters, not just the titular director played by Anthony Hopkins. The newest poster (above) features Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, Helen Mirren as Alma Reville, James D'Arcy as Psycho star Anthony Perkins, Danny Huston as Whitfield Cook and Toni Collette playing the iconic director's personal assistant. While we thought it was going to be a simple biopic about all of the dramz that went down behind the scenes during the making of Psycho, it turns out it's actually a love story. Director Sacha Gervasi revealed the core of the story is Hitchcock's relationship with his wife and explained: “I think Alma accepts Hitch for exactly who he is and knows his idiosyncrasies and his crazy predilections. She allows him to have his obsessions and I think our movie is about a point where they sort of escalate. Their marriage ...

First Look At 'Hitchcock'
Popeater - over 4 years
Fox Searchlight surprised many Oscar watchers when it announced that Sacha Gervasi's "Hitchcock" would debut right in the middle of awards season. Out Nov. 23, the film -- which chronicles director Alfred Hitchcock relationship with his wife, Alma Reville, during the production of "Psycho" -- is still cloaked in mystery: It's one of the few Oscar contenders without a trailer or fancy festival premiere date. In an effort to kickstart the campaign, however, Fox Searchlight has released some new stills from the film, showcasing Anthony Hopkins (as Hitchcock), Helen Mirren (as Reville) and Scarlett Johansson as "Psycho" star Janet Leigh. It's expected Hopkins will compete for Best Actor against Joaquin Phoenix ("The Master"), Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln"), John Hawkes ("The Sessions") and perhaps Denzel Washington ("Flight"). Check out the photos below. "Hitchcock" is out on Nov. 23.

Anthony Hopkins vanishes (mostly) into 'Hitchcock'
LATimes - almost 5 years
Almost 32 years after his death, Alfred Hitchcock is still shocking audiences — but the petrified patrons are not in any movie theater. Instead, the invited guests (actually paid actors) were inside a Pasadena mansion during the second week of filming for “Hitchcock,” a fictionalized look at the English filmmaker during the preparation, filming and release of 1960’s “Psycho.” Hitchcock — or a very approximate facsimile — was on a recent day throwing a bomb into an otherwise genteel tea party, handing out a batch of gruesome crime scene photographs to announce his intentions to tell a grisly tale of murder and mutilation. The Fox Searchlight production, which could be ready by year's end, stars Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock and Helen Mirren as his wife and creative collaborator, Alma Reville. The cast includes Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins. It is the first narrative feature directed by screenwriter and documentary ...

First Look: Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock
Obsessed with Film - What Cultur - almost 5 years
Fox Searchlight Pictures has debuted the very first look at Anthony Hopkins as the legendary Alfred Hitchcock in Sacha Gervasi’s (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) upcoming biopic. Now we know what Hopkins looks like in Hitch make-up, you can almost hear his voice in your head delivering The Master of Suspense’s immortal dry line, “Good Evening”. Not that I think Hopkins looks much like Hitchcock mind you. Then again he didn’t look a great deal like Richard Nixon either in Oliver Stone’s mid 90′s movie but he delivered a compelling and fiery performance that sure felt like Nixon. Filming began this week on the movie which is now simply going by the title ‘Hitchcock’ and no longer ‘Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho’, the name of the Stephen Rebello book upon which it is based. A wise choice, I’d say. The film revolves around Hitchcock’s mindset during the making of his seminal horror movie ‘Psycho’ and just like last year’s successful ‘My Week With Marilyn’ is a behind-the-curt ...

Hopkins’ Make-Up as Hitchcock
Lez Get Real - almost 5 years
Hopkins in make-up as Hitchcock You wouldn’t think that a movie about the making of Psycho could ever be as interesting as the movie itself, but Sacha Gervasi‘s film Hitchcock has a lot going in its favor. It boasts an impressive cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Toni Collette, Helen Mirren, James D’Arcy and Jessica Biel. The crowning glory of the cast is Anthony Hopkins, who is set to play the iconic Alfred Hitchcock. Hopkins recently revealed his commitment to the character with a first-look image showing  just how impressive an actor’s transformation can be with a little help from some make-up. The make-up is very impressive considering that Hopkins’ normal face has no resemblance to Hitchcock. It’s hard to know how the make-up effect will work in the actual film, but it seems like they are not really going for physical resemblance anyway considering that Scarlett Johansson was cast as Janet Leigh. Alfred Hitchcock It seems that Hitchcock will be telling a fascina ...
