Texans’ Rick Smith in dubious company among NFL general managers
Houston Chronicle - about 1 year
Texans general manager Rick Smith is a polarizing figure among the team’s fan base during its struggles over his tenure, with a particular emphasis on the team’s drafting miscues. He’s also in dubious company among his fellow NFL general managers. Smith is one of only two general managers in the past 25 years to serve at least 10 seasons with his team not reaching a conference championship game. In his 10th season, Smith has two playoff appearances as Texans GM, with a 74-79 record through week 10 of this season. The only other GM to match Smith is Cincinnati’s Mike Brown. But unlike Smith, Brown also owns his franchise, so his job security as GM seems pretty safe. Since Brown took over as the owner/GM in the 1991 season, the Bengals haven’t won a playoff game – including wild-card losses to the Texans in 2011 and 2012 – and lost more than 10 games nine times from 1991 to 2002. Dallas’ Jerry Jones is the other member of the NFL’s owner/GM club, and his team hasn’t reached the ...

UCLA Bruins Will Honor Nick Pasquale With Moment Of Silence Before Game Against New Mexico State
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Last week, Jim Mora promised that UCLA's support for Nick Pasquale and his family won't wane as the season rolls on. The Bruins are following through so far. Before UCLA's 7:30 p.m. kickoff against New Mexico State on Saturday, the Rose Bowl will stand for a moment of silence in memory of the walk-on receiver, who was killed Sept. 8 by a car. After the quiet, however, Mora wants the stadium to erupt. "We're going to get that place going," Mora said. "That's just the challenge for everybody. We're saying 'Go nuts for Nick.' We're going to go crazy and it's going to be a blast." To help, the school will hand out free blue towels to the first 30,000 fans to enter the game. Printed with Pasquale's No. 36, the towels were donated by a company called Gorilla Marketing. UCLA will also sell blue No. 36 T-shirts at the Rose Bowl, with 100 percent of Saturday's proceeds going to the Nick Pasquale Foundation -- established to benefit athletes. Adidas donated the first batch of shirts, but ...

Suffolk Premier Cup final: Richard Wilkins angry at Bury Town
Bury Free Press - almost 5 years
BURY Town manager Richard Wilkins was angry with his side and the referee after Bury Town’s heavy defeat to Lowestoft Town in Thursday’s Suffolk Premier Cup final. The Blues’ boss said he would have to rethink who he kept on in the summer after going down to the 4-2 loss at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road in front of 1,224 fans, who created a tremendous cup final atmosphere. Former Ram Meadow hero Chris Henderson scored the final two goals to really stick the knife in. Wilkins said: “It’s frustrating with the way we defended in the last 15 minutes because it was like the parting of the red sea. “We got an extra goal back, but there were too many players off colour again and there will have to be a rethink in the summer because I think there are quite a few that aren’t quite up to it. “You want big players to play in big games and we haven’t played that well in two big games — we only have ourselves to blame in those game because we weren’t good enough in either. “We were dominant in ...

Suffolk Premier Cup final: Bury Town well beaten by Lowestoft Town
Bury Free Press - almost 5 years
BURY Town were undone by a former hero as they crashed to a 4-2 defeat in the Suffolk Premier Cup final against Ryman League rivals Lowestoft Town. After falling behind to a bizarre own goal when Marcus Garnham punched the ball against the back of Sam Nunn and into the net, the Blues failed to equalise from the penalty spot when Andy Reynolds brilliantly denied Billy Clark. Although John Sands — who had earlier been booked for diving after racing past Scott Mitchell and clean through on goal — levelled when he received Sam Reed’s cutback, swivelled and superbly squeezed a shot past Reynolds. Parity lasted just five minutes as Dale Cockrill finished with aplomb for the edge of the penalty area. Bury were never really in the game after half-time and former Ram Meadow star Chris Henderson twice got behind the Blues’ backline to score and seal his second consecutive Premier Cup triumph having lifted the trophy with bury last year. Lee Smith’s late penalty was mere consolation. Log on ...

Bury and Needham slump to derby defeats
Bury Free Press - almost 5 years
IN an eventful Ryman League Premier Division Suffolk derby, Bury Town slumped to a 3-2 defeat at home to Lowestoft. Sam Reed opened the scoring after just two minutes before Tom Bullard conceded a penalty and was dismissed 22 minutes later for a foul on Chris Henderson. Dean Sinlcair took responsibility and made no mistake to level from the spot. Despite being reduced to 10 men, Bury took a goal advantage into the break as Sam Nunn struck after 29 minutes. However, the visitors struck back again six minutes after the interval as defender Sam Gaughran poked home from close range, before Bury were reduced to nine men as Danny Cunningham went in late on Scott Mitchell. And with the two man advantage, Lowestoft snatched all three points as Lubomir Guentchev struck a dramatic 93rd minute winner. It was also a disappointing bank holiday Monday for Needham Market, who were beaten comfortably 3-0 away to Ryman League Division One North leaders and rivals Leiston. After a goalless first ...
