Black Man Fatally Shot By Cops 21 Times Never Raised Knife, Lawyer Says
Huffington Post - about 1 year
A stabbing suspect in San Francisco who died in a police encounter never raised his knife at officers before being fatally shot 21 times, a lawyer for his family says.  The family of Mario Woods, who was killed in a Dec. 2 encounter with police, filed a wrongful death lawsuit Friday.  Following reports of a stabbing in the city's Bayview neighborhood that day, a group of officers confronted Woods, 26, who refused to drop the knife he was carrying. Police Chief Greg Suhr said that Woods had stabbed a man in the left bicep prior to his confrontation with police, the San Francisco Examiner reported. In a cell phone video released Friday by the Woods family attorney, John Burris, graphic footage of Woods' last moments shows cops surrounding the knife-wielding man.       In the video, officers use pepper spray and rubber bullets on Woods, but he does not drop his knife. A crying woman in the video can be heard saying "just drop it!"   Moments la ...

Julie Bowen's Best Mommy Must-Have: "An Excuse to Get Out of the House"
US Magazine - over 3 years
Julie Bowen, like her Modern Family character Claire, has her hands full at home having to tend to her software engineer husband of seven years Scott Phillips and the couple's son Oliver, 6, and twins John and Gustav, 4. As she continues to film the Emmy-winning Modern Family, Bowen strives to reach a middle ground raising her boys. "[I've learned that] being your kids' best friend is not always the best parenting choice," Bowen has said. PHOTOS: Secrets from the Modern Family set To celebrate the return of Modern Family (the series, costarring Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, runs previous seasons in syndication on USA), Us Weekly rounded up five of Bowen's hilariously optimistic parenting quips that demonstrate that in her family, motherhood can often times be laugh out loud funny. "I was class mom at the preschool one year and I was pretty much asked not to do that again! I would set up meetings for all the moms in class and forget to show up -- not becau ...

BRIDLINGTON TOWN: Cook’s Corner
Birdlington Free Pass - almost 4 years
The view of Bridlington Town boss Mitch Cook “I’VE been saying this for the past few weeks, but this was another thoroughly professional, and organised, performance. Not flashy, but efficient. “I know Staveley have had problems and we’d been told to expect to play a youth team, but they were a very old-looking under 19s in my eyes. “We had our bit of luck in the first few minutes. On another day Mark Wilberforce would have been sent off, instead of getting a yellow card. We wondered if the foul was just outside the box, but a couple of our defenders said it was inside, and we were just left waiting to see what colour card it would be. “After that, I thought Scott Phillips was brilliant throughout the game. He did all the right things for the first goal and set up the second too. “He was really bright in the second half too. He got the bit of luck he deserved for the third goal and then scored the fourth. “I don’t usually go overboard with praise for individuals but he was great. ...

Reader questions and some restaurant changes
Roanoke.com - over 4 years
On the Rise now offers pumpkin latte. iStock photo. I’ve received a couple of emails lately from readers with questions. I also want to share some news about On the Rise bakery and Sarah’s Place, both in downtown Roanoke. * First, Sarah’s Place. This is the cafe that took over the space in the Patrick Henry building that formerly housed Uptown Joe’s donut shop. The cafe has announced that it has started carrying FitFood meals made by a local food prep company that specializes in healthy fare. If you’d like to try before you buy, head over to Sarah’s Place on Thursday between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for a sample. LAX Wi-Fi Contract Approved
Westwood-Century City Patch - over 4 years
Los Angeles, CA -- The Los Angeles City Council approved a plan Wednesday to offer free Wi-Fi at Los Angeles International Airport beginning in mid-July, despite concerns raised that the contractor that will install and run the service was hired inappropriately. The council voted 11-1 in favor of hiring Florida-based Advanced Wireless Group LLC without entertaining bids from other wireless Internet providers. The council also requested an audit of how airport officials selected AWG, which operates Wi-Fi service at airports in Miami, Boston and, soon, San Francisco. Under the new service, set to go into effect on July 16, travelers will see a 15- to 30-second advertisement before gaining access to 45 minutes of free Wi-Fi. The Board of Airport Commissioners, which oversees LAX, approved the contract with AWG on June 4. The City Council last week used its authority over the commission to halt the plan after Councilman Joe Buscaino questioned whether it was the best deal for t ...

Company Approved for LAX Free Wi-Fi Contract
Brentwood Patch - over 4 years
A Los Angeles City Council committee voted Monday in favor of offering free wireless Internet to passengers at Los Angeles International Airport by mid-July, but the plan still faces an obstacle in getting approval from the full 15-member council. The Board of Airport Commissioners, which oversees LAX, approved a contract on June 4 with a Florida-based company to provide the service. The plan would allow travelers to see a 15- to 30-second advertisement before gaining access to 45 minutes of free Internet. The City Council voted unanimously last week to assert its authority over the commission and halt the plan after several council members raised concerns that the contract was improperly awarded to Advanced Wireless Group LLC without entertaining bids from other wireless providers. Officials at Los Angeles World Airports defended the contract and said halting it would put the airport at risk of having no wireless Internet starting July 16, when telecommunications company ...
