Mindfulness in the Workplace: Enhanced Performance and Happier Employees for Small Businesses
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Google does it. Procter & Gamble practices it too. Even insurance company Aetna rolled out what's now a very impressive mindfulness program that's reduced employee turnover, slashed sick days and improved overall business performance. But the study and practice of mindfulness is not limited to larger corporations - smaller businesses and their employees can reap the benefits as well. At Berger Singerman, a business law firm with approximately 85 attorneys and a total of 165 employees, we have implemented an ongoing mindfulness program in the workplace since 2013. Our team members who have participated in the program report significant improvements in their professional performance, increased focus on the task at hand and markedly better listening skills. From a firm perspective, our team members' study and practice of mindfulness has resulted in increased professionalism, collaboration and business performance. All of the skills that have resulted in enhanced performance at wo ...

We get goosebumps just watching this from the safety of our very grounded chairs. Via Devinsupertramp

Comedy Is OK
The Portland Mercury - over 3 years
Ian Karmel is gone. So what about the rest of the comedy scene? by Alison Hallett LAST YEAR, comedian Ron Funches moved to Los Angeles, where he promptly landed a high-profile guest spot on New Girl and filmed a pilot for an NBC sitcom. This week, popular Portland comic Ian Karmel followed Funches to the land of sunburns and success, and it's already paying off: His first TV appearance—a panel spot on Chelsea Lately—will air on Thursday, August 29. Karmel is going to be fine, just like Funches before him, but what about the comedy scene they left behind? Is there now a whooshing, laugh-less vacuum in Portland comedy where Ian and Ron used to stand? Nope. Not even a little bit. There's a danger in identifying a scene too strongly with any one person—because when that person leaves, it can seem like they're taking the whole scene with them. Much to-do surrounded Karmel's departure: There was a month's worth of goodbye shows, exi ...

So, This Should Be Weird: New Comedy Showcase ALL CAPS Debuts Tonight
The Portland Mercury - over 3 years
We've mentioned here before that as Portland's stand-up comedy scene grows and improves (which it is totally doing, and which is really great to see), a side-effect is that you can't turn around anymore without running into yet another stand-up comedy showcase. Now, don't get me wrong. Like I said a second ago, it's great to see the scene and the comics in this town getting better at what they do and getting the exposure to prove it. But ... holy shit, you guys, all of these stand-up showcases begin to run together after a certain point. So it's notable when someone puts together a stand-up show that steps outside of the usual bounds. Tonight, Scott Rogers and Whitney Streed are launching a new show that, if it goes well, I expect we'll see become a monthly occurrence. ALL CAPS, at the Jack London Bar at 9pm, is a character-based stand-up show. All of the comics performing will be playing characters who are not themselves. I'm looking forward to the show beca ...

Bowls: Craigentinny supply the bulk of bowlers for E&L trial
Scotsman - almost 5 years
Edinburgh & Leith have named 35 bowls players in their trial squad ahead of the 2012 Scottish Cities and Counties Championship campaign for the Andrew Hamilton Trophy and they will parade their skills in front of newly appointed team manager Willie Watson of Parkside at Sighthill on Saturday, May 5. Craigentinny have legitimate claims to being the team of the year in the Capital last season so it is no surprise that they supply the bulk of the players with no less than eight. Ian Paterson, the 2001 Tait Trophy Champion, and Andrew Caldwell, the 2005 Scottish Junior Singles Champion, are joined by clubmates Gordon Bold, Willie McDonald, Daniel Gormley, Kevin Hunter, David Brown, and Craig McCall. It is unlikely that all eight will make the team for the opening fixture against West Lothian at Pumpherston on May 12, however all of have legitimate claims be included in the trial. It will rank as a major surprise, however, that E&L have failed to send encouraging signals to Cra ...
