Zaki's Review: Captain America: Civil War
Huffington Post - 10 months
A little over a month ago, Warner Bros.' execrable, excessive Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice arrived in theaters. As you know if you read my review, that film, with its storyline about the aftermath of a destructive superhero battle leading to a battle of wills between heroes, landed with a resounding thud for me. Perhaps my biggest complaint was how it was doing an end-run around its audience by forcing an emotional investment in its characters and their world that hadn't yet been earned. Well, here we are mere weeks later with Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, covering extremely similar thematic and narrative terrain while doing right exactly what the earlier film did so wrong. Believe it or not, it was eight years ago this week that the first Iron Man's huge critical and commercial success kicked off the massive multi-franchise edifice that we've come to know as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then, Marvel Studios has gone from success to success, launching several co ...

Eric Bogosian's 100 Monologues
Huffington Post - about 1 year
monologue: from the Greek μονόλογος; μόνος mónos or "alone, solitary" and λόγος lógos, "speech." The first recorded monologues and soliloquys go back at least as far as ancient Roman and Greek times. But unless you are someone with huge amounts of time on your hands and you love to surf the internet to discover acting gems that don't get theatrical releases-or you happen to live in New York and frequent the theater on a regular basis--It's often hard to see some of our most talented actors in this isolated, most intense form. Eric Bogosian's latest labor of love, which goes by the self-explanatory name of 100Monologues.com is here to remedy that, at least partly. In these one hundred sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic but always revealing monologues written by the three-time Obie award winner and performed by his posse of A-List actors, you get glimpses into his psyche and that of performers that you may never get elsewhere. The themes presented will be familiar to Bogosi ...

Meryl Streep: Trailer drops for “Ricki and the Flash”
Hollywood News - almost 2 years
As is almost always the case, it seems like we’re going to have a Meryl Streep performance in contention for another Academy Award nomination. Luckily for us though, this year it appears like Streep has a bit of a change up in store here, as opposed to overly serious melodrama or biopic type work. Later this year, she’ll be starring in the dramedy Ricki and the Flash, which got a Trailer this week. It looks like she’s as good as ever, but having a ton of fun as well, which certainly could rub off on audiences as well. If so, I’ll be thrilled to have her in the Oscar race for what feels like the 50th time. It won’t feel like tradition this time around. In case you’ve yet to hear anything about this one, it’s a musically tinged dramedy surrounding a musician named Ricki who gave up on the family life in order to pursue a rock and roll career. When her daughter winds up in a tough spot, her ex husband calls her and she returns home in order to try and make things right. The Trailer, which ...

'Thor,' 'Captain America' Land At Disney Expo
Huffington Post - over 3 years
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Angelina Jolie cast a spell on the crowd at the D23 Expo. The star of the upcoming film "Maleficent" appeared on stage at the Disney extravaganza for a Saturday presentation promoting the company's upcoming assortment of live-action films. "Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favorite," Jolie told the crowd of 4,000 fans about her role as a real-life rendition of the "Sleeping Beauty" villainess. "I was terrified of her, but I was so drawn to her. I wanted to know more about her." Jolie said her daughter, Vivienne, who turned 5 years old last month, was cast in the film as a young version of Princess Aurora, mostly because she was the only child who wasn't afraid of Jolie in her horned attire on the set. "One little kid even said, `Mommy, please tell the mean witch to stop talking to me,'" said Jolie. Other stars that appeared at California's Anaheim Convention Center included a few allies of "Marvel's The Avengers." ...

'Once' Fans Will Get 'Something They've Never Seen Before'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The cast and creators of "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" were on hand at ABC's TCA day to discuss the "Once Upon a Time" spinoff's trajectory and the addition of Jafar (Naveen Andrews) to the series' mythology. So far, critics and Comic-Con attendees have only seen 19 minutes of footage from the show's pilot, which feature Alice (Sophie Lowe) in a mental institution with doctors interrogating her about her "delusions" of a visit to a place called Wonderland -- which is only seen in flashbacks -- and her lost love, a genie called Cyrus (Peter Gadiot). The pilot presentation was enough to convince ABC execs to greenlight the fantastical series, but co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis promised that the full pilot will take fans into present-day Wonderland, which will give viewers "a sense of the world now with Alice’s return," as well as introducing them to "Wonderland's" version of Jafar. Andrews was enthusiastic about tackling the classic "Aladdin" villain, ...

'Once Upon A Time' Spinoff Details Emerge
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Looking for another happy ending? The brains behind "Once Upon A Time" have got you covered. According to THR, "Once" consulting producer Jane Espenson and Zach Estrin of ABC's "Zero Hour" have signed on to work on the ABC fairytale drama's spinoff series, which will be set in Wonderland. Originally thought to center on the Mad Hatter -- played by Sebastian Stan on "Once" -- rumors had swirled that the role would be recast. Fans were initially outraged, and producers are now saying they have no plans to recast Stan's role. They are, however, looking for actors to play Alice, The Knave and the mysterious Amahl. No decisions have yet been made, but a short "teaser" will be shot in April with a pilot filming in late July or August. ABC isn't the only network with "Alice In Wonderland" on its radar. "CSI" creator Anthony Zuiker is currently working on an "Alice In Wonderland"-themed pilot for NBC, which is set to take place several years after Alice's adventures down ...

'Amazing Spider-Man 2': Other Marvel Heroes Who Need More Faithful Costumes
MTV News - almost 4 years
by Brett White With the first leaked set photos from "Amazing Spider-Man 2," the fastly-approaching sequel has done the impossible; it's turned skeptics into believers by taking what was one of the more daring redesigns of a classic superhero costume and turned it around into the most faithful one we've ever seen. After seeing how bananas (in the positive sense of the word) the fan base went after seeing a Steve Ditko/Mark Bagley-accurate Spider-Man on set, we thought we'd make a list of the other Marvel heroes whose comic duds could be faithfully recreated onscreen. Thor Thor's original movie look leaned heavily on Olivier Coipel's classic redesign, but with a few liberties. The most notable? Save for one brief scene, Thor didn't wear his winged Asgardian helmet. We think Thor could effortlessly transition into Esad Ribic's new design, currently featured in the comic "Thor: God of Thunder," and bring that iconic headgear to life. Plus, when you have guns like Chris Hemswor ...

Fern Siegel: Stage Door: Picnic, Erth's Dinosaur Zoo
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Life in 1950s Kansas was no picnic. Beneath the repressive conventions of small-town life, desire smolders. In this poignant revival of William Inge's Picnic, now at the American Airlines Theater, sexual allure and sadness co-mingle with emotionally explosive results. When beefy drifter Hal Carter (super-buffed Sebastian Stan) comes to town, he ignites a variety of feelings in local beauty Madge (Maggie Grace) and her brainy tomboy sister Millie (Madeleine Martin). He also raises the protective instincts of Mrs. Potts (Ellen Burstyn) and the suspicions of the girls' weary mother (Mare Winningham). Both seasoned actresses are a pleasure to watch. The women are either trapped or longing for escape, which explains why the play packed punch in 1953, when it won the Pulitzer Prize. While some of its mores may seem dated, Picnic's excellent cast mines its emotional nuances. Hal is a braggart, a former fraternity brother of Alan (Ben Rappaport), the town's rich boy who is s ...

Michael Giltz: Laurie Metcalf Breaks Down at Other Place; Revival No Picnic

FRIEDMAN THEATRE Over-stuffed isn't quite the right word. I'm looking for a term that describes plays like this, plays with so many different storylines and ideas that they exhaust each other out. Whatever that word might be, playwright Sharr White attempts to juggle so many balls that it distracts from appreciating any of them. White offers up a confessional play filled with a present-day presentation, flashbacks and delusional memories. We're told about a teenage daughter who runs away from home and tragically disappears forever, a man accused of luring her away who is driven to suicide, a world-class scientist turned marketing maven launching a new pill that will be worth billions on the market, a mental and/or physical breakdown and the irony of that scientist suddenly suffering ...

David Finkle: First Nighter: Picnic Seesaws, I, Malvolio Sasses
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Forgive me for putting it this way, but Picnic is no picnic. Or if the Roundabout revival of William Inge's 1953 Pulitzer Prize-winning play -- about the drop-in macho fellow who stirs up a group of women for about 24 hours in a sleepy Kansas town -- comes across as something of a picnic, it's one invaded by too many ants. Okay, the metaphor will be discarded now in order to get to the very real problems that director Sam Gold's production runs into -- the first of which is the play itself. The frequently shirtless interloper is Hal Carter (six-pack-abbed Sebastian Stan here), and when Inge's steamy work initially appeared, it seemed as if -- I'm virtually certain about this -- he was intended to represent the kind of male life-force needed to awaken at least a few signs of awareness among several deeply dissatisfied ladies who've previously been misused by men. (Surely, that was the point of the movie adaptation with box-office draw William Holden at a point in his c ...

The first episode brought it 2.6 million viewers, but viewership slipped over the course of its run. The finale had 2.3 million viewers.
