From time machines to faraway islands, area churches offer plenty of VBS options
Blue Ridge Now - almost 5 years
Group VBS Grace Lutheran, Immaculate Conception Catholic, St. James Episcopal, Trinity Presbyterian and Providence Baptist churches are combining to host Vacation Bible School for children and youth from 9 a.m. to noon June 25-28 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 900 Blythe St., Hendersonville. The theme will be "Sonrise National Park." All children who are rising kindergartners through graduating fifth-graders are welcome to register. Youth in grades six through 12 are invited and encouraged to be involved with VBS as helpers. Forms to register children and youth helpers are available at all of the participating churches. Registration is free, but participating families will be asked for a free-will offering to help with the cost of art supplies and instructional materials. When registering, each family will receive a CD of "Sonrise National Park" songs. Daily offerings for Interfaith Assistance Ministry will be encouraged. Sandra Dorsainvil will offer an engaging talk and presentation about Haitian history and culture on Monday, May 21 at the Stephen Palmer Senior Center. She is the pastor at The First Baptist Church of Sharon and is the third woman to be called in the church’s 198-year history. In addition to her pastoral ministry degree from Boston College, Dorsainvil holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Boston University. Her passion for mission work was ignited during the sixteen years she lived in various African countries with her family in the 1960s and 1970s. She has led several mission trips nationally to Oklahoma and internationally to Haiti and Peru. This presentation and luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend. By Sherry Jackson, Associate Director If you are age 65 and up, or a person with a disability, you qualify for an MBTA reduced fare Charlie Card ID. This card offers reduced fares when riding the MBTA trains or buses. On Thursday, April 19, between 10 a.m. and noon, the Needham Council on Aging will hold an MBTA Senior Citizen or (T.A.P.) Charlie Card Pass Event, providing the cards for individuals who bring ID with proof of age. COA staff will take your photograph, and your new card will be delivered to you by mail. The card is free of charge. For more information, contact the MBTA office at 617-222-5438. The event will be held at the Stephen Palmer Senior Center. There is no sign-up or fee.     That same year, Jackson began a five-year relationship with business executive and horse breeder Fletcher R. Jones, a union that ended on November 7, 1972, when Jones was killed in a California plane crash.
    More Details Hide Details Five months after Jones' death, Jackson filed suit against his estate, asking more than $1 million, with her attorneys stating that Jones had promised to provide her with at least $25,000 a year for the rest of her life. The litigation proved to be unsuccessful. Jackson received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 8, 1960. It is located at 6324 Hollywood Blvd.

    When Blake Edwards remade the Peter Gunn television series as a feature film entitled Gunn in 1967, Jackson was filmed in a nude scene that appeared only in the international version, not the U.S. release.
    More Details Hide Details Stills of the nude scene appeared in the August 1967 issue of Playboy magazine, in a pictorial entitled "Make Room For Sherry". The movie has not yet been released on VHS or DVD. Ironically, the Peter Gunn TV series on NBC had been scheduled opposite Make Room For Daddy on CBS for two seasons.

Over the next few years, Jackson broadened her range of acting roles, appearing as a hit woman on 77 Sunset Strip, an alcoholic on Mr. Novak, and an unstable mother-to-be on Wagon Train. She then made guest appearances on Lost in Space, Batman and the original Star Trek series. On the latter program, she made one of her more memorable portrayals as the android "Andrea" in the episode, "What are Little Girls Made Of? "
