In the first round of women's singles, she stunned 22nd seed Francesca Schiavone 6-3, 6-4 in front of the home crowd in the Louis Armstrong stadium. She then defeated Tatjana Malek 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Stephens then faced No. 12 seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. Ivanovic was two games away from losing against American crowd favorite Sloane Stephens, but she managed to dig deep and prevail in a marathon 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 win with plenty of dramatic points and shifts in momentum. The turning point of the match came at 4-4 in the second set, when Stephens held several game points on her own serve to go up 5-4.
