U.S. television, Twitter, alive with new version of 'Sound of Music'
Yahoo News - about 3 years
By Jill Serjeant NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. television was alive with "The Sound of Music" on Thursday as country singer Carrie Underwood and "True Blood" actor Stephen Moyer starred in a live version of the classic musical about an aspiring nun who falls in love with an Austrian captain. Filmed on vast movie sets and with lavish costumes but without an audience, the NBC television broadcast harked back to the traditions of the 1950s and 1960s when live musicals were often shown on American television. Thursday's three-hour show was based on the 1959 stage version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein show rather than the Oscar-winning 1965 musical starring Julie Andrews. After heavy promotion for weeks, the live broadcast was the No. 2 topic on Twitter on Thursday, behind the death of South African anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.

Carrie Underwood and Company Shine on the New Cast Album for NBC's Live Sound of Music
Huffington Post - about 3 years
We've all seen endless commercials by now. You'd have to live under a rock not to know that NBC will present Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical, The Sound of Music, on Thursday (December 5) at 8 p.m. (EST), and it will be done live. Maria, the misfit postulant in pre-war Austria, will be played by blond and lovely Carrie Underwood, a Grammy-winning singer who also placed first on American Idol. If you grew up watching the 1965 Julie Andrews film, you might not envision Miss Underwood as the ideal choice for this iconic role. But if, like me, you also grew up listening to Mary Martin's 1959 original cast recording, you might be inclined to give Ms. Underwood and company a chance. Which is what I did yesterday as I listened to the newly released Columbia Mastworks CD. I've watched clips as the cast rehearsed for its one and only performance, a throwback to 1957 when Sound of Music creators, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, staged another live show, Cinderella, on CBS. 'Sound of Music' Airtime Nears! Anybody Nervous?
Huffington Post - about 3 years
NEW YORK (AP) — How do you solve a problem like preparing a classic Broadway musical for live TV? If you're the stars of NBC's "The Sound of Music Live!" you practice hard and hear the clock ticking toward 8 p.m. EST on Dec. 5. But, even so, they have confidence in confidence alone. "Yeah, I get sweaty palms thinking about it," allows Christian Borle (who plays Max). "But it will be a kick! It will be an adrenaline rush!" "I'm not worried about the actual production," echoes Stephen Moyer (Capt. von Trapp). "Yes, it will be nerve-racking. But the most important thing was that I said, 'Yes, I'll do it.'" Laura Benanti (Elsa) explains, "I have reframed nervousness to its second cousin, excitement. I don't know what this is gonna feel like. But I'm excited!" "I'm really hoping that on Dec. 5 we will have done it so much that it'll feel like just another rehearsal," says Carrie Underwood (Maria). "Obviously, there'll be a heightened awareness of what's happening, but I'm hoping th ...

Stephen Moyer On The Final Season Of 'True Blood' & Why A Bill-Eric Sex Scene Probably Won't Happen
Huffington Post - about 3 years
The sun is about to set on Bon Temps, and Stephen Moyer isn't ready to say goodbye. The actor, famous for playing good-gone-bad-gone-good-again Bill Compton, sat down with The Huffington Post to talk about his role on NBC's "The Sound of Music," but also opened up about the final season of "True Blood." He's directing the first episode, but insists he has no idea what's in store. And though he's been rooting for a Bill-Eric sex scene, here's why we probably won't get to see that anytime soon. How do you feel going into the final season? I don't know anything and I’m directing the first episode. I haven't gotten a script yet and we start shooting in January. I’m really excited, really sad. It’s just a group of people that I absolutely love and it’s certainly the happiest and warmest set I’ve ever been on, so that’s going to be hard to walk away from. Did you always know that Bill was going to be a good guy in the end? No, but I thought it was great for the show. I’m a really stron ...

Julie Andrews On NBC's 'Daunting' Live Production Of 'Sound Of Music'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Julie Andrews, the star of the 1965 classic "The Sound of Music," isn't fazed by NBC's new live production of the classic musical starring Carrie Underwood. "Fifty years later, it's time somebody had another crack at it. I had the best time of my life doing it, and it did wonderful things for me," Andrews told Zap2It. "I think it's great that it's being done again, but doing it live must be so daunting ... I do hope it works for Carrie, because she's lovely and I'm a fan. I wish her well." NBC's version of "The Sound of Music," which will air live on Dec. 5, will be the original 1959 Broadway version of the musical -- which is different from the film version most audiences are familiar with. "I know they're not doing the movie, though. They're doing the Broadway show -- that's what they have the rights to -- and I don't know whether it will resonate similarly," Andrews added before noting that the film's producers had cut elements from the stage version and added songs.
