Political Candidate Allowed To Use Latino Surname, Judge Rules
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Steven Chavez Lodge, a candidate running for Anaheim City Council in California, will be permitted to use his surname "Chavez" on the ballot, an Orange County Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday. Judge Charles Margines initially ruled to ban Lodge from using the surname in the election -- the outcome of a lawsuit filed by political blogger Cynthia Ward, accusing Lodge of using the Latino name for political gain -- but the judge has since done a complete 180 and reversed his earlier ruling. For the second time in 2012, the Rancho Santa Margarita City Council had a state championship winning sports team in its council chambers. Back in January, it was a football team. On Wednesday night, the council honored the Santa Margarita Catholic High ice hockey club for winning this year's state championship. “You’ve made the city very proud,” Mayor Tony Beall said to the gathered students, family and coaches at the beginning of the meeting. “The Eagle players and coaching staff are great representatives of the city of Rancho Santa Margarita.” After players and coaches gathered in front of the dais, Beall read a proclamation recognizing the team for its efforts. In addition to being local league champions for the third consecutive year, the Eagles won the California Amateur Hockey Association’s State Championship with a 4-1 victory over San Jose’s Bellarmine Prep. Mayor Pro Tem Steve Baric congratulated the state champions on their efforts, saying that the victory ...

TELEVISION REVIEW; A Colt Born on a Battlefield, When Men Were Gallant
NYTimes - over 11 years
You might expect a movie about an adorable newborn animal who melts the hearts of soldiers at war to be syrupy, sentimental and not worth the viewing time of anyone older than 8. FILM REVIEW; Spies and Assassins Pack Plenty of Pow

You could call ''Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever'' the dark side of ''Spy Kids.'' Not only because a family is swept into the espionage biz, with a little boy as the bait used in a battle between a pair of disaffected spy-agency renegades, but also because the picture looks as if it were lighted with a 20-watt bulb.
