Syfy's Newest Hero Talks About His Role In The Hit Show "The Expanse"
Huffington Post - about 1 month
NPR praised The Expanse last year as the best science fiction in a decade for its grasp of physics in a future unlike ours. The characters live two hundred years from now when Mars and the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter are restive former colonies of Earth. One example of getting the physics just right: many of the show's scenes are set in space ships where things like weightlessness are perfectly realized down to the smallest detail. But the best realism in this series may be what's all too similar to our own: betrayal, corruption, greed, aggression, and racism. They play out in the complex interlocking stories of a UN diplomat trying to stave off war between Mars and Earth, a battered PI on a missing persons case that unlocks a horrific biological secret with galactic implications, and a ship captain who starts out as an ordinary Joe but assumes heroic stature when his ship is destroyed and he brushes up against that secret. People often dismiss genres like mys ...

Season Two of "The Expanse" Will Rock Your World(s)
Huffington Post - about 1 month
I fell in love with aliens and outer space in second grade. No, I wasn't abducted. Not exactly. My brother was a big fan of Golden Age science fiction and once I started browsing through the Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and Arthur C. Clark books he borrowed from our local library, I was hooked. I was able to read well beyond my grade level in elementary school, and the stories weren't just more exciting than the lifeless "age-appropriate" books I was assigned at school. I was a first generation American, unlike everyone in all of my classes, and those thrilling library books spoke to my sense of being a stranger in a strange land. I felt welcomed, I felt liberated. I didn't know back then that I was reading some of America's finest writers in the genre, but they set a very high standard for me. That taste for superlative science fiction has stayed with ever since, and I've always been thrilled to find a new writer, a new movie, a new series that satisfies it. I've lost tr ...

'Magic City' Gets 'Darker, Crazier And More Vicious'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
"Magic City" Season 2 premieres Friday, June 14 (9 p.m. ET on Starz), and Jeffrey Dean Morgan promises that the new year brings a story that's "darker, crazier and more vicious" than anything we saw last season (which featured blackmail, murder and voyeuristic sex acts on a weekly basis). Plus, Season 2 boasts Oscar nominee James Caan returning to his "Godfather" roots as a Chicago mobster whom Morgan simply describes as "a scary dude." So what lengths will Ike Evans (Morgan) go to in order to rid his Miramar Playa Hotel of the mob and Ben “The Butcher” Diamond (Danny Huston)? And will his long-shot gamble tear the Evans family apart? Find out what Morgan told HuffPost TV to expect from "Magic City" Season 2 below. Last time we saw Ike, he was in jail for murder, with State Attorney Jack Klein (Matt Ross) determined to throw away the key. Where does the beginning of Season 2 find him? I'm guessing the whole season isn't set with Ike in jail ... [Laughs.] No, no -- we ha ...

Maureen Ryan: 'Magic City' Review: Jeffrey Dean Morgan Headlines Starz's Retro Mob Drama
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
It can't be denied that the makers of "Magic City" (10 p.m. ET Friday, Starz) assembled a promising list of ingredients for this period drama. Watching "Magic City," which is set at a swanky Miami hotel in the late '50s, one can't help but think about what might have been, given that some of the show's influences and references are pretty top-notch (though others are not, as you'll see from the list below). Here are just a few of the aspects of pop culture that "Magic City" draws from: "Mad Men." It's not just that the Starz drama begins just two years before 1960, which is when the first season of the AMC drama was set -- there are echoes of Don Draper all over the place. The moody score recalls the soundtrack of the superior AMC show, and the lead character of "Magic City," hotel owner Isaac "Ike" Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), is a ruggedly handsome, dark-haired man who likes to smoke, drink and stare into the sky as he ponders his personal and professional dilemma ...

'Magic City' lights up Starz: A Q&A with designer Carol Ramsey
LATimes - almost 5 years
When it comes to television costumes as fashion inspiration, “Magic City,” Mitch Glazer’s new show set in Miami Beach in 1959 that premieres Friday on Starz, has the potential to be the next “Mad Men” or “Boardwalk Empire.” The show centers around the glamorous Miramar Playa Hotel, where even the call girls dress to the nines. By day, it’s cha-cha lessons and mahjong by the pool. By night, the Kennedys, the mob, the CIA and Frank Sinatra all hold court. Hotel owner Ike Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is the man with the dream. His wife Vera Evans, a former showgirl (Olga Kurylenko), and his three children think he’s honorable, but he sells his soul to mob boss Ben “The Butcher” Diamond (Danny Huston) to finance the operation. I chatted with costume designer Carol Ramsey (“Meet the Fockers,” “Horrible Bosses”) about what she says was “a dream job” designing looks for beauty queens, sharp-dressed ladies' men and the seedier side that comes out at night. How is style important to this ...
