7 Shocking Facts About Food Industry Marketing You Should Know
Huffington Post - over 3 years
By Nate Morrow Have you noticed how many packaged foods are good for you these days? Strolling through the lanes of my local supermarket, it struck me that we are inundated with products claiming to be healthy in some ambiguous way. On one side of me was a vast collection of snack crackers and cookies claiming to be "all natural" or "made with whole grains." On the other was an impressive array of ice cream bars and popsicles bathed in green labels with taglines like "excellent source of calcium" or "made with real fruit." After recovering from the shock of how disingenuous the snack food industry can be, I continued my trek through the store, trying to identify all the deceptive health claims along the way. Before making it through a second aisle, though, I gave up and came to one, inevitable conclusion: These companies are not trying to make you healthy -- they are trying to sell you a product. With that in mind, let's take a look at a few ways these manufacturers ca ...

10 Airport Foods You Should Never Eat
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Whether you're dashing to make a flight or stranded at the gate for hours, start your trip off right by avoiding these super unhealthy choices for airport food and drink. Crispy Green Beans, P.F. Chang's China Bistro Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport consistently places last in rankings of airports with the healthiest food options, and its new P.F. Chang's certainly isn't going to help. Got time for a sit-down meal and think that the Crispy Green Beans sound like a healthy choice? (They're a vegetable and they're green -- what could go wrong?) Think again. One order without sauce contains 895 calories; the sauce adds an extra 310 calories in just two ounces of liquid. What are they doing to those poor green beans? Caramel Pecanbon, Cinnabon Cinnabon stores have become almost as ubiquitous in airports as they are in shopping malls -- no wonder, as airports have thousands of captive flyers, typically with low willpower, to tempt with that Cinnabon smell. 10 Ways To Cut Sugar Out Of Your Diet
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Madeline Vann, Everyday Health Living well with diabetes means managing the amount of sugar you consume. But while too much sugar isn't good for anyone (whether you have diabetes or not), you don't have to give up the sweet stuff entirely. “Small portions are key,” says endocrinologist Tamara Hannon, MD, associate professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. To make the most of what you can enjoy, first root out all the unnecessary sugar in your diet. These simple changes can help you cut back. Use Sugar-Free Substitutes: One option, and perhaps the most popular, is to eat or drink the sugar-free versions of your favourite sugary foods and beverages, like soda. When it comes to dessert or a snack, sugar-free Jell-O is a “free” food in a type 2 diabetes diet that can give you a little sweetness. However, warns Dr. Hannon, some sugar substitutes might interfere with your ability to control blood sugars, so go easy on these p ...

Alex Jamieson: Healthy Holiday Recipes for Kids (and Adults) Who Love Sugar
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Holiday season is upon us. Sugar season is here! Instead of over-indulging from Halloween through January 1st, I've committed to a "Sugar Free 'till Thanksgiving" challenge. It's my way of protecting my health, while still enjoying the celebrations with family and friends. Basically, my Facebook tribe and I have declared to the world that we're avoiding all added sugars until Thanksgiving. No big deal. But here's the problem. My son and I crave sugar. We love it. Now, I don't drink daily 32 ounces of soda like back in college, but I was getting in the habit of chomping through a bar of dark chocolate every few days. So I've come up with some easy, sugar-free sweet recipes that both my son and I love. These recipes are great if you're diabetic, have hormonal imbalances, know you're addicted to sugar and want to give yourself a break, or have an underlying candida overgrowth and know that you need to avoid refined sugars. Our favorite sweet vegetable is swe ...

Jon Hotchkiss: Bias and Ice Cream
Huffington Post - over 4 years
I would like to tell you a story. It's a story about bias. Bias and ice-cream. Once upon a time there was a man who owned a pharmacy that had a luncheonette counter. However, the man refused to sell ice-cream to all females because a few years back, some lady ruined his white t-shirt when she threw her ice-cream at him because she caught him checking out her rear end. Since t-shirts are expensive and the man didn't want to get ice-cream thrown at him ever again, he refused to sell ice cream to all women. The end. In this example of bias -- the shop owner has applied the results of a single incident to the entire female population. This is the worst kind of bias. This shopkeeper should be hunted down and killed. Or, at the very least, be ostracized by decent people everywhere. Also, he's a terrible businessman. And, he's an idiot, too, because not all women will throw ice cream when their rear end is checked out. Some will be indifferent. Some won't not ...

Grocery Shopping Makes Me Ask Questions About Prices
Chesterfield Patch - almost 5 years
It is getting harder and harder to save money grocery shopping. When I got to the big box stores that have food and grocery sections, I still often have to have a calculator to find out which product or which box is the best deal. But even when I’m trying to save money or find my favorite brands I get confused and ask questions, last week I even called those 800 numbers on the products to try and get some answers.    Skippy is an example is how one store forced me to drive to a competitor. When Schnucks stopped carrying Skippy Peanut Butter, a national favorite I would drive to Dierbergs to buy my favorite peanut butter. Then Walmart opened food centers, I could get Skippy there at a cheaper price. Now Costco sells giant jars of Skippy which are even cheaper. Borden Cheese: The same was true with packs of Borden American cheese slices. Schnucks didn’t carry the product, only Kraft and a store brands. I preferred Borden because it contains more milk per slice than Kraft and is ...
