Kate Kelly: Graphic Novels Tackle Tough Subjects to Help Kids Understand
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
How do you talk about genocide, human trafficking, modern slavery, oppression and the overall importance of human rights in ways that students can understand? For James Disco, the answer lies in creating graphic novels that tackle tough topics. James Disco's day job involves working for the Dallas Tennis Association, teaching tennis to underprivileged children. This work that gives him an empathetic window into a world of children who cannot necessarily expect fairness or compassion, and this has inspired him to do work that stresses the importance of human rights. His first effort was a graphic novel about the recent genocide in Sudan, Echoes of the Lost Boys of Sudan. The introduction to the book was written by Dr. Richard Halperin, director of the Embrey Human Rights Education Program at Southern Methodist University. In an interview published on the website, Gender Across Borders, Halperin is quoted as saying that publishing stories on difficult subjects i ...

‘I thought we were going to die in pool’
Milton Keynes Citizen - almost 5 years
A WOMAN and three young children almost drowned in a city swimming pool while two lifeguards were allegedly too busy chatting to notice. Mabel Freytag says she spent at least 60 seconds convinced she and the children would die before a fellow swimmer came to their rescue at Bletchley Leisure Centre. Now leisure centre managers Hertsmere are holding a full investigation into the incident and are already interviewing the lifeguards. Mabel’s horror happened on Saturday afternoon when she visited the pool with her eight-year-old son Jamal, her niece Nina, aged seven, and her son’s friend. Mabel, at the children’s insistence, was towing the trio on a float in the deep end when Jamal, a capable swimmer, slipped off. This caused the other two youngsters to fall off, pushing Mabel underwater. “I’m a strong swimmer and my niece is too. But suddenly I was underwater with all three children panicking and grabbing hold of me. “They were clutching at my neck, my arms... I was splashing abou ...

Alex Karras Joins Players' Lawsuit Against NFL
Huffington Post Sports - almost 5 years
-- To a generation of TV and film fans, Alex Karras will forever be the loving adoptive dad on the 1980s sitcom "Webster" or the big guy who punched a horse in 1974's "Blazing Saddles." Before his acting days, he was a football star, a three-time All-Pro defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions in the 1960s. Now 76, and diagnosed with dementia, Karras is taking on the role of lead plaintiff: He and his wife, Susan Clark, are two of 119 people who filed suit Thursday in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, the latest complaint brought against the NFL by ex-players who say the league didn't do enough to protect them from head injuries. "All through the time that I've been with him, he has suffered headaches and dizziness and high blood pressure and all kinds of things that are ... usually the result of multiple concussions," Clark said from Los Angeles in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "This physical beating that he took as a football player has ...
