Salazar: 'Shell Screwed Up In 2012'
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Shell was not fully prepared when it launched its trouble-plagued Arctic offshore drilling program last year, and the oil company also fell short in overseeing key contractors in the effort, according to a federal report released Thursday. The report follows a 60-day review by the Interior Department that focused on problems Royal Dutch Shell PLC experienced with its drilling vessels and a spill containment vessel. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the company will have to submit more comprehensive plans before it would be allowed to operate in the Arctic again. "Shell screwed up in 2012," Salazar said in a teleconference with reporters. The report recommends that a more detailed plan include schedules of contractor work on critical components. It also recommends that Shell commission a third-party audit of the company's management systems. Shell drilled last year in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska's northwest coast and in the Beaufort Sea ...

Giant panda cub that died at U.S. zoo had abnormal liver
Yahoo News - over 4 years
(Reuters) - The death of a six-day-old giant panda cub at the National Zoo in Washington - an agonizing blow to wildlife conservation efforts - could be linked to an abnormal liver, the zoo's chief veterinarian said on Monday. A day after the zoo's staff failed to revive the cub with lifesaving measures, including CPR, the initial results of an examination showed the panda was likely a female whose body displayed no obvious signs of trauma or infection. "Her coat was beautiful. It was in very good condition," veterinarian Suzan Murray said at a press conference. ...

Shell president optimistic about Arctic offshore drilling despite setback with safety system
Fox News - over 4 years
Shell is limiting Arctic drilling off Alaska to just preparation work this year after suffering several setbacks, but the company says it remains optimistic about the project's prospects. Netherlands-based Royal Dutch Shell PLC said earlier Monday that a containment dome required to be in place before drills can enter oil-bearing rock in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas was damaged Saturday during testing off Bellingham, Wash. Environmental groups quickly blasted the company, saying the latest setback and others are evidence the oil industry cannot safely drill in the Arctic. Marvin Odum, president of Shell Oil Co., Royal Dutch Shell's U.S. subsidiary, told The Associated Press that although the company no longer plans to drill deep enough to reach oil this year, it has made great strides with its exploratory wells off the Alaska coast. "That drilling is going to be limited to top holes, but that is a tremendous step forward in t ...

Some Mo. University Faculity Call for Same-Sex Benefits
CBS St. Louis - almost 5 years
ROLLA, Mo. (AP) — Professors at the Missouri University of Science and Technology have approved a resolution calling for benefits for same-sex partners of university employees. Professor Susan Murray says she hopes Thursday’s vote at the Rolla campus will send a message to the Missouri Board of Curators that the benefits should be available on all University of Missouri campuses. The faculty council at Missouri’s Columbia campus and faculty groups at Missouri-St. Louis and Missouri-Kansas City approved similar resolutions two years ago. Student groups on all four campuses also have supported offering the benefits. The Columbia Tribune reports University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe has said he plans to make a recommendation on the issue to the curators by the end of the year. © Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. Earth Day School Project With Sickles Market Grows Into Gardening Project
Little Silver-Oceanport Patch - almost 5 years
From little acorns, mighty oaks grow. And from the ‘seed’ of an idea, Sickles Market, along with students from Point Road School, has taken an annual Earth Day event and grown it into a fun and educational gardening experience that provides lifelong lessons for students. On Friday April 20 at 1:30 p.m. more than 400 students at Point Road School will present their grocery bags decorated with Earth Day messages to Bob Sickles, third generation owner of Sickles Market, and in a show of thanks, he will hand deliver a lettuce seedling to each child. It started four years ago when the school’s Green Team approached Bob Sickles, owner of Sickles Market, asking if the market would take part in the school’s Earth Day celebration. The idea – called the Earth Day Groceries Project, a national program – was for Sickles to provide schoolchildren with plain brown shopping bags, which they would decorate with drawings and environmental messages, such as “Save Our Planet” or “Reuse This Bag.” The ...
