Newcomer Talitha Bateman Shines in "So B. It" Movie -- a Heartbreaking Story that Will Leave You Smiling
Huffington Post - 9 months
Talitha Bateman. Tuck that name away in your memory palace. The teenage actor gives a brave, eye-opening performance in So B. It, a poignantly sweet yet funny movie, a tale about love, loss, and reconnecting with what matters most in life -- family and being authentic. Bateman, who was 13 at the time of filming, is a dynamo, and her acting in one money shot when she falls apart bawling from the very depths of her soul will break anyone's hardened heart. So B. It, which is based on author Sarah Weeks' book, premieres at the LA Film Festival on June 7. It's directed by illustrious Stephen Gyllenhaal, and has a sterling veteran cast of performers including Alfre Woodard, John Heard and Cloris Leachman, as well as Jessica Collins, Jacinda Barrett and Dash Mihok. It's a great talent mix that was brought together by casting director Richard Hicks (Zero Dark Thirty, Gravity) to work on the type of "wonderful movie script that doesn't get made much anymore," suggests producer J. To ...

Diana Ryu: Hed: My Favorite Palette-Cleansing Blogs
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
I love blogs. I devour them. I go through hundreds of them every morning and nearly had a fit when I caught wind of Google pulling the plug on their subscriber-based, aggregate program, Reader. The subject matter of my dailyreads run the gamut, from interior design to culture, food to fashion, and I am attached to them with nearly the same addictive behavior as a smoker: Don't bother me 'til I've ingested my daily dose of hi-res images. I was a loyal reader even before the savvy industry pioneers started to use affiliate links to make money and were poached by agents to manage their hefty brand contracts. I've been along for the ride to see bloggers rise to legitimate celebrity status and get excited because I feel like I know them. And while I love myself a beautiful, crisp, "Outfit Of The Day," sometimes I need a palette cleanser of sorts to remind myself that I'm not reading these guys out of habit, but because I actually value them as tastemakers. Indispensable Advice For Quvenzhane Wallis
Huffington Post - about 4 years
At only 9 years old, Quvenzhane (Kuh-VAHN-zuh-nay) Wallis is the youngest ever Best Actress nominee for an Academy Award. Her portrayal of Hushpuppy in the magically poignant "Beasts of the Southern Wild" earned her many accolades, but her nomination was polarizing. Is she too young? Is it too soon? Shouldn't actors with more experience and a substantial body of work deserve the honor? Be that as it may, Quvenzhane is in the race and may go up onstage this Sunday. In case that happens, here are some tips she can borrow from past Best Actress winners and their unforgettable speeches: Takeaways from Julia Roberts (who won in 2000 for "Erin Brockovich"): Be funny, be humble, keep it short and do not go overboard with the thanks (the clock is there for a reason). Takeaways from Halle Berry (who won in 2001 for "Monster's Ball"): Crying is totally understandable, but try to get some words in. The world is watching. (Gwyneth Paltrow's teary-eyed speech in 1998 conveys t ...

The Youngest Oscar Nominees In History
Huffington Post - about 4 years
LOS ANGELES — "Beasts of the Southern Wild" star Quvenzhane Wallis is an actress of talent, poise and maturity well beyond her years. She was only 5 years old when she auditioned and 6 when she played the part of Hushpuppy, a little girl of fierce strength and resourcefulness living with her daddy in a squalid slab of Louisiana swampland known as The Bathtub. She was just a regular kid from nearby Houma, La. – she'd never even acted before, and actually pretended to be a year older than she was to be considered. Now, at only 9, Quvenzhane (Kuh-VAHN-zuh-nay) is the youngest-ever actress nominee at the Academy Awards. Altogether, "Beasts" has four nominations at the Feb. 24 ceremony, including best picture. While her presence is undeniable, Quvenzhane's nomination raises the question: How young is too young to compete for an Oscar, the film industry's highest honor, which has eluded performers with decades more experience and acclaim? Is a child really capable of ...

Tom O'Neil: What Will the Oscar Upsets Be?
The Huffington Post - about 4 years
Nothing in Hollywood goes according to script, especially at the Oscars. In past years, for example, just when most of the award pundits made up their minds that Viola Davis (The Help) and Julie Christie (Away from Her) would win Best Actress of 2011 and 2007, Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) and Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) pulled off jaw-droppers. This year the pundits polled by Gold Derby say Lincoln will win Best Picture, Director (Steven Spielberg), Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones). Best Actress is believed to be between Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and it's widely presumed that Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) has Supporting Actress in the bag. Pundit support for Lincoln is bolstered by the fact that it leads with the most nominations (12), which usually translates into victory in the top race. However, let's recall that Hugo had the most bids last year and The Artist took Best Pic ...

Oprah Gets A New Chance
Huffington Post - about 4 years
NEW YORK — Oprah Winfrey's interview with Lance Armstrong is more than an illustration of a hero athlete tumbling from the heights. It's also a pivotal moment for a famous media figure trying to climb the ladder back up. Winfrey's OWN network is showing signs of life after a rocky start, and the Armstrong interview offered a chance for many more viewers to check it out. The former Tour de France cyclist admitted to cheating with performance enhancing drugs throughout his career during the first half of the interview Thursday night. That program was seen by a total of 4.3 million viewers in Thursday's back-to-back airings, OWN said Friday. But it drew only 3.2 million viewers in its first airing, an audience that fell short of OWN's most-viewed telecast: an interview Winfrey conducted with the Whitney Houston family last March following the singer's death the previous month. The second half of the Armstrong interview is to air Friday night. The interview "sho ...

Cancer-Stricken Ryan O'Neal Admits He Was 'Bad Dad'
The Stir - almost 5 years
Post by Kiri Blakeley I have a big confession to make. I used to have the biggest crush on Ryan O'Neal. Seriously. Have you ever seen him in Paper Moon or Love Story? Or, my favorite (hey, I was just kid), The Main Event? This guy was smokin'! Oh, how the times have changed. Lately, Ryan is better known for his temper, his terrible parenting, and his arrest for drugs (which he claims belonged to his son Redmond.) Ryan is proof positive that you shouldn't pick your children's future father based on looks alone! On The Today Show promoting his new memoir, Ryan looked like a broken man. He even had a bandage on his nose. He's also got prostate cancer. Asked by Matt Lauer whether he had been a "bad parent" to his four children, including Tatum O'Neal who starred with him in Paper Moon, Ryan said, "Looks like it, doesn't it? Sure looks like it. I suppose I was." Yeah, maybe so. Three of his four kids have had addiction issues and been in and out of jail. He also admits in his memoir that ...

Tatum O’Neal rumors placed the Oscar winner back in rehab to deal with her addiction to cocaine but a representative for the actress says that the rumors are false.
