Terri Nunn: Guest Judging Drag Race Influenced New Berlin Video
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Starting with an openly gay bandmate at the group's onset, Terri Nunn said Berlin had an LGBT following long before topping charts with "Take My Breath Away." In a continuing nod to this solid fan base, Nunn even guest judged RuPaul's Drag Race. In fact, that experience is reflected in the synth-pop duo's upcoming video, the singer said. "One of the guys I met filming Drag Race who was just so amazing is Raven," said the New Wave singer, best known for the Oscar-winning love theme from 1987 blockbuster Top Gun. "He just blew me away!" During a telephone interview, Nunn revealed the Los Angeles-based runner-up of both RuPaul's Drag Race, Season 2 and RuPaul's All-Star Drag Race is heavily featured in the music video introducing Berlin's seventh studio album, Animal. "She's in quite a starring role -- a costarring role," Nunn said of Raven's part in the album's title track video. "We have some fun together. I'm so glad he was able to do it!" Filmed in a working L.A. area dunge ...

Goddess of New Wave: A Conversation With Berlin's Terri Nunn
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Photo by Matt Beard It was in the midst of glam metal and punk rock in late 1970s Los Angeles that Terri Nunn, the queen of New Wave, emerged as the lead vocalist of Berlin. Nunn mesmerized with tantalizing appeal, encompassing the alluring glam of David Bowie combined with the powerful confidence of Grace Slick. Synthesizers and electronic beats drove hits including "The Metro," "Sex (I'm A...)," and "No More Words," making Berlin cultural innovators of electronic dance music. Berlin recently released their seventh studio album, Animal, and while many artists have created long-lasting careers by changing their style incessantly, Nunn has maintained a distinct core sound while continuing to exude a strong and intriguing appeal. I recently spoke with Nunn about the US Festival, Grace Slick, childhood in a record shop, and the creation of Animal. It was great seeing you last week at the Grammy Museum for the event surrounding Animal's release. It was also great to have Steve Woz ...

Xaque Gruber: Boardners Celebrates 70 Years As Hollywood Boulevard's Classic Bar
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
In the shadows of Norma Desmond-era Hollywood, just 49 steps south of James Caan's star on the Walk of Fame, is a vestige of Tinseltown's long-vanished Golden Era bar scene. Passing through the black curtain, you adjust your eyes to the dimly lit, art deco interior, and enter the legendary, defiant outpost of fun known for seven decades as Boardners, home to some of Hollywood's best late night noshes, stiffest drinks and booziest lore. The history of the building (located at 1652 North Cherokee Blvd to be exact) mirrors the history of Hollywood itself. Boardeners has been serving the public since 1927 (the year of the inaugural Oscars) when crooner Gene Austin named the bar My Blue Heaven, after his chart topping song. Like any respectable 1920s cocktail lounge, My Blue Heaven was complete with a smiling hat check girl stationed in the location of the present-day bar. It then became The Cherokee Men's House, one of the first nightclubs catering to homosexual client ...
