A-Sides with Jon Chattman: The 66 Best Things in Pop Culture in 2016
Huffington Post - about 2 months
2016 was a bad year. We know it. It's been written everywhere. The world is in complete disarray. Even if you voted for Trump, you have to agree with that. Celebrity deaths were too much to handle. The Oscars were "so white." Mariah pulled a Milli Vanilli at the final hour. I could go on and on, but I won't. The year wasn't all bad. Here are my personal favorite things about the year in film, television, and music in no particular order. Share your own below. Here's hoping 2017 is better. Believe in hope. 1. The Chicago Cubs winning The World Series and Bill Murray and John Cusack's reactions to it 2. Lion - the acting, writing, and direction 3. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in Fences 4. David Bowie's grand exit - Lazarus 5. Bon Iver's brilliant 22, A Million 6. Everything about Nocturnal Animals 7. Letters to Cleo's comeback 8. Spider-man's awesome cameo in Civil War 9. Amy Adams in Arrival especially the scene in which she makes "contact" 10. Westworld, a serie ...

Random Flicks Worth Checking Out This Week
Huffington Post - 3 months
What we've got here is a list of good and bad blockbusters, MOWs, B-movies, and everything in between. And they're decidedly, unabashedly random. Why not plop down on the couch and roll the dice? The Matrix Reloaded Where to find it: Netflix DVD The cast: Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss The synopsis: "Neo and the rebel leaders estimate they have 72 hours until 250,000 probes discover Zion and destroy it and its inhabitants." That's right: It's Neo and the gang vs. probes! And those probes better watch their probe backs, 'cause you-know-what's about to get real. Also, this movie's got a sweaty rave scene that's pretty much the length of an actual rave. Plus, there's like a jillion Agent Smiths at one point. Whaaaa?! Bonus: This is the Matrix flick with the flying twin rasta ghost fellows. Dreads usually look pretty dumb on white guys, but against all odds these bodacious brothers manage to pull it off quite swimmingly, thank you very much. The sunglasse ...

The 'Gravest' Detail You Totally Missed On 'Westworld'
Huffington Post - 4 months
Good luck ever having a deep and dreamless slumber after this. A lot of messed up things happen on “Westworld.” On Sunday’s episode, “Dissonance Theory,” you saw, as always, a ton of robots get shot and killed, one guy get his face blown off with a cigar and Maeve (Thandie Newton) get shot while getting her romance on. Yup. It’s messed up. But through all of that, it’s easy to miss one of the most disturbing details. On the show, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) is on a bounty hunt with William (Jimmi Simpson), and they make it to a small town. It’s the same town that the Man in Black (Ed Harris) visited in a previous episode. In the town, Dolores appears to run into the little girl that previously gave the Man in Black a clue about the park’s maze. The little girl then causes Dolores to remember things in quick flashbacks. Dolores remembers a past time when she saw the little girl and recalls being at a church. There’s one other notable thing, though: It goes by quickly, but D ...

A-Sides with Jon Chattman: #OscarsNotWhite - Hypothetical Nominations That Should've Happened Since 2000
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Will and Jada aren't going. Spike Lee will be courtside at the Knicks. Tyrese Gibson and 50 Cent want Chris Rock to step down as host of this year's Academy Awards. I get it. I really do. The #OscarsSoWhite hashtag is on-point. The voters dropped the ball last year when they failed to give a nomination to anyone of color in major categories. Ditto for this year, and years before this and last year. Having said all of this, each nominee these past two years in top categories have been deserving. It's not as if Will Smith was snubbed for Concussion in place of David Spade for Joe Dirt 2. Snubs happen. But to flip it back to the start, something clearly needs to be done. Below, I've compiled a list of nominees of color over the last 15 years that should've received nominations and even won the statue. Before you read my choices (and feel free to put yours down in the comments section below), I'll say this: anyone who is asking Rock to step down is wrong. If ever you want your voice ...

A Decade After 'Crash,' Paul Haggis Reflects On The Polarizing Racial 'Fable' That Stormed The Oscars
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
About 15 years ago, Paul Haggis was laughed out of one meeting after the next when he pitched "Crash" to television executives. He wrote it as a movie instead (with Bobby Moresco), but pre-production was shut down multiple times because the cast didn't include the right A-listers to justify financing. After it was finally made, Haggis tried, unsuccessfully, to talk Lionsgate out of a wide theatrical bow, thinking its box-office potential would wane without time to generate buzz in limited release. The movie grossed an impressive $98 million worldwide, but Haggis nonetheless tried to convince the studio that an attempted Oscar campaign would be mortifying. Then the movie won Best Picture. Ten years later, "Crash" is one of the most contentious releases of the past decade. Even though a few initial detractors saw the movie as "dramaturgical pixie dust" and characterized it as "at once tangled and threadbare," "Crash" received mostly glowing reviews and gained steady momentum as competi ...

How to Get Rid of Black Women With Kinky Hair
Huffington Post - over 2 years
The trend of integration in the natural hair movement may contribute to the erasure of kinky hair textures in the media. Cross-racial friendships, relationships and alliances are wonderful! For example,, which supports non-straight haired women of all races through product tips, testimonials and other articles, was one of the few hair blogs that interviewed me during my kickstarter campaign for my children's book that honors afro-textured hair, Sunne's Gift. Dozens of individual African-American natural hair bloggers (including Curly Nikki) either missed or ignored my repeated requests.'s diverse readership truly supported Sunne's Gift and its message of self-love and hair-acceptance. Suffice it to say that I am a grateful and avid fan. On a personal level, I'm pleased that my curly-haired Eastern European friend, Tanya, and I can read together and chat about the featured hair products. Again, cross-ra ...

Can Hollywood Push Movie Discussions Beyond Race?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Even when asked, not all actors and directors at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) are engaging with reporters on questions about red carpet designer wear or what their shots are at getting an Oscar nod. Some are delving into typically taboo subjects, including slavery, race and xenophobia. And it's about time. These are just some of the subject matters that have come to the forefront of discussions surrounding movies such as 12 Years a Slave, a based-on-fact story about a free man who gets sold into slavery, and Half of a Yellow Sun, a novel-turned-film about tribal violence during the Nigerian-Biafran War between 1967 and 1970. Yet some of the individuals who star in, or have directed, these movies are determined to push the conversation beyond yesterday's clichés. Director Steve McQueen, for one, made it clear during a moderated panel about his film, 12 Years a Slave, that this wasn't simply another project intended to ignite or spread a discussion about -- wait f ...

Comment on DirecTV Books Rogue for a Second Season by sepia830
Boom Tron - over 3 years
What kind of biased article is this? ‘Rogue’ is a great show. It’s clear that most reviewers drew their conclusions based on the first episode (which only served to set up the backstory and introduce the characters). From episode 3 forward the show just took off. Next to ’24′ it is truly the most exciting show I have ever seen. Thandie Newton and Marton Csokas have great chemistry. So glad this show was renewed. If you have DirecTV you should definitely check it out.

DirecTV Books Rogue for a Second Season
Boom Tron - over 3 years
DirecTV’s first original series, Rogue, has found itself with an extended life, which comes as no surprise to me. The crime drama has been renewed for a second season, a foregone conclusion in my mind. I just can’t imagine DirecTV cancelling its first original series, even if it performed less than acceptably. No, I’m pretty certain Rogue was going to find itself with a second season no matter what. But that inevitability shouldn’t dampen this news. A renewal is always good news, no matter the circumstances that surrounds it. Nobody is losing their jobs and there’s chance to fix any problems the first season might have had. According to Deadline, Rogue’s second season will consist of another 10 episodes, with production beginning this summer for a 2014 premiere. The series revolves around Grace Travis (Thandie Newton), a morally and emotionally conflicted undercover detective. She’s working to bring down Jimmy Laszio’s (Marton Csokas) criminal organization, but after her son is mur ...

Deepak Chopra: Reply to Chris Anderson, TED and the TED Community: We're Halfway There, But...
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Dear Chris, Thank you for clearing up some issues, particularly the confusion surrounding TEDx's decision to take down or shift the talks by Sheldrake and Hancock. Actions speak louder than words, and the talks were removed from the website, followed by your letter warning TEDx organizers essentially not to repeat the same mistake again by inviting similar talks. To underline the point, TEDx withdrew its brand name from a West Hollywood event that was by no means filled with "goofballs" or "questionable" figures. TED has invited religious leaders to speak, but that's not at issue. The "fusion of science and spirituality" that you warned against in your guidelines is the issue.  The animosity of militant atheists against consciousness studies and their stubborn defense of conservative mainstream science seem to be the background noise, at the very least, that colored your warnings. It's easy to envision that someone along the line at TED, seeing a talk entitled "The Scien ...
