What Can You Do For Your Country? Pay Taxes.
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The morning of November 22, 1963 was cold and drizzly. As a junior at TCU, I was beyond excited at the prospect of seeing President Kennedy speak in my hometown of Fort Worth. I picked up Jeanne, a fellow student, at her parents' house. It was our first date, and 47 years of marriage and four grandchildren later, it still seems like yesterday. We drove five miles, parked downtown near the Texas Hotel and made our way through the crowd as I fumbled with an umbrella. (I didn't want Jeanne to get her hair wet.) At last we got within 200 feet of the speakers' platform. It was noisy and the PA system wasn't working very well, but I can still remember the optimism I felt as the President began to speak. Although Kennedy's voice that day was muffled, when he spoke I imagined that I heard those immortal words from his inaugural speech: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Standing before me, this young, active leader, only a generation ahe ...

Okla. inmate executed for fiancee's 1986 killing
Fox News - over 4 years
An Oklahoma inmate who was convicted of the 1986 murder of his fiancee was executed Tuesday evening despite claims that he was insane and ineligible for the death penalty. Garry Thomas Allen, 56, was given a lethal injection at the state penitentiary in McAlester for fatally shooting 24-year-old Lawanna Gail Titsworth, outside an Oklahoma City day care. Allen was declared dead at 6:10 p.m., according to Jerry Massie, spokesman for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. Titsworth had moved out of the home she shared with Allen and their two sons four days before her death. Allen confronted Titsworth outside the day care and shot her twice in the chest. She ran with a center employee toward the building, but Allen pushed the worker away, shoved Titsworth down some steps and shot her twice more in the back, according to court records. A police officer responding to a 911 call tussled with Allen before shooting him in the face, according to ...

Susanne Mentzer: Singing for Two: Carrying More Than Just a Tune
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Through social media I follow former students' and colleagues' marriages, births of children, anniversaries and celebrations. I find it a great way to stay informed in the transient world of performing. I read recently of a younger colleague singing abroad who is pregnant. So many memories come to mind of my own pregnancy, especially since my son celebrated his 24th birthday last week. It is said one can have it all but not all at once. I am not certain that is true. I really made a concerted attempt to have it all. Married in 1982, we knew we wanted to have a family and although we had tried it was not happening until I learned I was pregnant while in Milan, Italy in 1988 where I was debuting with Teatro alla Scala on the opening night of their season (always Dec. 7) as Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni. Over five strenuous weeks of rehearsal I felt increasingly tired and woozy. One day in the mensa (the theater cafeteria) I was dining with the bass José van Dam who wa ...
