Tart And Honest, 'The Edge of Seventeen' Is An Increasingly Rare Must-See Teen Movie
Huffington Post - 3 months
Several years ago, Hollywood gave up on teenagers. Well, it gave up on movies that chronicle everyday teens, the ones who aren’t boy wizards or maze runners or heroes in a televised death match. The trials of high school ― once the purview of films like “Sixteen Candles” and “She’s All That” ― have been transposed to the vampires and werewolves of “Twilight.” Even “Juno” and “Easy A” feel like relics.  Not anymore. Meet Nadine Byrd, the fiery-tongued protagonist of “The Edge of Seventeen,” a coming-of-age comedy that opens this weekend. Nadine (a career-best Hailee Steinfeld) has a Julia Stiles in “10 Things I Hate About You” quality, with a bit of Thora Birch in “Ghost World” for good measure. In other words, the world hates her, can’t understand her ― or so she’s convinced. But “The Edge of Seventeen” pushes past the brooding-girl-finds-peace trope: Like many teenagers, Nadine hates herself most of all, even if she projects that strife onto her snotty classmates. Every ill-worde ...

This year we are fighting back. #TakeHerHoodie pic.twitter.com/PRUL0Gk59D — #TakeHerHoodie Ⓥ (@YoungAdolf_) September 29, 2016 “Ladies, we’ve had enough. You can’t just take our hoodies this year without giving them back,” the 21-year-old, who lives in Texas, wrote on Twitter. “This year we are fighting back.” Muofhe, who’s fallen victim to hoodie-stealing himself, said that guys have been left “cold and hoodie-less” in the past. With the weather getting chillier, it was time to take a stand, he told Indy100.  So with hoodie season in full swing, vengefu ...

'Deep Throat': How The Controversial Linda Lovelace Movie Changed Culture
Moviefone Blog - over 4 years
Four decades after the pornographic film "Deep Throat," we need not one, but two biopics on the star of the movie, Linda Lovelace. (The first stars Amanda Seyfried. The other which may never happen -- stars Malin Akerman.) These dueling projects are just one measure of how big a deal "Deep Throat" remains 40 years after it went into wide release, on June 30, 1972. Other measures include the multi-billions in profits earned each year by a porn-film production industry that scarcely existed before "Deep Throat," the level of household-name fame the film's title earned amid the Watergate scandal, the countless courtroom challenges over whether porn merits First Amendment protections, and the still-ongoing debate over whether porn is good or bad for women -- a debate embodied by the life story of Lovelace herself, still the most famous/infamous porn star who ever lived. And then there's the snickering or prickly reaction you had upon reading the phrase "Deep Throat" a few moments ago. Y ...

The film itself went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. As Birch was 16 at the time she made it, and thus classified as a minor in the United States, her parents had to approve her brief topless scene in the film. They and child labor representatives were on the set for the shooting of the scene. After supporting roles in The Smokers (2000), where Birch was called "a scene-stealer" by The Hollywood Reporter, and Dungeons & Dragons (2000), she landed the lead role alongside Keira Knightley in the horror film The Hole (2001). The film was released in theaters in the UK, and went direct-to-video in the US almost two years later and gained divided reviews.
