Whose Family Isn't Crazy?
The Huffington Post - about 1 year
It's the time of year for making lists--and especially, it seems, list after list full of tips on how to deal with your crazy family, if the deluge of content on the subject (a mere week or so into the season) is to be believed. In a recent post titled "10 Ways to Handle Your Wild, Crazy Family This Holiday Season," the editors at Jezebel suggest things like avoiding topics you know will start a fight, engaging in family members' hobbies, and "not petting them backwards," noting that, "It feels weird to them. They don't like it." Charisma magazine suggests skipping the adults' and kids' tables and instead "scattering chairs and TV trays through every room of your house so that each person can dine in silence and solitude." Buzzfeed, meanwhile, offers up "14 Ways To Get Through Tense Holiday Family Time Like a Pro" by suggesting readers adjust their expectations, make a plan for responding to triggers, and resist the temptation to self-medicate--all of which are generally easier said tha ...

5 Ways to Maximize Your 'Time ROI'
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Having freedom of time is a big reason we became entrepreneurs. We want to spend our hours doing what we love to do professionally, while also having enough time away from the business to pursue our other passions. Unfortunately, we usually end up working "half time" -- meaning 12 hours a day instead of the entire 24. The good news: We can take back our time-crunched lives and enjoy the time freedom we desperately crave. So says Elizabeth Saunders -- time investment expert, founder of Real Life E Time Coaching & Training, and author of How to Invest Your Time Like Money. Here are five of Saunders' top strategies for gaining control of your limited time and leveraging it for maximum impact on your business and your life. 1. Take an ownership mindset with your time. So often we give up our control over time and make our business a much worse boss than we would ever work for in the corporate world. The solution is to view time as something you own rather than someth ...

LinkedIn Now Offering Employees 'Unlimited' Vacation Time
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Like all-you-can-eat shrimp or the right to consume candy and ice cream all day because your parents can’t stop you anymore, unlimited vacation time isn't quite as fabulous as you might think. LinkedIn is the latest employer to offer what's known as "discretionary time off," or "DTO" in corporate HR-speak. Starting on Nov. 1, the job networking site’s approximately 6,000 U.S. employees will be able to take as much time off as they want every year. Sort of. “The purpose is to empower managers and employees,” Pat Wadors, LinkedIn’s chief human resource officer, told The Huffington Post. Employees are adults who don’t need to be micromanaged or wait to accrue vacation days after a designated period, she said. But there are limits to the new policy. Workers can’t create an alternative work schedule, such as three-day weeks. They can’t take six months off. “That’s a leave of absence, not a vacation,” Wadors said. Employees need to work out their days off with their managers. ...

<em>About Time</em>: The Movie That Taught Me Worrying Is a Waste of Time
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Last night, HuffPost hosted a special screening for the movie About Time -- a touching story that is quite literally about time. The director of the film, Richard Curtis (known for Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral) says this is his most personal work to date. The story uses time travel to take us on an emotional journey and pose an important question: How do you make the most of life? Making the most of life is a topic we're very focused on at HuffPost as part of our Third Metric initiative. The Third Metric is about redefining success beyond money and power to include things like well-being, wisdom, wonder, compassion and giving. As Arianna Huffington says, there is something in the Zeitgeist right now -- people are looking for fulfillment beyond money and power. About Time taps into this burgeoning movement by highlighting the unhealthy ways we sometimes manage our own time. As I watched this movie, I realized just how much time I spend (or waste) worrying about thing ...

'Inside Llewyn Davis,' 'About Time,' And Three Other Movies From The New York Film Festival
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The 51st New York Film Festival is in full swing with an impressive lineup of highly anticipated features, including "Captain Phillips," which opened the festival, and the upcoming debuts of Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Spike Jonze's Her. Here, we present a round-up of what we've already seen, which includes the aforementioned Captain Phillips, the Joel and Ethan Coen film Inside Llewyn Davis, and Richard Curtis' About Time. So, yes, why don't we get on with it already and round them up in a handy capsule format, just for you ... About Time It's remarkable that Rachel McAdams ever agreed to do this movie. I picture her getting the script from her agent and thinking it was a practical joke. "Oh, a time-travel movie. I get it: The Time Traveler's Wife was bad. Ha ha. You got me." Or perhaps it's on McAdams' bucket list to be in a good time-travel movie. (Or, most likely, she wanted to work with Richard Curtis.) About Time is the story of Tim Lake (Dom ...

Man's Response To Stolen Package Is The Absolute Best
Huffington Post - over 3 years
If you stole an Amazon package K-Cup coffee pods from Tim Lake, you aren't getting away with it -- at least, not without being mocked relentlessly. Friday afternoon, a security camera at the 29-year-old's Arcadia, Ariz. home captured an unidentified woman waltzing into his yard and making off with the package. Lake learned about the incident later that night, and got to work making up a flyer that he hoped would help catch the perp. The flyer, which notes that the culprit "is either a woman or Dog The Bounty Hunter has really let himself go," lists the package snatcher's nationality as "Un-American," her distinguishing marks as a "shameful and super awkward running style" and her weight as "600 pounds." Lake told HuffPost Weird News that he "actually felt kind of bad about the weight comment," but added, "then I figured if you steal from me, I have the right to make fun of you." So far, he hasn't received any helpful tips, but says that his neighbors have been ...

No Time Like the Present
The Huffington Post - about 4 years
Life is unfair. Life is fragile. Life is short. How many times have you heard those phrases? How many times has something happened in your life that has confirmed them? And how many times after incidents of sorrow were you determined to have a more in-the-moment life -- only to forget this new philosophy in less than a week? I'm having a moment like that right now. ADHD: There’s No Time Like The Future
Psych Central - over 4 years
There's never enough time! Well, it’s been more than a week since I discussed the relationship between ADHD and time. How did that happen? Okay, you’re right, I should apologize … but I’m not going to. Yes, I know that the first two posts last week discussed this very relationship, but last week was also last month. (I know that’s a bit of a reach, but I really want to write this post.  Impulsive of me, wouldn’t you say?) On Monday, July 23rd I said: “It’s the same part of my mind that still wonders what I should be when I grow up.” On Wednesday, July 25th I said: “I don’t worry about whether my time is running short.” And now I get to tell you why I don’t worry about whether my time is running short. Better still, I get to tell that I actually don’t need to wonder what I should be when I grow up … because I’ve decided. No cliffhangers That’s right, I know what I’m going to do when I grow up, I even know what I’m going to do before I grow up – I’m going to do … EVERYTHIN ...
