Michael Barrie: Mickey Rose (1935-2013)
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
A long time ago in a New York far, far away, I landed a job writing for the "Tonight Show." I was twenty-two. I got there by the usual route. I'd given a few pages of jokes to my father, who had given them to his barber. When another of the barber's customers, an unsuspecting Ed McMahon, came in and was suitably seated and smocked, the material was dropped in his lap. Up to this point, I'd been writing jokes for Joan Rivers for a couple of months. She paid me seven dollars for each one she liked. Thirty-five dollars was a great week. Prior to that, my main qualification for writing comedy was passing really hysterical notes to my friend Kenny Sass in study hall. I was shown to my new office. It was down the hall, past the security window, past the elevators, and down another hallway. It was nowhere near the humming cluster of "Tonight Show" offices. It wasn't even an office. Without windows, without a desk, it was chilled to the temperature of the frozen foods ...

Richard Z. Chesnoff: From Northwestern to Broadway; The Waa-Mu Show at 54 Below
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Back in the late '70s-early '80s it's where you went to be seen playing naughty with the likes of Andy Warhol, Liza Minnelli, Calvin Klein and host Steve Rubell. The extravagantly wild "Studio 54" is long gone. Its gigantic ground floor space has become the soberly enjoyable Roundabout Theatre. But it's sprawling East 54th Street basement now boasts a new New York landmark: one of the theater district's only surviving cabarets, the ever lively "54 Below". There's where you can drink and dine while delighting in the showcase talents of some of the entertainment world's best singers and musicians: Marilyn Maye, Adam Gwon, Barbara Cook, etc. From time to time, 54 Belowers can also enjoy a delightful introduction to some of Broadway's newest talent - up and coming youngsters whose wide eyes shine bright with hopes of transforming passion into profession. Last week's those 54 Below spotlights were on Northwestern University Songwriters' Showcase, a cleve ...

Annie Hall: Best Lines From Woody Allen's Classic That Weren't Said By Woody Allen (Or Diane Keaton)
Moviefone Blog - almost 5 years
"Annie Hall," Woody Allen's best known (and probably best best) film, was released 35 years ago, on April 20, 1977. The Best Picture winner -- about a romance between a neurotic New Yorker (Allen) and his tie-wearing, Wisconsin-born love (Diane Keaton) -- was a cultural sensation upon its release, and still resonates to this day. Seriously: you can't swing an old-school tennis racket on the streets of New York without hitting some girl or guy who based their entire persona on "Annie Hall." To celebrate "Annie Hall's" 35th anniversary, HuffPost Entertainment has compiled a list of the best lines from the film not said by Allen's Alvy Singer or Keaton's titular heroine. After all, no one needs another round-up of "Annie's" best moments. (Spoiler alert: it's all of them! The thing's an unparalleled classic, y'all.) La-di-da, etc. 9. "Yeah, I do. It's for my girlfriend. Make it out to Ralph." - Autograph seeker 8. "He was all schoolyard. They threw him a football once, he tried to d ...
