Starz's 'Boss' back for 2nd season
San Francisco Chronicle - over 4 years
Starz's 'Boss' back for 2nd season Last year, Kelsey Grammer proved he was much more than a master of fussy comic timing when he burst upon the TV screen as magnificently flawed Chicago Mayor Tom Kane, a Machiavellian urban monarch who is struggling mightily to keep both his fractured political machine and even more broken family intact against mounting challenges, including his diagnosis of an incurable neurological disease known as Lewy body dementia. Kane's other "family" at City Hall last season included his coolly efficient personal aide, Kitty O'Neill (Kathleen Robertson), who was not only having an affair with the seemingly clean-cut, good-guy state treasurer, the very married Ben Zajac (Jeff Hephner), now running for governor, but who had just enough conscience left last season to cause her to self-destruct and flee from the Kane machine. Sustained panicMeanwhile, the clock is ticking on Kane's life and career and he is in a sustained panic which he stru ...

Despite new film role, Jane Fonda says she was 'never a hippie'
LATimes - over 4 years
Now 74 and in her self-described “third act,” Jane Fonda is clear-eyed, focused, fit, relaxed — and busier than ever. Her new film, “Peace, Love & Misunderstanding,” opens Friday in limited release, with Fonda playing an aging Woodstock hippie named Grace. Directed by Bruce Beresford (“Driving Miss Daisy”), the movie revolves around Grace, who is thrilled when her conservative attorney daughter Diane (Catherine Keener), whom she hasn’t seen in 20 years, arrives at her doorstep with her two teenage children. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays Jude, a local musician who had an affair with Grace and then falls in love with Diane. Next, Fonda will be appearing in a recurring role in Aaron Sorkin’s new TV series, “The Newsroom,” which premieres June 24 on HBO. Jeff Daniels stars in the series as a news anchor at a fictional Atlanta cable station. Fonda plays the mogul who runs the conglomerate (an interesting turn, considering Fonda was previously married to Ted Turner, founder of Atlanta- ...

From 'Boss' to 'Glee,' Do Any of This Season's TV Shows Get Politics Right?
The Atlantic - over 5 years
A number of old series have delved into campaigning this fall, as has Kelsey Grammer's new drama. Only occasionally do they rise above broad parody, though. NBC/Starz/Fox Perhaps to brace us for what promises to be an exceptionally brutal 2012 presidential election, scripted television has taken on politics in a major way this fall. Campaigns are everywhere on TV, from established sitcoms (Glee, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation) to newcomer prestige dramas (Boss). And while D.C. often gets dismissed as Hollywood's homely cross-continental cousin, in a way, it's not surprising when campaigning shows up in pop culture: The subject, with its sex scandals, brave stands, and backroom deals, is plenty entertaining. "Politics is sort of the mainstay of theatrical behavior in our contemporary culture," says Kelsey Grammer, who makes a break with his comedic past (Fraiser and Cheers) in a striking performance as Chicago Mayor Tom Kane in Starz's Boss. "You don't really need to blame that ...
