Growing Up With Jewel
Huffington Post - over 1 year
“This was a gradual steel frost / That started with cold feet / And ended with numb hearts,” the artist known as Jewel sings in a sad whisper. The lyrics were recorded for a song on her newest album, “Picking Up the Pieces,” out last month. In this particular song, “His Pleasure Is My Pain,” she tells the story of a souring relationship -- a man indifferent to his partner’s sensitive disposition. On paper, without the smooth edges of the singer’s soft crooning, the words seem a little maudlin, or maybe just fitting for a singer-songwriter who’s just endured a divorce -- which Jewel did, last year. But the song wasn’t written about her reportedly amicable split from her husband of six years, Ty Murray -- it was written when she was 17, homeless and scouring for food.  “I wasn’t in a relationship when I wrote a lot of those songs, when I was young. I was just imagining,” Jewel said in an interview with The Huffington Post. Revisiting them decades later, she added, was “kind ...

Jewel: "I Love J. Lo's Body" But "I Will Never Have Her Little Waist or Her Abs"
US Magazine - almost 4 years
When Jewel first found fame in the mid-'90s, the singer/songwriter was devastated when her body was mocked in the press. "I was heavier when I got into the business, and I remember getting written up as the 'chubby Renee Zellweger,'" the 38-year-old says in the May issue of Health. PHOTOS: Stars' favorite workout spots Jewel continues, "I was either going to turn to bulimia, which most of the other girls that I was around were doing, or to diet pills, which most of the celebrities I knew were doing. Or I was going to do it the right way, because that's the only way that will last. That attitude helped save my health in the long run." PHOTOS: Hollywood's hottest bodies These days, the "You Were Meant for Me" singer stays healthy by eating organic foods. "I try to follow a 'biblical diet,' which has nothing to do with religion, but with eating things as they originally came out of the ground, before there was genetic altering of food," says Jewel, mom to son Kase, 21 months, ...

Jeryl Brunner: Jewel on Motherhood (And Yodeling to Her Baby Son)
Huffington Post - over 4 years
In her new children's book, That's What I'd Do, Jewel writes: If I were a mirror, that would suit me, too. Cause I could spend all my time looking back at you. Cause you are a treasure better than gold. And best of all you are the kind that I can hold. In fact, that's just a few of the book's many poetic lines. That's What I'd Do is based on a lullaby that Jewel wrote when she was pregnant with her son Kase. She saw the song as a love letter to her baby who was born in July, 2011. Credit: Alex Tehrani (for Pampers) Jewel continues to celebrate the profound joy of motherhood and share her thoughts and love. So it was fitting for her to help kick off Pampers' Millions of Beautiful Morning Moments Sweepstakes on Facebook, where for 30 days people can win all kinds of prizes and are encouraged to upload a photo to the Pampers Facebook wall. In fact, to help ignite the launch, Jewel sang and played guitar and also read That's What I'd Do from her ranch in Texas ...

Jewel's New Song Raises Funds For Reconstruction For Breast Cancer Survivors
Huffington Post - over 4 years
NEW ORLEANS -- Singer-songwriter Jewel has penned numerous lyrics empowering women after heartbreak and loss, and now she hopes to do the same for breast cancer survivors. Jewel's latest song, "Flower," was written to raise awareness about the importance of breast reconstruction options for breast cancer survivors. The singer is heading to New Orleans next month to perform "Flower" and other hits at a benefit concert for the cause. "Reconstruction is a huge part of the healing process," Jewel told The Associated Press. "It's not just vanity. It's a part of what makes us women. It's a part of our identity as women. Patients should at least be informed about their options." Jewel said she originally wrote "Flower" years ago as a relationship-based song. It was never released, but it was about empowering women. "The chorus in that song kept coming back to me, and I thought it was so fitting for this cause, so I rewrote the lyrics for these women," she said. ...
