Michael Bialas: Festival Musicians Describe the Ride of Their Lives (Part 3 of a Series)
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Tucked in the southwest corner of Colorado like a hidden jewel you're determined to find, Telluride is a sparkling diamond of a town that lures adventurers from all over the world. It's not easy to reach, with the closest interstate exit some 125 miles away in Grand Junction. Yet it's certainly worth the trip, as many skiers, bikers, fly fishermen and festivarians have found out. Aspen and Vail are trendy, but Telluride is the place to be, whether it's to watch movies, musicians or the majestic beauty. Tyler James of Escondido, one of the lucky bands set to appear at the second annual Ride Festival this weekend (July 12-14), calls it "heaven." He first visited in 2010 as a keyboardist with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, who were on the bill at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Among their admirers there were a little British folk-rock band called Mumford & Sons, who now make adoring audiences feel like they're witnessing a religious experience. Play ...

$1M bail for man accused in baby-freezer case
Fox News - almost 4 years
Bail has been set at $1 million for a 25-year-old Washington man accused of putting his 6-week-old daughter in a freezer for about an hour to stop her crying. Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist says doctors believe the baby will survive but it's too soon to know potential complications. Tyler James Deutsch pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of child assault, criminal mistreatment and interfering with reporting of domestic violence. The prosecutor says Deutsch fell asleep after putting the child in the freezer Saturday, then awoke and was removing the baby when the child's mother returned. He's accused of taking the phone away when the mother tried to call for help from their trailer in Roy, Wash. The mother took the child and got neighbors to call police. Prosecutors say the child's core temperature fell to 84 degrees in the 10-degree freezer. She also had a broken arm and leg and a head injury.

Tyler James Hoare's mudflat sculptures endure
San Francisco Chronicle - over 4 years
Tyler James Hoare's mudflat sculptures endure The driftwood sculptures in Emeryville weathered the winds, waves and shifting tides, but they couldn't survive the Man. For the past 15 years, he has continued to place sculptures on wooden posts emerging from the water near Interstate 80. "To me, it's part man, part machine," says Hoare, pointing to legs emerging near the landing gear. For generations of young Bay Area residents riding along Interstate 80 in a family station wagon or sedan, it was an early lesson in art appreciation. Hoare also built a submarine and Chinese junks and continues to create "post people" - eerie statues made from debris that he gathered on the shore. Hoare admired the other mudflat sculpture artists, including many college students, who used driftwood to make trains, a sphinx, sea monsters and a variety of political statements. When Caltrans and other agencies declared the sculpture builders' foot traffic and building materials a t ...

No Breaks for Rossmoor Home Invasion Robbery Suspect
Los Alamitos-Seal Beach Patch - almost 5 years
On his 16th try, the man suspected of December’s home-invasion robbery of a 90-year-old Rossmoor woman was able to get his request for a bail reduction heard by a judge today, but that is where his luck ran out. Tyler James Compton, 23, of Long Beach remains in custody at the Orange County jail, unable to meet his $200,000 bail. He did, however, get a quick trial date for June 7. Compton had been seeking a bail reduction since his Dec. 9 arrest, but his bail review hearing came and went 15 times only to be continued each time. Compton was arrested in December after an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy recognized him from a sketch artist’s drawing of the robbery suspect. After the sketch was released, the deputy thought it resembled the suspect in a case in Sunset Beach, said Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino, adding that the man has a history of narcotics charges. The victim "gave a very good description,'' added Amormino. "Her details were very explicit . ...
