Sandra Bernhard Does 'Sandyland'
Huffington Post - about 3 years
It is said that well-behaved women don't change the world. Words to live by, and no one lives them better on stage than Sandra Bernhard. Uniquely poised in the performance art world, her art comes seemingly from being her full, uncensored self: a witty, smart, no holds barred, says what is on her mind, take no prisoners self. Love it or hate it, Sandra Bernhard speaks her truth on the world. This sort of freedom is enviable and I asked Sandra in a phone interview where it comes from. "You either have it or don't. If you have it, then it is what you are allowed to do with it that is important. My parents were taken aback when they had me, but they let me do what I wanted. I have three older brothers. As the only girl, I was off-the-cuff, kooky, cute. I was lucky. I think you are at your best when allowed to be yourself. No direction for your personality is the best way to go." At a time when so much pop culture is recycled, inauthentic and derivative, with Ms. Bernhard and her one wo ...

Review: Not your usual geeks in 'Secret Lives of Dorks'
LATimes - over 3 years
A familiar outline takes some clever and funny turns in this big-hearted coming-of-age romance. The setup of "The Secret Lives of Dorks" may be familiar: Comic-book geek Payton (Gaelan Connell) is in love with cheerleader Carrie (Riley Voelkel), who already has a jock boyfriend, Clark (Beau Mirchoff), while fellow nerd Samantha (Vanessa Marano) pines for Payton. But from there, Johnny Severin and Nicholas David Brandt's otherwise clever and original script takes an unexpected turn at nearly every intersection, resulting in a funny and big-hearted coming-of-age romance.

Switched at Birth's Vanessa Marano Lands the Role of a Lifetime Seattle Post-Intelligencer Copyright 2013 Seattle Post-Intelligencer. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Published 6:43 am, Friday, March 8, 2013 Tweens know her from ABC Family's Switched at Birth, but Vanessa Marano is taking on a more sexually charged project in Lifetime's latest movie, Restless Virgins (Saturday at 8/7c). Based on the best-selling book of the same title, the flick features a prep school's sex scandal that made national headlines. Marano, who stars in the true story as a vengeful student, opened up about her racy role. Does starring in a Lifetime movie feel like a right of passage as an actress? Who doesn't love a Lifetime movie? I think that they know their audience so well. Speaking of the audience, do you think Restless Virgins will attract younger viewers than the typical Lifetime demograp ...

“Switched at Birth” pumps down the volume
Salon.com - almost 4 years
“Switched at Birth,” the ABC Family series about two teen girls who were switched at birth, aired an episode almost entirely in American Sign Language last night. It was fantastic.  If you have never watched "Switched at Birth" and want to zone out now, please know that I’ve read about “Switched at Birth” and I’ve seen a few episodes, but I have not seen very many episodes — and that didn’t matter at all. Here’s the necessary background: “Switched at Birth” stars Daphne (Katie LeClerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano), the two eponymous teenagers. Daphne is deaf and Bay is not, but since they have gotten to know each other, their families have become entangled — Daphne and her working-class single mother (Bay’s biological mother) now live in Bay's much richer family's guest-house — and Bay now attends Daphne’s school, Carlton, a school for the deaf, as part of a pilot program for hearing kids. The school board has recently decided to close Carlton. The students, taking inspiration from the 19 ...

'Switched at Birth' goes silent to make a point
Fox News - almost 4 years
"Until hearing people walk a day in our shoes, they will never understand," says a guidance counselor at a high school for deaf students in "Switched at Birth." Such insights are a staple of the ABC Family drama, a TV rarity that puts deaf characters, played by deaf or hard-of-hearing actors, at the center of the action. But Monday's episode takes it a bold step further: Save for a few spoken words at the beginning and the end, it is silent. The actors' hands do the talking with American Sign Language, even rapping together in one gleeful sequence. Subtitles, which are typically sprinkled throughout "Switched at Birth" episodes, keep the viewer clued in. But when a deaf character is confused because she can't hear something vital, the audience is too. It's powerfully disconcerting. The cast, including Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin as the school counselor, are excited about what they see as a grand experiment and eager for viewer ...

'Switched At Birth' Makes TV History
Huffington Post - about 4 years
"Switched At Birth" will air an episode told entirely in American Sign Language (ASL) on Monday, March 4 at 8 p.m. on ABC Family. In the episode, the students at Carlton School for the Deaf protest to keep their school open. Daphne (Katie Leclerc) leads the student protest and arranges a demonstration to take place the night before their production of "Romeo and Juliet," in which she stars. Meanwhile, Bay (Vanessa Marano), one of the few hearing students in the school, is challenged when she tries to join the cause. This is the first time a scripted series on mainstream television has done this, according to the network. The episode was inspired by the real-life protests at Gallaudet University that took place 25 years ago. Students, staff, faculty and alumni demanded a deaf president bet elected after another hearing president of the university was selected in 1988. Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, Sean Berdy and Gilles Marini also star in ...

'Grey's Anatomy' Fan Columnist: Never Let Me Go
Buddy TV - almost 5 years
From time to time Grey's Anatomy does a Very Special Episode with widely varying results.  Sometimes the outcome is spectacular (think code black and pink mist or the shooter in the hospital) and other times it's awful (three words: ferry boat debacle). Luckily, "The Girl With No Name" was a solid outing, taking it's "ripped from the headlines" premise and somehow making it work. Guest star Vanessa Marano did stellar work as Holly, a young woman who had been kidnapped at age six only to finally escape her captor years later having suffered beatings, torture, and sexual assault. Unable to connect with her heartbroken parents, the young girl imprinted on Meredith and as she slowly began to recover her storyline had repercussions (as per usual) for many of the doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West. Finding My Way Back Home In the wake of Cristina's abortion, Owen's cheating, and all of the emotional upheaval in between, Doctors Yang and Hunt find themselves in an awkward place. Early in th ...

Vanessa Marano Visits Grey’s Anatomy
Boom Tron - almost 5 years
Switched at Birth star <a class="fplink fp-275413" href="/Vanessa+Marano+1">Vanessa Marano</a> is checking into Seattle Grace hospital as a guest star in an upcoming episode of Grey’s Anatomy. She’s been making quite the name for herself as Bay Kennish on Switched, which airs on ABC Family, yet is still willing to put some time into appearing on other shows. She’ll film her guest spot during the three-week production hiatus Switched at Birth will be on. Any ideas who Marano will be playing when she appears on Grey’s? It turns out the details behind Marano’s role are being kept under lock and key according to THR, leaving me to believe she’ll have a larger importance to the rest of the season than is usually given to a guest star. All we do know is she will be in Episode 20, which is airing in late April. Everything else is completely up for speculation, and as always I highly encourage speculation. Let your mind go to strange, dark places to come up with the most abstract of conc ...

Switched at Birth’s Vanessa Marano Interview
Beleb Dirty Laundry - about 5 years
Switched at Birth is back baby! Things are going to get even more complicated for Bay and Daphne and their families, I have it on good authority that fans haven’t seen anything yet. The other day I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in a Q&amp;A interview session with <a class="fplink fp-275413" href="/vanessa+marano">Vanessa Marano</a>, who plays Bay, tough on the outside but girl with a big heart. I personally have been a fan of Vanessa’s since she played April on one of my all time favorite shows Gilmore Girls. Vanessa was a delight to talk to. Not only was she open but you could tell she was genuinely glad to be there and answer questions. She talked about what is in store for her alter ego in this second half of season one. Bay’s street art almost costs her something really important to her, so she will struggle with whether or not to give up her street art. As you know street art is a big part of who Bay is, so if she gives it up she will be losing a huge pa ...
