Huffington Post - 4 months
Wentworth Miller is here to remind anyone experiencing a mental health issue that they’re not facing it by themselves. The “Prison Break” actor was recently named a celebrity ambassador for Active Minds, a United States-based mental health advocacy group. He hopes his public advocacy will make others dealing with psychological conditions feel a little less isolated. “As someone who knows what it’s like to struggle with depression, I want to help give voice to the many people living with mental health issues,” he said in a statement. “I want to help assure them that they’re not alone ... letting people know that it’s okay to ask for help is extremely important.” Active Minds, which primarily focuses on spreading positive messages about mental health in high schools and colleges, will feature Miller as their keynote speaker at their national conference later this year. He will also educate students about suicide prevention by being involved with the organization’s programs acr ...

This Heartbreaking Video Shows What It's Like To Live With Depression
Huffington Post - 5 months
Depression is notorious for making those who suffer from it think very little of themselves. “Nobody cares about me,” “I’ve failed everyone” and “I’m worthless” are likely part of a depressed person’s daily inner dialogue. Additionally, the mental health disorder leads to poor sleep, loss of motivation and tearfulness (not to mention it comes with crippling physical symptoms, too.) In other words, it’s all-consuming. In the video above, The Mighty breaks down many of the thoughts that race through a depressed mind. The PSA also features actor Wentworth Miller, who recently opened up about his own experience with depression. The most important takeaway? You’re not alone. So many people understand what you’re going through.  If you or someone you know needs help, call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Outside of the U.S., please visit the International Association for Suicide Prevention for a database of resources. -- This feed and i ...

Why I Declined Russia's Invitation to Talk About My 3D-Printed Dress at the Open Innovations Forum in Moscow
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Recently I had the unique pleasure of designing a 3D-printed gown for burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese: Photo by Albert Sanchez To my own astonishment, press regarding this one-of-a-kind gown has reached hundreds of millions of people around the world. That response has led to a number of invitations for speaking engagements relating to the promise of 3D printing and its potential for the fashion industry. However, nothing prepared me for a request by the Russian government to give a presentation at their recent Open Innovations Forum, a massive international technology summit in Moscow. I was asked to speak alongside many global corporate and political leaders, including Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. Unfortunately, Russia's recent enactment of anti-gay laws prohibiting "homosexual propaganda" poses an obvious conflict for me as a gay man. These laws are directly responsible for a horrific escalation in violence against LGBT Russians, including hate crimes, impris ...

Guccio | Creative Commons Today (September 10, 2013), the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) is sponsoring World Suicide Prevention Day. The USC School of Social Work is sponsoring a Suicide Awareness Blog Carnival to commemorate this day of suicide awareness. I’ve written past suicide-related posts about celebrities as well as suicide warning signs and suicide prevention and awareness, but today I’d like to shine a light on one of the most recent actors to come out about suicide (pun intended). On August 21, 2013, former Prison Break star Wentworth Miller publicly came out as a gay man in an open letter to the organizers of the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in Russia. Miller thanked the festival’s director for the invitation but asserted that in light of Russia’s current stance on homosexuality, he “cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denie ...

Miller wrote the screenplay for the film Stoker, as well as a prequel to Stoker, Uncle Charlie. He used the pseudonym Ted Foulke, later explaining, "I just wanted the scripts to sink or swim on their own." Miller's script was voted to the 2010 "Black List" of the 10 best unproduced screenplays then making the rounds in Hollywood. The film is about a teenage girl who must deal with a mysterious uncle following the death of her father. Miller described it as a "horror film, a family drama and a psychological thriller".
