10 Forgotten Books And Their Surprising Claims To Fame
Huffington Post - 2 months
By day, I'm a lecturer in English at Loughborough University in the UK. By night, I'm a literary blogger, whose website Interesting Literature: A Library of Literary Interestingness has now become a book. The Secret Library: A Book-Lovers' Journey Through Curiosities of History (Michael O'Mara Books) is a whistle-stop tour of 3,000 years of Western history, told through civilisation's most emblematic invention: the book. It considers all sorts of books: novels, plays, memoirs, diaries, cookbooks, joke books, travel books, and sports almanacs. Here are ten of the most obscure books I discovered locked away in Western history's secret library, and the reasons we should know more about them. Pigres, Batrachomyomachia. Homer's Iliad is the first great epic of Western literature, and was probably composed in the eighth century BCE. But what was the first mock-epic? The comic poem Batrachomyomachia ('Battle of Frogs and Mice'), which is tentatively attributed to a poet named Pigres, overtu ...

Pharma Cos. And Celebrities Flood DNC Festivities
Huffington Post - 4 months
by Ashley Balcerzak and Emma Baccellieri Fergie performed after the DNC at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia for a VIP crowd. (Ashley Balcerzak/OpenSecrets) The klieg lights were on full-strength Wednesday at a star-studded lunch highlighting obesity treatment and, later, a Fergie concert, both put on by the Creative Coalition -- with help from pharma giants like Novo Nordisk -- on the third day of the Democratic National Convention. "I think you couple the artistry with celebrity to create a commodity and currency that has tremendous value to raising awareness and advancing the agenda of whatever cause we are backing at that time," said actor William Baldwin, the former president of the Creative Coalition, an entertainment industry advocacy group that focuses on social issues as well as those affecting its members. And the celebrities certainly turned out in force for both events, including actress Ashley Judd, Reid Scott of Veep, Diane Guerrero of Orange is the New ...

Wealth managers say they hear 'nary a tweet' for Twitter's IPO
Yahoo News - about 3 years
By Lauren Young NEW YORK (Reuters) - Twitter Inc has set a relatively modest price range for its closely watched initial public offering, but some financial advisers say their clients are not clamoring to invest in the social media phenomenon. "Nary a tweet," says William Baldwin, president of Pillar Financial Advisors in Waltham, Massachusetts, when asked about client interest in the deal. Out of 29 broker-dealers and independent advisers contacted by Reuters, 23 said they are not recommending Twitter shares. Only one said he would recommend it - and only to certain clients. ...

Stephen Baldwin Owes $300K
Huffington Post - over 3 years
NEW CITY, N.Y. — Stephen Baldwin, the youngest of four brothers in show business, said Friday he's looking forward to "clearing the wreckage of my past." Step 1 will be coming up with $300,000 for the tax man. Baldwin, 46, admitted in Rockland County Court that he failed to pay New York state income taxes for 2008, 2009 and 2010. Under a plea bargain, he gets to stay out of jail – so he can make some money – and can have his record wiped clean if he pays the taxes within a year. His total bill in taxes, interest and penalties is $400,000, but state Supreme Court Justice Charles Apotheker said $100,000 had already been paid. Baldwin, currently appearing on "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice," said he never intended to avoid paying taxes and got in trouble by trusting others. "Unfortunately, I got some really bad suggestions and advice ... from lawyers and accountants," he said outside court. Baldwin, who lives in Upper Grandview, said he believes he can mee ...

Ben Lerner: Gossip Girl: Why It's Time for the Final XOXO
Huffington Post - about 4 years
When The CW's teen drama Gossip Girl leapt onto television screens in 2007, it served the purpose indicated by its title. Simply put, it made millions of girls gossip. The chief, but not sole, demographic was high school females, who buzzed about the "scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite." The program, based on a Cecily von Ziegesar's bestselling book series of the same name, revolved around the privileged prep school students on the Upper East Side, and the titular character -- an omniscient, anonymous blogger who chronicles their very public lives. The show's stars -- notably Blake Lively -- skyrocketed to fame. Now in its sixth and final season, Gossip Girl has, most would admit, fallen from grace. While it was never a lauded Emmy-winning series, even devoted fans note the superiority of the scandal depicted in the first two seasons, when the characters were in their final years of private high school. Although it was never rooted in reality or accessibility, the eye-ro ...

Mark Yzaguirre: A False Dichotomy
Huffington Post - about 4 years
William Baldwin recently posted a piece at Forbes entitled "Do You Live in a Death Spiral State?", in which he discussed investment strategies based on state fiscal policies. While his article makes some good points about the problems that an overextended public sector can create for investment in particular states and he provides some decent investment advice, Baldwin uses a simplistic and in many ways insulting method for determining whether a given state is in a "death spiral". As he puts it: Two factors determine whether a state makes this elite list of fiscal hellholes. The first is whether it has more takers than makers. A taker is someone who draws money from the government, as an employee, pensioner or welfare recipient. A maker is someone gainfully employed in the private sector. The first problem with Baldwin's argument is one of basic terminology. Describing the two types of people in America as makers and takers is frankly an exercise in bad faith. Let's ...
