Movie Review: Dirty Grandpa... Don't Walk Out!
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Oh, my! Why is De Niro working so much and choosing mediocrity like Dirty Grandpa? At times he is wildly funny in a film that has moments of greatness surrounded by banal attempts to get laughs. The beginning of the film is a set up and tedious in its struggle to be outrageous. The concept of an old man wanting to "get laid" and go out with a bang before the bell tolls, is a funny one. But what happened to the execution? The plot is as follows: De Niro's grandson, Zac Efron, is about to marry an uptight socially conscious Julianne Hough. Dick Kelly (De Niro) whose wife just has died, is opposed to the wedding and creates a diversion by asking Jason (Zac Efron) to drive him to Florida to visit an old friend Stinky, (Danny Glover). About twenty minutes into this film, Stinky who is attached to an IV while watching porno films in a nursing home, gives a shot of energy that has been lacking. Glover is wickedly funny and lights up the screen in too small a part. Up to this momen ...

'Vampire Academy': A Live Blog
Huffington Post - about 3 years
“Vampire Academy,” a new movie that's in theaters now, did not screen early for critics. This is always a bad sign. Regardless, Friday morning, I purchased a ticket to see “Vampire Academy” at a movie theater on East 86th Street on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. While watching, I kept a running diary of my experience. Here's how that went: 10:45 a.m.: There are 11 other people in this theater who woke up this morning and decided, “I am going to the early bird showing of ‘Vampire Academy’ today.” 10:50 a.m.: Looking around, most of the people in here appear as if they are retirement age. This does not make retirement seem very appealing. 10:52 a.m.: The trailer for “Fading Gigolo,” a movie starring Woody Allen, just started playing. When we first see Allen, the man behind me said “oh no” out loud. 10:59 a.m.: "Vampire Academy" has been playing for three minutes and two women in the row in front of me just collected their belongings and walked out. 11:00 a.m.: A character in thi ...

Vampire Academy star Lucy Fry knows all too well how lucky she is to have snagged the role of Lissa Dragomir in the movie adaptation of the wildly popular book series. OK! chats with the Aussie actress about her instant friendship with co-star Zoey Deutch, the wardrobe item she may have grabbed from set and why she’s so protective of Lissa. OK! News: Sarah Hyland Explains How She Ended Up With a £3000 Room Service Bill Filming Vampire Academy OK!: Zoey mentioned she gave you a lift after you read together for your roles in Vampire Academy. Did you immediately have a connection? Lucy Fry: We me read the scenes together and it was funny how it kind of instantly fell into this connection Rose and Lissa have. We were reading the scenes and it just felt really alive and we had a really dynamic bond. When we were leaving and I was like, “Oh, I’m getting the bus home,” because that’s what Australians do in LA, we don’t realize you’re not meant to get the bus. I still think it’s weird peop ...

Three Hairstyles to Try From the Vampire Academy Premiere
People Magazine - about 3 years
Xavier Collin/Celebrity Monitor/Splash News Online Getting a little sick of your go-to messy topknot, but are unwilling to put any more effort into your hair? Luckily the lovely starlets at the Vampire Academy premiere are here to demonstrate three easy hairstyles that you could give a spin this weekend. They’re all feminine, pretty and require a minimal time commitment. First up is Zoey Deutch, who offset her romantic one-shoulder Monique Lhuillier number with an edgier loose braid down her back. She opted for the (currently very popular) messy look with a section of hair wrapped around the elastic at the bottom. She set hers apart by adding volume at the crown and sweeping her bangs to the side for more of a Katniss Everdeen vibe. RELATED PHOTOS: More fabulous star hair from every angle! Then Bella Thorne also opted for a look with lots of height at the crown, pulling a section of hair back at the top but letting the front pieces loose to blend into the rest of her curls. Th ...

'Vampire Academy' Trailer Sucks Blood, Teen Angst
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The full-length trailer for "Vampire Academy," "Mean Girls" director Mark Waters' adaptation of Richelle Mead's popular young adult book about teen vampires making their way through high school, has arrived. The new teaser puts heavy focus on protagonist Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch, a mix of Ellen Page in "Juno" and Lindsay Lohan in "Mean Girls," depending on the line reading), the half human-half vampire at the story's center. "We saw hundreds of people for that part, and there was something about Zoey where she didn't look physically like I had imagined the part. I imagined someone who looked more like an Olympic athlete," Waters told HuffPost Entertainment back in August. "But there was just something about what she brought to the performance, which was this attitude and energy and this strength and confidence, as well as the facility to deal with the very intricate dialogue and make it real and make it funny. There was nobody really close to her in capturing Rose's essence. She was ...

'Mean Girls' Director Tries To Reinvent YA Genre
Huffington Post - over 3 years
To say this year has been unkind to young adult adaptations would be an understatement. In February, "Beautiful Creatures" opened with just $7.5 million in ticket sales, this despite being based on the popular YA novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. In March, "The Host," an adaptation of "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer's YA novel, underwhelmed with an opening of $10 million. Last weekend, it was "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" that stumbled: the adaptation of Cassandra Claire's popular YA series grossed only $14 million in its first five days of release. Even the first trailer for the adaptation of Veronica Roth's "Divergent," the series many have pegged as the heir apparent to "The Hunger Games," was met with a few shrugs after it debuted during the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show on Sunday. This is the world that Mark Waters' adaptation of Richelle Mead's "Vampire Academy" is coming into next year. Not that the "Mean Girls" director is too worried. "The marke ...

The big-screen adaptation of Richelle Mead's "Vampire Academy" has found its lead—and she's one of the "Beautiful Creatures"! Actress Zoey Deutch, who appears in the Southern gothic out February 14, will play tempestuous Dhampir Rose Hathaway when production begins on the blood-sucking flick this summer, Deadline reports. Also cast are Australian newcomer Lucy Fry, who will Rose's best friend Lissa Dragomir, and Russian actor Danila Kozlovskiy, who will play Rose's mentor and love interest Dimitri Belikov. Mark Waters ("Mean Girls") will direct based on a script written by brother Dan Waters. The film, which has been renamed "Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters," follows best friends Rose and Lissa, who through a twist of fate have become "shadow-kissed" (meaning they are telepathically bound to each other).
