Traffic surge. System busy.

by Harrison in News Flash

Since the Techcrunch story, we’ve had so much traffic that our system has been running at 100% capacity for more than 24 hours.  We have implemented several measures to mitigate the traffic surge and ensure the quality of service for existing users.  For example, our system will close registration automatically if we’re under heavy load and can’t provide a smooth experience.  So far, we have already turned down thousands of new registrations.

That said, a lot of users’ imports still time out.  Normally, the import should complete within a minute, so "time-out" was supposed to be a rare status message.  However, since our system has been pushed to its limits, the imports take longer and timeouts are more commonly seen.  Timeout does not mean that the process has died.  Your friends’ results will still come back after some time.

Thank you all for your patience while we alleviate our growing pains.

Phew I think I managed to sneak in right at the beginning of the TechCrunch wave – knowing what I know now about spokeo, I would have been kicking myself :)

I had a few questions (and a bug?) to raise with you guys, but given that you have your hands full at the moment, I probably wait a few days to use the feedback form.

In the meanwhile, I think one of my friends updated something.. ooooh look *shiny* :D

Thanks, Balaji, for your kind consideration. You are right. We still have our hands full at the moment; however, we will always make time to talk to our users :)

Please don’t hesitate to contact me any time you got a question. I will always try to answer within a day.

Any chance that we will see the system:
    1) Remember your social networks logins and pool them for new friends at some time period (weekly, for example)?
    2) Have more frequent updates on friend activity on social networks? Right now it feels like there’s one update on a lucky day, maybe less.

We do not store any login or sensitive information at the moment, so we can’t syndicate your new friends right now. If we were to do it, we will provide that feature as an option. Thank you for the suggestion!

As for seeing more frequent updates from your friends, I think you should ask your friends to update more often :) There is nothing Spokeo can do to help.
