Scam Hype

June 21st, 2010 by Nasrin   Comments »

In the wake of all the commotion that Facebook was perpetrating a scam against its members regarding privacy, as the official May 31 “Opt-Out Day” approached, some Facebook users vowed to delete their profiles from the site in protest.

In a special website dedicated to the "opt-out" campaign however, as it turned out, only about 36,000 people actually declared their intent to leave Facebook because of the so-called scam (never indicating when they might actually do so.)

Further, despite all the flap about the scam, according to one source Facebook actually gained some 9 million new unique visitors last month. Maybe the interest in opting out was just a scam… (?)’

If Facebook were a country, it would have the third largest population in the world. With such a sizable user community, Facebook has taken steps to ensure that privacy is maintained, and has gone out of its way to debunk any myths that it is perpetrating any so-called privacy scam. It has further made it clear that it does not sell user information.

What are your thoughts on the so-called Facebook scam? Do you maintain active profiles on multiple social networks?

World Cup Fever!

June 18th, 2010 by Nasrin   Comments »

Are you following the 2010 World Cup games? This year’s Cup is especially significant. The World Cup represents a convergence of all nations who come together for the love of soccer, or as it is known everywhere around the world, Joga Bonita (that is, the Beautiful Game!). This year, the event takes place in the historically apartheid state of South Africa.

As anyone watching the games might have noticed, the action is often punctuated by the buzzing of hundreds of vuvuzelas blown by fans in the stadium. Vuvuzelas are commonly blown by fans at football matches in South Africa as well as Brazil and other Latin American countries. They are blowing horns that emit a buzzing noise – and in some cases, hearing loss!

In any case, they cause quite an exciting revelry!

Now you can surf Spokeo while experiencing all the glory of a World Cup match through this website, that lets you search alongside the loud buzzing of a vuvuzela!

What teams are you hoping to see in the final match?

Check out one of my favorite videos below, of the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to get into the spirit!

What we’re watching this week

June 2nd, 2010 by Nasrin   Comments »

Have you heard of TED? According to their site, they are a small non-profit organization devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading." Since 1984, they’ve been devoted to bringing people together from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design.

They frequently post videos from the best and brightest thinkers speaking on a variety of contemporary issues.

This week, we’re watching these three videos on technology.

Lalitesh Katragadda discusses using geo-data to let people around the globe map their neighborhoods. These collaborative maps can be used to fight disaster and build economies, highlighting the significance of a communal web effort to change the world.

Nicholas Christakis discusses how we are all embedded in vast "social networks" and how a variety of traits (like happiness and obesity) can spread from person to person in these networks. Discusses how your location in your network impacts your life in unimaginable ways.

Christopher Poole on the power and price of online anonymity. How users run and manage a public, mainstream, media website.

Website Maintenance

May 31st, 2010 by Harrison   Comments »

We will undergo a major website maintenance starting 10pm Pacific Time tonight, 5/31/2010.  The website might go down for several minutes from time to time, but everything should go back to normal within 2 hours.  This site maintenance will incorporate several new servers and should significantly improve our website’s performance during the peak hours.  We will continue to work on scaling our infrastructure to meet the growing demands and bring back our stellar performance.
