Background checks companies began putting their massive criminal, marriage, driving, and educational records online. People search was no longer about finding someone to converse with, as was the case with email directories. People search turned into sleuthing. It became a way to verify background information and procure background information.
It was no longer a way to find people to connect with, but to find information about people you already knew. Compared to Spokeo today, people search was tailored for business transactions as opposed to social interaction.
