Jay Z Thanks Rappers Who Inspire Him, Says Black People Are 'Magic'
Huffington Post - 8 months
Jay Z went on a rare tweetstorm Thursday night to thank damn near everybody in the hip-hop game and their mama, and to proclaim that black people are “magic.” Presumably off the high of being the first rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame that evening, Hov took time to thank many of the artists who’ve inspired him throughout the years. In a series of tweets (with some hilarious commentary in between), Jigga Man gave a shoutout to nearly a hundred artists, including hip-hop icons, past collaborators, those he’s had beef with and newer artists. “Thank you to all the people that have inspired me,” Jay Z started, before firing off names including Biggie, Tupac, Chuck D, Lauryn Hill, Nas, Andre 3000, Lil Wayne, Redman, Big Daddy Kane, Drake, Future, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Tee Grizzley and too many other people to name.  At one point during his shoutouts, the hip-hop mogul ― who only has 262 tweets since starting his account in 2008 ― promised th...

A Tribe Called Quest Releases A Perfect Meditation On The Sad State Of America
Huffington Post - over 1 year
While it seemed that virtually everyone, regardless of their political beliefs, was utterly shocked when Republican candidate Donald Trump won last week’s presidential election, iconic hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest saw it coming.  “I knew it was gonna happen,” Jarobi White told Vanity Fair last week. The outcome was predicted on A Tribe Called Quest’s latest album, “We Got It From Here … Thank You 4 Your Service,” their first release in 18 years. The album, available for streaming below, features Jarobi White, Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and the voice of late member Phife Dawg, along with guest appearances by artists including Elton John and André 3000. Although there is a song titled “The Donald” on the record, the track “We the People ...” features lyrics that will surely resonate the most with those who opposed Trump. The song’s chorus sums up present-day America in simple and scathing verses: All you black folks, you must go All you Mexicans, you must go And ...

John Legend's 'Hey Ya' Performance On 'Lip Sync Battle' Was Cooler Than Cool
Huffington Post - over 1 year
John Legend might have a career as an André 3000 tribute artist in his future.  On Sunday’s special live episode of “Lip Sync Battle,” which featured other all-stars like Olivia Munn and Terry Crews, the “All of Me” singer gave his best impression of the Outkast singer for a performance of “Hey Ya.” Dressed in the same plaid pants, green shirt and suspenders André sports in the song’s video, Legend shook it like a polaroid picture while his wife, supermodel and host Chrissy Teigen, watched amusedly from her DJ booth. And as if the performance couldn’t get any better, music icon Stevie Wonder joined Legend onstage to rock out at the keyboard.  Watch the whole performance above. “Lip Sync Battle” Season 3 premieres Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. ET on Spike. -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. 20 Distinct Regional American Accents, Ranked
Huffington Post - over 2 years
By: Megan Frye Credit: Jennifer Bui/Thrillist From sea to shining sea, the United States is one of the most culturally diverse countries on the planet. This means there are plenty of opportunities to mess around with the language, and what defines an "American accent" changes depending on where you are. Thrillist has taken on the task of ranking a sampling of American accents from the most vomit-inducing to the most pleasant, with a little bit of dry heave in between. See where you fit in. More: The 10 Most Beautiful Neighborhoods in America, Ranked 20. New Jerseyan Oh my gawd! Jersey gets a bad rap. But it's not so much the state that is offensive as much as the accent. It's akin to the sound of chain-smoking rats mating in an oil slick under the George Washington Bridge. Except somehow, the hair is worse. Prime example: Pauly D 19. Floridian Florida is well known for its tourist attractions and for producing the weirdest headlines in the country, from bath salt...

OutKast Maybe Could Have Prevented That Super Bowl Wardrobe Malfuction
Huffington Post - over 2 years
One-half of OutKast appeared on ESPN's "The Dan Le Batard Show" Thursday and revealed that the duo was once asked to perform at the Super Bowl. According to Big Boi, we can all blame André 3000 for the halftime show that never was -- he refused to cut down his songs to fit the allotted time space.  "He said, 'Nah, can’t do it,'" Big Boi recalled of his writing partner. "We look at it now and we laugh. Hopefully they invite us back."  But had they said yes, they might have prevented the infamous 2004 "wardrobe malfunction" between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, Pitchfork notes.  Big Boi didn't say when they were asked to perform, but the two songs he named -- "The Way You Move" and "Hey Ya!"-- were both released in 2003 at a time in Super Bowl halftime show history when organizers were booking more of-the-moment talent. The few years leading up to that 2004 onstage accident saw artists performing top tracks generally no more than a few years old. But who performed in 2...

Why I Will Never Want the 'Same Love'
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Full disclosure: I've lost friends over Macklemore, but trust me I'll survive. How did you feel last night? Watching all those beautiful couples making public declarations of love and commitment, as hegemonic as it may be, was a truly moving work. Macklemore has in so many ways added to the visibility and popularity of the gay rights movement. In his short popularity, he has become a beacon of white gay hope and the face of "progress." As an independent artist, his fame and wealth are truly surprising and almost inspiring. However, Macklemore does a more destructive and problematic work, and his success, as validated by his new Grammy awards, speak to a larger injustice. Last night's Grammys was an expert case study of how the reproduction of whiteness, as conflated with "queerness," is pervasive in our culture and the erasure and appropriation of sonic Blackness is central to the popularity and success of artists in the industry. As many of my housemates said before I forced t...

For The Stans: Big Boi And Andre 3000 Working On Solo Projects Before New Outkast Album
Bossip - about 4 years
Well, at least we’re getting some new music. Big Boi And Andre 3000 Working On Separate Albums Can we get a snippet, please? According to Vibe: After Queen Latifah cleared up rumors about a new OutKast album, it looks like the hip-hop duo will be cranking out solo efforts before a group LP. The group’s DJ and producer, Mr. DJ, told Revolt that although both 3 Stacks and General Patton have been seen visiting Stankonia Studios in their native Atlanta, the group’s known workspace, they were not there working on a new OutKast album. The two have actually been putting in work on their own albums. Mr. DJ adds that Andre may be dropping his long anticipated solo project this year, revealing that a lot of material has already been recorded for it. As for Big Boi, Mr. DJ says that he was just in the studio with him last week, laying down tracks to the follow-up for Boi’s 2012 LP Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. While the hip-hop duo will be keeping busy this year with over ...

12 Songs Other Than 'Hey Ya!' That Outkast Needs To Perform On Their Reunion Tour
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Music blogs scrambled for confirmation of an Outkast reunion on Tuesday afternoon, but it was Revolt TV that confirmed on Tuesday night that Andre 3000 and Big Boi would indeed reconnect for a 2014 tour. Marking the 20th anniversary of the duo's debut album, "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik," next year may not hold much possibility of a new Outkast album, but after 10 years absent from the stage, a string of performances is certainly good enough for fans. (One disappointment: Even though long-time collaborator Sleepy Brown posted a photo to Instagram saying that Outkast would headline Coachella, though, Billboard reports that isn't definite just yet.) Still, Outkast is touring soon, and while it's basically a guarantee they will perform the deliciously funky "Hey Ya!" during their 2014 concerts, here are 12 other songs that need to make the setlist. "Myintrotoletuknow" from "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" "Ain't No Thang" from "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" "Player's Ball...

Jhene Aiko - 'Sail Out' EP
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Jhené Aiko, R&B's best underground artist has coasted into the mainstream by topping the US iTunes charts with her 'Sail Out' EP. Released this week, the EP has already entered top 10 in the UK, and has seen the songstress greeted with open arms on both sides of the Atlantic. The 7 track project does what the title suggests, with no harsh winds. 'Sail Out' is mostly a smooth, scenic journey through the lake of love stories, Jhene's misfortunes and triumphs set against the echos of eclectic, mellow earthy wind instruments, likened to her soft tone. 'The Vapours' is a kick off to her journey with sweet Chris Rea-type guitar licks before its interrupted a jaunty bounce sound allowing Vince Staples to features. Bed Peace featuring multi talented Childish Gambino is the most sun kist track of the EP, a flower power vibe with Jhene at her most smiliest. This sunshine trip continues for her offering 'Stay Ready' with the West Coast's self proclaimed King Of NY, Kendrick Lamar. J...
