Kids Who Love 'The Snowy Day' Are Getting An Early Holiday Present
Huffington Post - about 1 year
If you’re looking to build a diverse children’s library, one of the first books you’re likely to come across is “The Snowy Day.”  Ezra Jack Keats wrote and illustrated “The Snowy Day” in 1962 as a response to the overwhelming whiteness of children’s literature. Upon publication, it became the first picture book to feature an African-American protagonist.  “None of the manuscripts I’d been illustrating featured any black kids ― except for token blacks in the background,” he wrote in an unpublished autobiography.  “My book would have him there simply because he should have been there all along.” But “The Snowy Day” is beloved for much more than its political importance. It’s a relatable yet somehow magical story about a boy named Peter exploring his neighborhood on a snowy day, and the illustrations and text are deceptively simple.  One of my son’s favorite pages shows Peter sitting in a warm bath after telling his mother about his adventures. We always read the text toget...

So when the show’s lead, James Gandolfini, was found dead from a sudden heart attack in his Rome hotel room in 2013, his co-star and TV daughter Jamie-Lynn Sigler felt a cruel irony in the immense loss. For Sigler, losing Gandolfini wasn’t just about coping with the death of a colleague. As she tells “Oprah: Where Are They Now?”, the 51-year old had become like family ― not just to her,...

How 'The Sopranos' Execs Helped Jamie-Lynn Sigler Realize She Had An Eating Disorder
Huffington Post - about 2 years
It's been 10 years since Jamie-Lynn Sigler went public with her painful history of exercise bulimia, but in a Monday conversation with HuffPost Live, the actress reflected further on that trying time, sharing that the staff of her HBO series "The Sopranos" were instrumental in bringing the disorder to her attention. "'The Sopranos' was a big thing, because they had asked me to put on weight," she recounted. "They were concerned, I think, for my health, but [also], they just didn't feel I was the picture of a girl that lived in an Italian household that ate pasta all the time, so they were big catalysts in me taking a step back and realizing the issue." Sigler starred as Meadow Soprano on the critically-acclaimed series from ages 17 to 26. During that period, the actress' eating disorder became her main "source of control."
