‘If You Take Out Kenan Thompson, The Studio Will Explode'
Huffington Post - 10 months
Kenan Thompson took the stage in an oversized three-piece suit and an awkward wig bursting with Jheri curls. He looked, objectively speaking, completely and utterly ridiculous. Seconds before, a BET logo flashed across the screen as SNL cast member Will Forte, playing a talk show announcer, introduced the sketch: “It’s ‘What’s Up With That!’ Tackling the issues of today with soul,” Forte bellowed. “Now, here’s your host: Diondre Cole!” It was October 17, 2009, and unlikely as it seemed, Thompson was finally about to have his moment with the debut of a Saturday Night Live skit that would define him. He boogied in with a silly zip to each step. Perfectly in time, perfectly in tune and perfectly in control, Thompson began to sing, “Ooo―eee! What up with that? What up with that?” along with his two go-go dancers, played by Nasim Pedrad and Jenny Slate. What, exactly, was happening? Almost no one seemed to know, most especially the bewildered guests of the fictional show, whi...

Anne Hathaway Regrets Looking At Pinterest Before Planning Son's Birthday
Huffington Post - 11 months
Anne Hathaway knows she should have never looked at Pinterest while planning a party for her son’s first birthday. On Thursday’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Hathaway joined DeGeneres to promote her movie “Colossal” with co-star Jason Sudeikis. During the interview, Hathaway mentioned her son, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, had just turned one and that his “low-key” birthday party had a rainbow theme. Then, she explained she made one grave error while planning the event.  “I made the mistake, I went on Pinterest and looked at other people’s 1-year-old parties,” she said. “It’s not fair what some people do.” Hathaway, who welcomed Jonathan with husband Adam Shulman last March, also expressed some envy of party planners whose kids (probably) have the coolest parties. “You know party planners have children, which is definitely not fair,” she joked. “Think about it. They blow it out.” Along with Sudeikis, Hathaway joked about other parenting experie...

A Definitive Ranking Of 32 Trump-Related ‘SNL’ Sketches This Season
Huffington Post - 11 months
“Saturday Night Live” is currently enjoying its most successful season in decades, thanks in no small part to the the country’s ravenous appetite for political commentary in the lead up to and fallout from the president election.  The show’s depictions of public figures like Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Kellyanne Conway and Sean Spicer have helped many to digest the world in which we find ourselves. Some of the bits have become instant classics. Some never quite got the due they deserved. Some, frankly, weren’t that great. So, since this is the internet, we decided to rank 32 Trump-related sketches this season. A few notes before we begin: I have made the executive choice not to include Weekend Update bits. That’s it’s own thing and it just didn’t feel right. If I missed a sketch, please forgive me. Please direct your hate mail to maxwell@huffingtonpost.com. I developed the rankings using an algorithm based on historical performance of “SNL” sketches over time...

These Celebrity Baby Names Might Be Everywhere Soon
Huffington Post - 11 months
We know that celebrity baby names can impact the popularity charts for years to come. Way before Emily Blunt welcomed baby Hazel, its choice by Julia Roberts pushed it an astonishing 600 places up the U.S. popularity chart.  Heather Locklear and Reese Witherspoon were moms to early Avas, which turned that old Hollywood Glamour name into a modern star. And Kevin Costner and Harrison Ford were both dads to sons named Liam more than a decade before it reached the U.S. Top 10 list. So which star choices of the past year are most likely to inspire the baby names the rest of us choose? First, the influential celebrity baby girl names: Arrow Rhodes ― Jensen and Danneel Ackles blur the line between babies and superheroes. This year, daughter Justice Jay was joined by twins Zeppelin Bram, a boy, and Arrow Rhodes, a girl. Arrow fits with meaningful names like Journey, and proves that dramatic word names can have more appeal. After all, arrows find their targets, making this a mod...

Watch These Politicians Morph Into Their 'SNL' Characters

These days, it’s not clear if “Saturday Night Live” is art imitating life, or life imitating art. Whatever, one thing’s for sure: The show is getting way too good at political impressions. A-Listers Party At The White House Until Morning To Say Goodbye To Barack Obama
Huffington Post - about 1 year
With only two weeks left until Barack and Michelle Obama vacate the White House for good, the first family welcomed a host of celebrity guests on Friday night for a star-studded farewell party.  Aside from an awards show, there haven’t been this many famous people gathered in one room since a casting call for a holiday-themed Garry Marshall romantic comedy.  The White House bash effectively serves as the kickoff to events celebrating President Obama’s time in office, leading up to his final address, which he’ll deliver in Chicago on Jan. 10. Days later, President-elect Donald Trump will call 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. home after his inauguration, for which he’s struggled to find big-name performers.  In contrast, Obama’s farewell party attracted some of the biggest A-listers around. Attendees reportedly included Meryl Streep, George and Amal Clooney, Robert De Niro, Beyoncé and Jay Z, Nick Jonas, Jordin Sparks, David Letterman, Paul McCartney, Kelly Rowland, Olivia Wilde and Ja...

Random Flicks Worth Checking Out This Week
Huffington Post - about 1 year
***PLEASE POST IN HUFFINGTON POST CANADA. THANKS!!*** What we've got here is a list of good and bad blockbusters, MOWs, B-movies, and everything in between. And they're decidedly, unabashedly random. Why not roll the dice this week? Casino Royale Where to find it: Hulu The cast: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Wright The synopsis: "Armed with a license to kill, Secret Agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007 and must defeat a weapons dealer in a high stakes game of poker at Casino Royale." Think of Casino Royale as the Batman Begins of the James Bond franchise. Producers finally decided to strip away the gloss, the gadgets, and the myriad catch-phrases. End result: a badass Bond who's seriously cool to watch. Best of all, he's not annoyingly superhuman like other Bonds I could name (I'm looking at you, Roger Moore). So anyway, this is the James Bond movie that started it all! Even though, you know, it only came out a few years ago. Hey...

On the Culture Front: Falsettos, Stephin Merritt, Andrew Bird, and more
Huffington Post - about 1 year
I saw "Falsettos" the day after the election in a haze of despair. The woman sitting next to me quietly sobbed throughout the show, and I felt tears welling up when Stephanie J. Block sang, "I'm tired...of all the happy men who rule the world," in her rousing rendition of "Trina's Song." Trina's world is falling apart. Her marriage has been shattered by the news her husband is gay, and her mind is spinning to find a scenario that keeps her family intact. The thought jumps one step further in the chorus' refrain that laments the patriarchy. William Finn's frantic score matches the intensity of the neurotic characters. Multiple thought lines often run parallel through the dynamic and frenzied songs until they clash in a moment of color clarity. A tragedy wrapped in farce, "Falsettos" makes a vivid case for the value of families outside the traditional nuclear ones extolled by social conservatives. While William Finn and James Lapine wrote "Falsettos" at the beginning of the Reagan admini...

Alec Baldwin Returns To 'SNL' As Man Without A Plan Donald Trump
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Alec Baldwin channeled an out-of-his-depth Donald Trump on his post-election return to “Saturday Night Live.” The actor as the president-elect met with his bewildered campaign manager Kellyanne Conway (played by Kate McKinnon), a military chief and an unemployed coal worker excited about Trump’s promises of getting his job back. But each time they asked the future POTUS a question, he really didn’t know how to respond. There was a surprise appearance from former “SNL” cast member Jason Sudeikis, who returned to the show to reprise his role as former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. And when Beck Bennett as Vice President-elect Mike Pence dropped by, Baldwin commented on his eventful evening watching the “Hamilton” musical on Friday ― before backtracking on major issues such as the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants and the scrapping of Obamacare. Baldwin as Trump did praise the Indiana governor for t...

Olivia Wilde Spends Time With Her 'Drinking Buddy' In Breastfeeding Selfie
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Olivia Wilde has one cute drinking buddy. The actress posted a photo on Instagram on Monday that showed her breastfeeding her daughter, Daisy, whom she welcomed in early October with husband Jason Sudeikis. In the caption, she described her second child as her “drinking buddy,” a description that seems fitting since Wilde starred in the 2013 movie “Drinking Buddies.” My drinking buddy. #neverunderestimatethepowerofawoman A photo posted by Olivia Wilde (@oliviawilde) on Oct 24, 2016 at 3:12pm PDT Wilde’s shirt in the photo also stood out. Jason Sudeikis Says Olivia Wilde Almost Gave Birth At A Beyoncé Concert
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis welcomed their second child, a girl named Daisy, last week. Though their little one was delivered in an Upper East Side hospital, things almost didn’t turn out that way.  During an appearance on Harry Connick Jr.’s talk show Friday, Sudeikis revealed that the two were in a car on their way to a Beyoncé concert when Daisy figured she wanted to make an appearance.  “We were in line to get in the Lincoln Tunnel and there was an accident in there,” the actor said. “Everything was gummed up, so it was going to take us like an hour to get through the tunnel, and we would have been a half hour late to the concert, which would have been a bummer because we would miss all the choreography and fireworks.” Another kind of fireworks started when Wilde began to have contractions and the two high-tailed it out of the tunnel.  “I don’t know if it was the pressure, if it was the traffic, or the fact that we were going to be late. It was just bad in the ba...
