Rashida Jones Pays Homage To The '90s With 'Flip And Rewind' Music Video
Huffington Post - about 2 years
Rashida Jones just dropped a video for her new single "Flip and Rewind," and it has us feeling all sorts of nostalgic.  In the video, which includes a cameo by Jermaine Dupri, Jones reminisces about the past, expressing her love for all things '90s -- the music, the vibe, the clothes.  "All I wanna do is go back," she tells Durpri over FaceTime. In a dream-like flash, the viewer is transported back to the days of center parts and ponytails, hoop earrings, mom jeans, tiny backpacks and cropped turtlenecks. (The video could also have taken place in Williamsburg last week. We can't quite tell.) There's also a great choreographed dance sequence, which reportedly features Jones' high school dance crew.  Jones explained what drove her to make the video in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.  "The inspiration for the video that Will [McCormack] and I directed was to try to evoke the feeling of the Nineties, but not in a mocking way. I think for you and I both, it’s suc...

#inthegridmusic: 12.9.15

12.9.15 #SongBlogIV (my song of the day): "White Iverson (Remix)" by Post Malone ft. French Montana and Slim Jimmy In a year where there were rap feuds (Meek Mill and Drake) and controversy, a few rappers were able to get a breakout hit. Post Malone was no different. Called "the most random success" by the Fader magazine, Post Malone's first single is a great one. This remix featuring French Montana and Slim Jimmy (Rae Sremmurd) is even better. SEE: http://www.thefader.com/2015/05/14/everything-you-need-to-know-about-post-malone One thing that is important to note however, is that Post Malone is this breakout rapper from Dallas this year (and in a while, quite honestly). But there are a couple more Dallas rappers you should check out. Here are 4 Dallas rappers you may have not heard of and/or you should revisit: 1. The D.O.C: It's Funky He's worked with heavyweights - Dr. Dre, N.W.A. You might have also seen him portrayed on this year's Straight Outta Compton....

On the "A" w/Souleo: A Diva Shares Her Regrets and Looks Back
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Looking back on her life, Jennifer Holliday knows that she has much to take pride in and celebrate. She originated the role of Effie White in the classic Broadway musical Dreamgirls, is a Tony and two-time Grammy Award winner and has persevered though the challenges of depression and living with multiple sclerosis. Still, she's not ashamed to admit that she has a few life regrets. Jennifer Holiday/credit: Lou Freeman My greatest regret is that I've been a loner and led a reclusive life. In one way, you think you're protecting yourself, but on the other hand, you're unable to grow and receive love and explore new possibilities in life...I've had lots of problems with depression, and I stayed in darkness too long. I was afraid to live, and afraid to love and let people help me or trust. I think that was a big mistake. Holliday is now casting off the darkness to head back into the spotlight with her first solo album in 19 years, The Song Is You. The album includes covers of jazz s...

Startup City: Tony Hsieh's Downtown Project
Huffington Post - over 4 years
I have never been to Las Vegas more than in the last year, and I have never liked it until now. That's because there is a world I want to live in growing before my very eyes beyond the Strip. This past weekend, for the 4th time since last summer, I was back as a guest in Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh's world, "Downtown Project", to judge the finals of a national startup competition for Tech Cocktail. This event, which included an eclectic group of trailblazers in the art-tech community (Jermaine DuPri, Jay Adelson, Raj Kapoor, Michael Chasen, Christine Herron, among many others) spilled into the premiere version of Life is Beautiful, a food, art, and music fest spread out over 15 city blocks with dozens of bands, featuring Beck, The Killers, and a stage dedicated to inspiring speakers was sponsored by Downtown Project. Tony Hsieh is no stranger to gambling his own money on visions he believes in, and he has both won and lost in the past -- but never retreats. This time Tony's betting $...
