"Snowden": Love, Life and Privacy in the Time of Surveillance
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Oliver Stone's excellent new film "Snowden" is a primer on life in the digital age - the perils to privacy, professionalism and the personal. Through an extended series of flashbacks in the life of whistleblower Edward Snowden, Stone shows us the impacts of global surveillance on relationships from international to interpersonal. Stone's dramatization builds around and out from Laura Poitras Academy Award winning documentary "Citizen Four." We meet Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) in the prison like confines of his Hong Kong hotel room, a refugee of conscience, blowing the whistle on his U.S. spy agency employers. Through a series of flashbacks, Snowden emerges a brilliant, geeky, well considered patriot from a military family. He is moved by the events of 9/11 to volunteer for Special Forces training. After breaking both legs, Snowden is forced off the active front lines into intelligence service. He eagerly joins CIA global communications at their headquarters in...

Arnold Schwarzenegger tries his hand at drama with “Maggie”
Hollywood News - almost 3 years
Ever since he left office as the two term governor of California and returned to the acting world, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the film choices of Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s slowly gone from being a wise cracking killing machine (sometimes literally) to someone more contemplative of the toll it all takes on a person. To be sure, the movies are almost all throwaway popcorn entertainment regardless, but there’s a definite shift that’s easy to notice (the very talented Matt Singer often writes about this in terms of Schwarzenegger, so I highly recommend reading something of his). This week, there’s another new side of Schwarzenegger on display in Maggie, a zombie drama in which he’s trying to avoid killing for one of the first times in his career. As a quick plot summation, the film follows a farmer who sees his daughter slowly turning into a zombie. The man, played by Schwarzenegger, doesn’t want to see her succumb to the “disease” after promising his wife that he’d look after her...

'Thanks for Sharing' LA Premiere: Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins, and P!nk Celebrate the Sex Dramedy (PHOTOS)
Moviefone Blog - over 4 years
At the Los Angeles premiere of "Thanks for Sharing," the stars didn't look like they were struggling with sex addiction on the red carpet -- but there was plenty of sex appeal. The comedy-drama from Stuart Blumberg stars Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins, Josh Gad as three men who suffer from sex addiction. The three men, along with Alecia Moore a.k.a. P!nk, begin to navigate the road to recovery and repair their romantic and family lives. "Thanks for Sharing," which also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Joely Richardson, and Patrick Fugit, is definitely a much more lighthearted take on sex addiction than Steve McQueen's "Shame," but a less comedic approach than the upcoming "Don Jon." At the Hollywood premiere last night, Ruffalo was the only no-show, but the rest of the cast appeared along with some familiar faces, including Tony Shalhoub, Bryce Dallas Howard, Peter Gallagher, Rich Sommer ("Mad Men"), and more. Robbins and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons were seen chatting it up at the aft...

Gwyneth Paltrow On Sex Addiction and “Thanks for Sharing”
Psych Central - over 4 years
Gwyneth Paltrow is dipping her acting toes in the addiction pool once again, film lovers. The Country Strong actress stars in the upcoming Thanks for Sharing, a film about three people who are undergoing a 12-step program for sex addiction. However, this time around Paltrow doesn’t play the addict like she did in Country Strong; instead, she plays Phoebe, a woman who becomes romantically involved with Adam (Mark Ruffalo), a sex addict. Sex addiction has long struggled to find its footing among addiction disorders. Some people recognize it; others claim it’s an “excuse” for “bad behavior” (think the Tiger Woods and Jesse James scandals). Robert Downey, Jr. Schools Gwyneth Paltrow On Addiction According to Paltrow, she learned a lot about sex addiction while making the film. There’s a line in the movie where somebody says something like, ‘Isn’t sex addiction just an excuse men use when they get caught cheating?’ But actually, it is a real pathology. It was interesting ...

US Magazine - over 4 years
What a temptress! In the newly released trailer for Thanks for Sharing, Gwyneth Paltrow plays a woman who falls in love with a sex addict (Mark Ruffalo). In one scene, she strips down to lacy black lingerie and grinds against the bedroom door. PHOTOS: Gwyneth Paltrow through the years In addition to Paltrow and Ruffalo, the film also features Josh Gad, Tim Robbins and Joely Richardson. It also marks Pink's feature film debut; the pop singer uses her birth name, Alecia Moore, in the credits. The movie premiered to mostly favorable reviews during the Toronto Film Festival in 2012. Paltrow explained why she joined the project during a red carpet interview with The Globe and Mail. Michael Giltz: DVDs: "Ripper Street," "Borgen," "Foyle's War" And More Great TV
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
Great TV keeps flooding the DVD shelves because great TV is all over the airwaves. Here's a rundown of some recent releases. Now if only someone could deliver some great sitcoms.... (Archer excepted, of course.) RIPPER STREET ($29.99 DVD; BBC) -- One of the more entertaining and frustrating shows of the past year. Ripper Street has a strong cast and is just good enough to make you expect it to be a lot better. Our hero is Inspector Reid (Matthew Macfadyen), a man who must deal with crime in the East End after Jack The Ripper has taunted police and shamed them to the public. Jerome Flynn does yeoman's work as his no-nonsense sidekick but Adam Rothenberg steals the show as the impossibly knowledgable Captain Homer Jackson. So what's the problem? The cases become a little silly, Reid is constantly steamrolling over everyone by thinking that yelling is a response to questions and Jackson really is absurdly multi-talented in a way that would shame Da Vinci. Logic also went o...

Michael Giltz: Theater: Ethan Hawke and Richard Nixon At Their Finest
Huffington Post - over 5 years
IVANOV *** out of **** CHECKERS ** 1/2 out of **** IVANOV *** out of **** CLASSIC STAGE COMPANY Theater is so ephemeral: see the same show with the same cast one week earlier or one week later or with a different audience and you might well have three subtly different reactions. Not enough is made of when a show is seen. So let's be clear, especially with the havoc that Sandy caused in the theater world. (Which of course doesn't compare to the very real havoc in people's lives.) Obviously performances and rehearsals were lost, just as many shows of the fall prepared to open. Going to see Ivanov was one of the first times I'd left my Long Island City neighborhood since the storm and despite an hour on the train and then walking 30 or so blocks to get there, it was very welcome indeed. But the cast was forced to launch into critics' performances from a standstill. (With so many dates cancelled, it was impossible to reschedule every critic to the new opening dates.) ...

Wednesday, May 16 I have hitched a night flight on Lisa Marie Falcone's G5 to Nice and arrive at Teterboro early enough to sneak three trunks filled with 10 Marchesa gowns onto her plane. Lisa arrives two hours later. She is making her maiden voyage to the 65th Cannes Film Festival as a producer of the hot film,Mud. She arrives with gargantuan Vuitton luggage that fills the fuselage. We are now part of 200,000 filmmakers, dealmakers, studio execs, stars, journalists, models, hookers and yachtsmen ready to see 22 films in competition and party till dawn for 12 days. Festival executives affected by the global financial crisis are delirious with numerous fashion houses acting as major underwriters and allow them to brand and control the press coverage on the red carpets, sometimes overshadowing the very films the festival is presenting.
