Speculation as Sport: Rumors, Gossip and Outing in the Sports World
Huffington Post Sports - about 4 years
Our societal obsession with the personal lives and sexual preferences of entertainers has always been par for the course and something that many entertainers, I imagine, have come to expect and in many ways accept. Now this reckless fascination and speculation has bled into the world of sports and become a sport. The recent relentless and insensitive speculation around the sexual orientation of athletes, specifically NFL players Aaron Rodgers, Kerry Rhodes, Manti Te'o and others, has created an environment where male athletes have joined a very select group of individuals who must answer questions around whom they choose to sleep with. How's that for "yardage gained"? This newfound invasion into the personal lives of athletes is something that many never thought imaginable due the sexual prowess that is projected onto professional male athletes. On the contrary, female athletes have always experienced the reverse of having to prove their "heterosexuality" due to our sexist and pa...

Where Will These High-Profile NFL Vets Land?
Huffington Post Sports - over 4 years
NEW YORK -- Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacher and Ronde Barber grabbed the headlines by retiring, walking away from the game when they almost certainly still could have contributed to NFL teams. Their departures overshadowed the pink slips handed to some longtime starters – and stars. And as training camps open, the likes of John Abraham, Dallas Clark, Richard Seymour and Willis McGahee are unemployed. So are Bart Scott, Kerry Rhodes, Brandon Lloyd and Vince Young. What's the deal? Or, better yet, why haven't these solid players gotten any deals yet? Here's a Pick 6 of positions where veterans with strong resumes are available, maybe even for a discounted price: ___ DEFENSIVE LINE: NFL teams really bulked up on defensive linemen in this year's draft, with nine selected in the first round. But with rotations on the D-line the norm, most rosters will have eight linemen who get onto the field in each game. Available are three-time Super Bowl champion Seymour,...

Glennisha Morgan: The Emasculation of Black Men, Homophobia and Misogyny: A Dangerous Vicious Cycle
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
As I anxiously and giddily sat watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta Reunion Part Three a few Sundays ago, something that Kenya Moore, one of the women featured on the show, said stuck with me during the rest of the week. Her accusations of her former boyfriend Walter being gay seemed spiteful and juvenile. She contradicted herself following her allegation with a statement basically claiming that she only questioned Walter's sexuality, but that it wasn't malicious, and asserted that being gay isn't a character flaw. I'm not exactly a fan of Ms. "Gone With The Wind Fabulous", but her attempt to clear up that particular madness scored her a few brownie points with me, especially knowing that she's buddies with a few gay men on the show. With my small moment of joy in mind, I began to think even more about the situation, which tends to happen frequently, especially within the Black community. The week before Moore was gunning to be crowned drama queen on the reunion sh...

Stampp Corbin: NFL, We Are Watching
Huffington Post Sports - almost 5 years
The recent "scandal" concerning NFL free agent Kerry Rhodes has many in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community on high alert. Rhodes has been "outed" by a reputed lover, Russell "Hollywood" Simpson, who was motivated by Rhodes' denial that he is gay in an interview. Simpson provided photographs of the two them that allegedly reveal intimate moments together. One photo allegedly shows Rhodes kissing Simpson on the side of his head. Simpson also shared intimate text messages. This is only considered a "scandal" because the object of Rhodes' affection is a man. We don't know whether Rhodes is straight, bisexual, gay or simply a young man experimenting, but does it matter? It should not. Rhodes is an excellent football player who was predicted to be picked up by an NFL team by next month. Some are speculating that this will hurt Rhodes' chances of getting a new NFL home. Really? The NFL has harbored wife beaters, drug addicts, alcoholics and even those ...

Wild Day Of NFL Free Agency
Huffington Post Sports - almost 5 years
Wes Welker sure knows how to pick his quarterbacks. The star receiver, Tom Brady's favorite target, is leaving New England and heading to Denver, where he'll join Peyton Manning and the Broncos. Also getting new deals were Reggie Bush in Detroit, Dashon Goldson in Tampa Bay, and even Ray Lewis – with ESPN. Day 2 of the NFL's free agency frenzy was highlighted by Welker grabbing a two-year deal with the Broncos, who had the AFC's best regular-season record last year. He gives Manning one of the steadiest targets the four-time league MVP ever has had. "When you look at Wes in the middle of the field, you can't cover him," Broncos boss John Elway said. "He does such a tremendous job of getting open, finding seams in zones, beating man-to-man coverage. So, he'll be a huge asset for us inside." The best slot receiver in the league, Welker caught 118 passes for 1,354 yards and six TDs last season. That the Broncos are signing a top player away from New England...

Barbara Bruno: NFL Game Picks: Predicting Every Week 14 Contest
Huffington Post Sports - about 5 years
In an NFL Weekend marred by tragedy, one player may have changed his course forever. On Sunday, Kansas City quarterback Brady Quinn truly had his finest hour, leading a broken-hearted team to victory. It was also his best personal moment in the national spotlight. If you have been too busy to watch, take a moment. it's worth the time. In his post-game appearance (provided here courtesy of the Wall Street Journal and YouTube), Quinn urged everyone watching to "try to actually help if someone is battling something deeper on the inside than what they are revealing on a day-to-day basis ... When you ask someone how are they are doing, do you really mean it?" If we never hear another word from this young man, he may have had more impact in those few minutes than others will have in their lives. After predicting the success of multiple underdogs in Week 13, what were the two teams that ruined my otherwise stellar week of NFL picks? The favored Jets and the favored Bears. Who kn...

Barbara Bruno: NFL Game Picks: Predicting Every Week 8 Contest
Huffington Post Sports - over 5 years
From the young guns on Thursday to the masters of quarterbacking on Sunday night, from Arrowhead to Lambeau to London -- Week 8 of the NFL season guarantees a few upsets fueled by desperation, injuries or misplaced complacence. Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Minnesota Vikings. Tampa Bay showed fortitude in their game last Sunday as Josh Freeman passed for 420 yards! Okay, it was against the Saints. The third-year QB and WR Vincent Jackson have begun to click and the wideout came down with 216 yards and a score. The Bucs have scored almost 30 points per contest in their last three weeks. Usually when you put up 513 yards of offense and hold opposing rushers to 81 yards, you win. As for the Bucs D, Ronde Barber intercepted Drew Brees early -- and then the record-setter scored four times. What can you do? Arizona Cardinals Have Done the Most to Close the Gap on San Francisco 49ers
Bleacher Report - almost 6 years
The Arizona Cardinals have enjoyed a productive offseason and have done more than any other NFC West team to close the gap on the San Francisco 49ers. The Cardinals have made a series of solid moves in both free agency and the draft, and could surprise the NFC runners-up. The biggest reason for optimism amongst Cardinals fans should be a burgeoning defense, developing well under the stewardship of coordinator Ray Horton. After several attempts at trying to find a coordinator who could replicate the Pittsburgh Steelers' model for defense, Ken Whisenhunt has finally found the right man. Horton's group came on strong towards the end of the 2011 campaign. The emergence of Sam Acho has at last given the Cardinals a consistent pass-rush threat from the outside. The team has continued to stockpile ex-Steelers veterans equipped with vital scheme knowledge, in the form of defensive end Nick Eason and nickle back William Gay. The unit has been further boosted by the news that Calais Campbell...
