Why On-Screen Representation Actually Matters
Huffington Post - 12 months
The conversation about diversity in Hollywood often centers on fairness. It’s unfair that just over a quarter of speaking roles went to people of color in 2015’s top movies ― that Asians and Latinx nabbed tiny slivers. It’s unfair that women made up less than one-third of protagonists in top movies in 2016. It’s unfair that black, Asian and Latinx actors were completely left out of acting categories in the Academy Awards last year, and the year before that. It is unfair. Although the Academy announced a small list of Oscar nominees featuring more black actors in 2017, for years, researchers have counted and recounted the vast population of bodies making up content in TV and film, only to find, again and again, that the industry’s struggle to represent people of color, women and other groups the way we see them in real life ― as people with likes and dislikes, habits and whims, hopes and fears ― is endemic. But it’s not just unfair. Even if we don’t stop to think much about the...

Penguin cancans and endless bananas: the life of a panto dancer
Guardian (UK) - about 2 years
Billy Warren, currently appearing with Duncan James and Joe Pasquale in Aladdin at Southampton’s Mayflower theatre, tells us what it’s like doing two challenging performances every day We do two performances of Aladdin almost every day, and the dancers are on stage for most of the show. We play several roles, including the minions of the villain, Abanazar, and also do a lot of fun things, like a penguin cancan across the stage. The show opens with Uptown Funk, and then it’s West End-style dancing – jazz and ballet technique, which is my kind of style. It’s not just simple box steps – Melanie Brown, the choreographer, has given us a lot of partner work, with lifting for the men, and some fantastic, challenging routines. Continue reading...

How The Spice Girls Got Their Iconic Names
Popeater - over 4 years
Posh, Baby, Scary, Sporty and Ginger. There is only one group of girls that come to mind when you hear those names: The Spice Girls. (Were you expecting The Beatles?) In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, Melanie Brown, also known as Scary Spice, talked about how the girls' names were chosen. It was actually a teeny bopper magazine called Top of the Pops who gave us our names. We were already established as the Spice Girls, but they wrote a story about us and within it they called us each something different. The names stuck, so we went with it! In an previous interview, Tops Of Pops editor Peter Loraine said he talked about giving the girls nicknames over lunch in 1996. “I simply said it would be a good idea if they had some nicknames. The girls liked the idea, so I had an editorial meeting back at the office and about four of us started thinking of names. Posh was the first one to be thought up because Victoria looks pretty sophisticated. The rest were pretty ea...

Scary Spice Teaches Us Some Valuable Fashion Lessons
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Melanie Brown, aka Scary Spice, rose to fame as the outspoken member of the British girl band, the Spice Girls. As a fixture on the '90s music scene, Mel B's pipes got her noticed, but it was her daring satorial sense that really made a mark. Let's face it, Mel B and leopard print go together like milk and Oreos. Following the breakup of the band, she went on to have a solo career and act as a judge on various reality television shows. Though she has stayed in the public eye over the past few decades, Melanie will forever be known as the gal with the cone-shaped cat ears (to us at least). As if the Spice Girls didn't already teach us enough (who really knew how to "Zig-A-Zag-Ah" before they came along), we are now turning to our favorite member, Scary Spice, for some important fashion lessons. In celebration of her 38th birthday (on May 29), here's what Scary can teach us: 1. Zebra print can make anyone smile. 2. If you're not in metallic pants, you're doing ...

WOW: 'Get To The Back Of The Bus, Rosa Parks'
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
LOS ANGELES -- A chef who claims she was insulted and called anti-gay and racist slurs while working at Cleo Restaurant, a Hollywood eatery popular with celebrities, is now suing over the alleged discrimination. When Keyon Wilson joined Cleo as a line cook Sept. 21 2012, she was the only African-American person in the kitchen. Her discrimination and harassment lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that immediately after Wilson started working, colleagues and supervising chefs hurled insults and slurs at her. (This article contains language from Wilson's lawsuit that some readers may find offensive.) Some insults were more generic, like "fat ass" and "bitch," according to the complaint. But Wilson, who is gay, alleges colleagues also asked her whether "gay guys suck good dick," and told her to "get to the back of the bus, Rosa Parks." She also claims that kitchen workers received instructions like this one: "When you walk down the line, put your di...
