7 Newly Popular Baby Names That Have Been Hiding In Plain Sight
Huffington Post - about 4 years
By Linda Rosenkrantz for Nameberry It always strikes me as somewhat curious when a name that has been hidden in plain sight for decades -- or longer -- attached to a significant literary or real life character will suddenly pop into the zeitgeist and take off. Sometimes the contributing factors are obvious -- sharing with a more recent celebrity (looking at you, Ms Johansson) or its discovery by the parents of a "starbaby." And sometimes, it just remains a mystery. Here are some prominent examples. Atticus The Harper Lee novel To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, and the movie, starring Gregory Peck as principled lawyer and role-model dad Atticus Finch, was released two years later. Between then and now, the book has been a mainstay of English class curricula, working its way into the collective consciousness of future baby namers, while Atticus Finch was voted the greatest hero of American film by the AFI. But why Atticus now? There were five baby boys bearing th...

Karen Fragala Smith: The Scent of Blue Jasmine Wafts Over the MoMA
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Serious actors, a few old-school comedians who've reinvented themselves, young beauties and some not-so-young beauties braved the rain and humidity to celebrate the New York premiere of Woody Allen's film, Blue Jasmine. The film stars Cate Blanchett, whose luminous complexion was complemented by an ice pink Balenciaga gown with appliqué flowers. Alec Baldwin proudly showed off his wife, Hilaria's baby bump. Tammy Blanchard was effervescent in a white frock with shimmering sequins contrasted by her new, glossy black coif. Louis C.K. skulked across the red carpet as if he was afraid he would be removed by security, and Andrew Dice Clay, who reached superstardom in the early '90s, followed by a series of failed sitcoms and loads of inconsequential radio spots over the last two decades, needed his own security team to protect him from the throngs of memorabilia-armed fans on the sidewalk. Certain notable names, who were less about being seen, and more a...

Anne Margaret Daniel: What Did F. Scott Fitzgerald Think of The Great Gatsby, the Movie, in 1926? He Walked Out
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
What did F. Scott Fitzgerald think of the first movie of version of The Great Gatsby? Not much. He didn't stay in the theater to see the end of the only version of the novel made during his lifetime. Hollywood, January 1927: Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald were in Los Angeles for the first time. He was excited to be setting to work on an original screenplay for Lipstick, a collegiate fantasy for the actress Constance Talmadge. As soon as there were movies and stars to admire, Fitzgerald's longtime love of the stage had translated quickly to screen -- and, after his last attempt at a play, The Vegetable, had failed so miserably in 1923, perhaps a screenplay would be just the modern thing to redeem his beloved writing of dialogue. Zelda came with him, but they paused on the way to drop their daughter Scottie, who had turned 6 that past autumn, with Zelda's parents in Montgomery, Ala. Scott figured his screenplay would take only a few weeks to write, but he and Zelda stay...

Maggie Van Ostrand: Best Pictures That Never Won Best Picture Oscar
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
Oscar will be allowed out of his Chicago vault for the annual trip to Hollywood on February 24th. He'll be 85 years old this year and we'd like to know who his plastic surgeon is. You can't tell us he hasn't had a butt lift. Speaking of butts, actors as well as backless, frontless, mindless media-created celebs will wave to fans and stop for fashion interviews, looking over their shoulders and pointing their backs and butts directly at us while secretly trying to figure out why actresses wanted to be called actors and now they're stuck with female actors. Everyone's making book on who'll return their borrowed dresses and tuxes to the designers and the jewels to Harry Winston's. The track record for the return of borrowed clothing is dismal. Every time a star tells the media whose dress she's wearing, it's Hollywoodspeak for, "Try and get it back." We can hope our favorite movie will come away with the big prize, but in the long run, some of the best pictures ever ma...
