Deadlocked: Being Female In America
Huffington Post - 8 months
I don’t know what it’s like to be black. I don’t know what it’s like to be gay. I don’t know what it’s like to be Muslim, Mexican, African, or Jewish. To be terrorized, tyrannized, marginalized, or oppressed. I don’t know what it’s like to be shot in my car, hung from a tree, bombed in my bed, or whipped in the town square. I don’t know the hardship of backbreaking labor that affords little but poverty while being denigrated for my immigration status. I don’t know the anguish of putting my child in a rickety boat to sail a treacherous sea to be turned away by those terrified of our ethnicity. I don’t know what it’s like to be judged harshly for my skin color, the shape of my eyes, the letters in my name, the gender of my lover, or the religion I believe. What I do know? I know what it’s like to be a woman. Specifically, a woman in America. While the assignation may not typically engender tragedies like the above, it does come with its own list of degradati...

Huffington Post - 9 months
Rosario Dawson’s cousin died last week after being found unresponsive by the actress in her Los Angeles home. Dawson returned to her Venice Beach apartment on Thursday to find Vaneza Ines Vasquez unconscious downstairs and immediately called the paramedics, who attempted to resuscitate her, TMZ reports. An early autopsy report indicates that her death was due to natural causes, according to TMZ, but a toxicology report has yet to be released.  Dawson has yet to make a public statement, but Vasquez’s mother, Lisa Centeno, shared a touching memorial to her daughter on Facebook Monday.  “Vaneza, my sweet, sweet beautiful baby — your passing has left me destroyed forever but I know you are at peace in Paradise,” she wrote alongside a photo of her family ...

There Are No Words To Describe How Good Viola Davis Looked Last Night
Huffington Post - about 1 year
We’d love to tell you all about how absolutely stunning our national treasure Viola Davis looked at the 8th Annual Oscars Sistahs Soiree in Beverly Hills Wednesday night. Unfortunately, we can’t. Because there are no words that could do her and her dress justice. We could say the perfectly form-fitting, plunging black dress looked great on her figure, and that still wouldn’t sum it up. We could explain how the edgy cut-outs are a welcome departure from Davis’ typically classic style, and bask in how good she looks from every angle. Yet, that still wouldn’t be enough to express our many feelings. We might even try to capture through written word how beautiful some of the other attendees ― including Octavia Spencer, Ruth Negga, Rosario Dawson and Tracee Ellis Ross ― looked in fringe, bold patterns and sheer outfits.   Unfortunately, we’re too busy trying to emulate their magic to do it. So, in lieu of all that, here are a few more photos to swoon over. You’r...

Best new artist: Some celebrities wrote their first checks to candidates in 2016
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Alec Baldwin (right) won a Golden Globe in 2007 for his work on "30 Rock" and posed with Donald Trump, actress Tina Fey and Melania Trump. Nine years later Baldwin played Trump on Saturday Night Live -- but he contributed to no presidential candidates. (AP Photo/Matt Sayles) BY: Andrew Mayersohn The Hollywood liberal has been a stock figure in American politics for decades. Conservative politicians have long denounced or mocked the alleged political influence of musicians, TV stars, and Golden Globe recipients. While the entertainment industry does indeed lean well to the left, though, most of that money comes from producers and media magnates, not the people you see on screen. The only household names in the entertainment industry to make our list of top 100 donors in 2016 were Jeffrey Katzenberg of Dreamworks and the conservative McMahons of the WWE (and, now, the Small Business Administration). In terms of the "talent," though, the same handful of politically aware cele...

'Luke Cage' Is 'Kick Ass, Wu-Tang Blackness With A Marvel Twist'
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Marvel’s latest Netflix series, “Luke Cage,” can only be described as “unadulterated, bulletproof, kick ass, Wu-Tang blackness, with a Marvel twist,” says the show’s creator Cheo Hodari Coker.  Adapted from the 1970s Marvel comic book character of the same name, the Netflix action-drama series ― which stars Mike Colter, Mahershala Ali, Simone Missick, Rosario Dawson and Alfre Woodard ― is set in Harlem, New York. It tells the story of a wrongly convicted man, Luke Cage (played by Colter), who escapes prison after gaining super strength through an experiment before becoming a hero for hire. Similar to other revised Marvel adapted television shows, “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones,” Coker ― who is known for his work on “Notorious,” “Ray Donovan,” and “Southland”― said it was imperative for him to take a modern-day approach to the story by incorporating current social themes, while maintaining entertaining elements from the original comic.    ”We were able to do a hip-hop, Blaxp...
