Tim Cummings' Passage to The Normal Heart
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Those who detect a thaw in the cold war between the New York and Los Angeles theatre worlds must be smoking something: just because Larry Kramer's Normal Heart has returned to Los Angeles after 16 years does not mean that the Coasts are viewing each other with any less suspicion. The tiny but much-lauded Fountain Theatre in L.A. is hosting, and New York-born and -bred Tim Cummings tackles the explosive lead character, Ned Weeks -- a thinly disguised fictional incarnation of the activist playwright, whose outrage fueled the emergence of the gay rights movement. I caught up with Cummings in between rehearsals at the Fountain and, although he belongs to that rare breed of actor who convincingly plays heroes and villains, sad-sacks and kings, romantic leads and slow-witted fishmongers, he exuded apprehension and awe at the immensity of this role. Earlier this year, Cummings stormed the stage at Disney Hall in the role of larger-than-life Ballets Russes genius Serge Diaghilev, backed ...

Pat Gallagher: 'Dukes Of Hazzard' Star Discusses Family Tragedy
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Catherine Bach had the perfect life. And then, the unthinkable happened. On April 30, 2010, her beloved husband of 20 years, entertainment lawyer Peter Lopez, committed suicide, and life, as she knew it, changed forever. Bach, who played the sexy, sassy Daisy Duke on the CBS action adventure TV show The Dukes of Hazzard from 1979 to 1885, spends her time these days portraying Chelsea's mother, Anita Lawson, on The Young and the Restless as well as overseeing her Catherine Bach Signature Line of jewelry and participating in Dukes Fan Fairs where she signs autographs for thousands of fans with fellow castmates John Schneider, Tom Wopat, Rick Hurst, Sonny Shroyer, James Best and Ben Jones -- and, most importantly, she takes great care of her precious teenage daughters, Laura and Sophia. Bach has not spoken of her husband's suicide in depth until now. She graciously sat down with The Huffington Post to talk about the heart-breaking circumstances that took place before and ...

David Finkle: Easy Listener: Tom Wopat, Kevin Dozier, John Lloyd Young Are Singers You Need to Know
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Hey music lovers, let's consider--for want of a better term--pop crooners. At the moment, the greater listening public seems to think there are only two worth knowing. They probably don't even need to be named. Nevertheless, they will be: Michael Bublé and Josh Groban. Of them, just keep in mind that the former seems deliberately to have staked out post-Frank Sinatra territory for good or bad and the latter has pledged himself to a characterless emotionality that eventually makes everything he sings sound like everything else he's just sung. For that reason, it might be helpful for fans of popular singing to know about CDs--or downloads where available--from three men who bring much more to their work, who infuse their singing with personality, strength, subtlety, a notable good taste for material and a devotion to the texts and subtexts of the lyrics they sing. More than that, they each work with superb producers, musicians and arrangers, in many instances the best ...

Cicely Tyson Delivers In 'The Trip to Bountiful'
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
NEW YORK -- Move over, you adorable scamps in "Annie." Settle down, weird girls in "Matilda." Broadway has a new unlikely heroine, a frail widow who hums hymns and has a bad heart. A first-rate revival of Horton Foote's "The Trip to Bountiful" opened Tuesday at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre determined to demonstrate that insight isn't the sole domain of the young. A sublime Cicely Tyson returns to Broadway for the first time in 30 years to play Carrie Watts, the widow who shares a cramped two-room apartment in Houston in 1953 with her devoted son and overbearing daughter-in-law. Watts is always looking back, while her son and his wife look forward. Watts' only desire is to revisit her old home in Bountiful and recapture the vitality and purpose she seemed to lose when she left for the big city decades ago. "I've turned into a hateful, quarrelsome old woman. And before I leave this earth, I'd like to recover some of the dignity," she says. "The peace I used t...

Mike Ragogna: Money Jungle & I've Got Your Number: Conversations with Terri Lyne Carrington and Tom Wopat
Huffington Post - about 5 years
Terri Lyne Carrington interview Mike Ragogna: Terri, Money Jungle: Provocative In Blue is a bit of a concept album for you. What gave you this concept to do? Terri Lyne Carrington: About ten years ago, I heard the original Money Jungle for the first time, and I don't know how it had slipped passed me over the years. It just caught my attention. There was something in there that was compelling me to want to revisit some of the material, and I sort of felt that right away when I was listening. I thought about it for several years before I really decided to do it. I decided to do it about four or five years ago, but didn't get around to it until now--I had other things that I really wanted to do as well, like The Mosaic Project. Still to this day, I'm not one hundred percent sure what it was that spoke to me on the original recording other than the energy that kind of popped off that CD. I listened to it on the re-mastered version. Duke himself sort of took a step back ...

'The Bourne Legacy': What Happens After The Title Character Is Ditched?
Moviefone Blog - over 5 years
A bit lost in the fact that Matt Damon does not appear in the latest Jason Bourne movie, The Bourne Legacy, is that Jason Bourne does not appear in The Bourne Legacy. On the surface, this may seem like the same thing. But Damon's non-inclusion has been such a big story Bourne's non-appearance has been somewhat lost. This is actually quite remarkable: For crying out loud, the character's name is in the title of the movie. Could you imagine a Harry Potter movie in which Harry Potter does not appear? Now, this has been attempted a handful of times in the past, but the results haven't been particularly stellar. In fact, it could be considered the Kobayashi Maru of character scenarios. Actually, two examples in particular stand out: Smokey and the Bandit Part 3 and The Dukes of Hazzard. (Yes, Valerie sort of qualifies. Valerie Harper was famously written out of her self-titled show -- her character was actually killed -- and the show was, briefly, renamed Valerie's Family. But then it ...
